This Chronograph Pays Tribute to a Mythical Sports Watch
Chronographs have a long history of keeping accurate time for auto racing while also being able to help pilots keep a record of elapsed time along a chosen course. And TAG Heuer’s Autavia chronograph played a hand in this when it was born in the 1960s — “AUT” comes from “auto” and “AVIA” comes from “aviation.”
The 1972 Special Re-Edition Autavia is an automatic chronograph that pays homage to the 1972 Heuer Autavia 1163V Viceroy. It’s designed with contemporary elements like a 42mm polished steel case, a sapphire case back, a two-register dial layout and a date window at 6 o’clock while still featuring the black dial, red accents and red chronograph hands of the original. Distinctly an Autavia yet originally modern, the 1972 Special Re-Edition Autavia is a superb branch of the Autavia family tree.
