Outfitting your home or apartment with smart lights lets you control your lighting from anywhere with just your phone and tweak the color temperature of your home at will — but it all falls apart if somebody flips a wall switch and turns a connected light off the old-fashioned way. The Aurora smart bulb dimmer ($40) cleverly solves that problem. It has a completely wireless design and it doesn’t require you to remove your existing light switch; just slap the Aurora on top, and it will lock the switch in the upright position.

After installation, you can control your smart lights by hand like a traditional dimmer, or remotely as you would any other Philips Hue compatible device. And because the Aurora dimmer uses the Zigbee smart home standard, like other Philips Hue products, it doesn’t require access to your Wi-Fi to function. (You can control your home’s lighting from anywhere.) It may not be the flashiest piece of smart home tech, but it certainly seems like it could save you a lot of trouble.
