Galpin’s Ford Ranger X Will Make You Forget About the Ranger Raptor

Ford brought the midsize Ranger back to the U.S. for 2019, but declined to also bring over the full-bore Ranger Raptor available in other markets. A U.S. introduction for that latter truck remains years away, if it happens at all—but impatient Blue Oval fans wanting that aggressive Raptor style don’t need to wait that long. Los Angeles-based Galpin Auto Sports—yes, of Pimp My Ride fame—is offering a Ford Ranger X conversion package that turns the compact pickup into a semi-Raptor for a starting price of $13,950.

The Ranger X conversion package preps the Ranger for serious off-roading, adding a body lift, an upgraded suspension, off-road tires, and custom 17-inch wheels. It also upgrades the exterior with Ford fender flares, Addictive Desert Designs front and rear bumpers, a Ranger Raptor front grille, a Rigid Industries light bar, and, of course, custom vinyl graphics. Crucially, Galpin says these enhancements can be added without violating the manufacturer warranty.

Buyers can purchase a new Ford Ranger for the project direct from Galpin, or bring their stock Ranger in for modification. The $13,950 price is for the base Ranger X package, but Galpin is happy to do interior or stereo upgrades as well. Total price for a Ranger X should range from the low $40,000s to low $50,000s, depending on which Ranger trim buyers start out with. (The full-size F-150 Raptor, it should be noted, has a base MSRP of $52,855.)

The only place the Ranger X falls well and truly short of the Ranger Raptor is the engine. All Rangers here use Ford’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, which generates a respectable 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. The Ranger Raptor sold abroad uses a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-four making 210 hp and 370 lb-ft; given Americans aren’t too keen on diesels, any US-bound one would be more likely to use Ford’s 2.7-liter V-6 that makes 335 hp and 380 lb-ft in the Edge ST, letting it slot between the base Ranger and the burly F-150 Raptor.
