A Veteran Automotive Designer Has Produced a Stealthy New Automatic Watch

May 14, 2019 Watches By

The Matt Humphries Design SA2 is a distinctive automatic watch with clear automotive inspiration. A 41mm mechanical timepiece powered by the Miyota 9039 with 5 ATM of water resistance, the SA2 features a complex stainless steel case design consisting of a bezel, mid-case, case back and exoskeleton frame. DLC-coated edges, knurling and satin and polished surfaces add up to a sophisticated design seldom seem at this price point.

The face of the SA2 is handsome and sparse, featuring a black DLC chapter ring with yellow markers and a machine-turned black sunray main dial with laser-cut markers laid over a Super LumiNova-coated dial for extra visibility. The watch’s hands are also coated in SLN.

The SA2 features fixed spring bars and a 22mm lug width, so your strap choices are limited to single-pass and NATOs, but this still leaves plenty of options. Two seat belt-style NATOs are supplied with the watch, one in grey, and the other in black with a yellow racing stripe.

The MHD SA2 is limited to 100 units, with a 10% pre-order price of around $749. Free worldwide delivery will begin in July 2019, after which regular pricing of roughly $833 will resume.
