Meet the G-Shock Rangeman GPR-B1000
The New G-Shock Rangeman Has a Built-In Solar Panel to Charge Its GPS
Casio’s G-Shock series has long been revered to include some of the toughest watches you can buy. At CES 2018, Casio revealed its latest addition to the storied lineup, the new G-Shock Rangeman GPR-B1000, which is a part of G-Shock’s Master of G collection. The collection is also known as the “Professional Series,” combining G-Shock’s rugged features (shock resistance, 200-meter water resistance) with the latest survival technologies (atmospheric pressure/altitude and temperature sensors, Triple Sensor to measure compass bearing, GPS).
The Rangeman GPR-B1000 is the first G-Shock to have a built-in solar panel to charge its GPS. The watch’s GPS can work for approximately 33 hours on a single charge, but if the battery dies, four hours of direct sunlight will revive the watch’s GPS for an hour. It’s not a lot, and won’t charge the GPS very fast, but it could make a big difference in a survival situation. The solar panel can also be used to power the watch’s other digital functions — it will keep the time display powered at all times.
The Rangeman GPR-B1000 also the first G-Shock to support wireless charging. Five hours on its wireless charging plate will get the watch back to full strength. At the time of writing, it’s unknown if the watch can be charged on wireless chargers that aren’t its own. The watch has a 2.0mm ceramic case back, which helps enable wireless charging.
The Rangeman GPR-B1000 will be available for purchase this 2018, costing $800.
