Today in Gear: A Tribute to Oris’s First Wristwatch, Apple’s iMac Pro and More
New & Noteworthy Releases
Oris Big Crown 1917 Limited Edition
The Big Crown 1917 is a newly-made tribute to Oris’s first aviation watch, and as you’d expect it’s practically ripped straight from the brand’s archives. Essentially a pocket watch with lugs and a leather strapped attached, it looks decidedly old school thanks to details like a 40mm stainless steel case, a dial with vintage-looking Arabic numerals and “cathedral hands.” Internally though it houses a modern automatic movement. Like the original, however, this new incarnation has the same button at two o’clock that unlocks the crown when setting the time. There’s little else like it on the watch market today, and that’s what we love about it.
Apple iMac Pro
Announced back in June, the iMac Pro was touted as Apple’s most powerful computer ever. And after what seems like an age, you can finally order one today. As a recap, the iMac Pro has an 8-Core Xeon processor (which is upgradeable to 18 cores), a 5K display and super fancy AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPU card that’ll, according to Apple, produce “the most advanced graphics ever in a Mac.” For most people, the iMac Pro will be overkill, not to mention out of their price range. But if you’re a creative who knows exactly how to use this supremely powerful all-in-one machine, the iMac Pro starts at $5K. — Tucker Bowe
Backwash Magazine Issue 3
Surfing may seem like a fair-weather sport, but there are many diehards chasing waves in locales that aren’t all turquoise waters and white sand beaches. Backwash’s latest 160-page book focuses on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea that beat against the shores of the United Kingdom, and the hearty souls who ride them. — Tanner Bowden
Wolverine Lodge Moc Slipper
Handcrafted in Maine with premium Horween leather, the Lodge Moc slipper is the first-ever slipper in Wolverine’s ‘1000 Mile’ collection, essentially their finest and most long-lasting product line. Much like Wolverine’s classic 1000 Mile boots, the Lodge Moc Slipper will resist decades of wear and tear, while a Shearling-lined interior provides cozy warmth. — Michael Finn
Manduka eQua Yoga Mat
No activity is immune to a proliferation of specialized gear, not even yoga, despite its inherent focus on simplicity. Manduka’s latest yoga mat, the eQua, combines mat and towel into one in an attempt to pare down the amount of stuff required for your practice. Manduka constructs the mat’s base with the sustainably-sourced tree rubber it’s known for but uses a microfiber towel top that’s extra grippy when slightly wet from perspiration. That non-rubber top also comes in three stylish, artist-inspired prints. — Tanner Bowden

Save an Astounding $800 on This Mechanical Pilot’s Watch
Luminox’s P-38 Lighting is a part of the brand’s aviation-inspired lineup and is fitted with a dial meant to look like it was ripped straight from the cockpit of Lockheed’s funky, two-tailed fighter. As a part of its military-inspired look, it comes with a hulking 44mm case; this might be a non-starter for some guys, but if you have a predilection for big, tough-guy watches it’s an excellent choice in wristwear. Similarly, the watch comes adorned with stylish and legible Arabic numerals as well as sharp tritium gas lume and a chunky rotating bezel sitting atop the square case.
This iteration of the P-38 Lighting, in particular, comes packing a Swiss-made automatic movement which contributes to its fairly-high $1,400 MSRP, but right now you can get a massive $800 markdown at Huckberry.

In addition to its pre-set functions, its “ULTRA” function allows users to granularly adjust temperature, cooking time and pressurization, adding to its utility (and even turning it into a sous vide circulator).
