In this episode of This Week In Gear: Steve Mazzucchi, Meg Lappe, Tanner Bowden and Nick Caruso highlight loads of new products from the floor of the Outdoor Retailer show in Denver, Colorado.
Oru Kayak (Currently Unnamed)
This newest kayak from Oru will come out in 2020. Designed with origami in mind, the boat is made of the same type of corrugated plastice the U.S. Postal Service uses to fashion those indestructible mail bins you see everywhere. It packs down in under three minutes into a smaller package than any other product from Oru to date – small enough you can check the kayak when you travel by air – and it only weighs 20 pounds. Oru plans to offer their new boat for under $1,000.
Taxa Outdoors Cricket
This rugged camper was designed by the man in charge of living habitat design for the International Space Station. It’s small and lightweight enough to tow behind a small vehicle, and can be kitted out with amazing gear right from the factory. Sleeps two adults and two kids and features laser-cut panels. Fully loaded, the Cricket will run almost $29,000.
Primus Firestick Canister Stove
When it’s available next spring, the Firestick will come in steel ($90) and titanium ($120). It’s only four inches long and weighs only four ounces yet generates 8,530 BTUs.

Hibear All-Day Adventure Flask
Hibear’s new insulated bottle features an easy-to-clean design with integrated cocktail and coldbrew/pour-over coffee making tools, plus a silicone mug so you can share your swill on the trail.

She teamed up with Costa to support their Untangle Collection, which is made from upcycled used fishing nets. Kimi talked with us about the brand’s mission and the perilous state of our oceans, discussing how we as gear enthusiasts and consumers can do our part to keep them as healthy as possible.
Vasque Clarion 88 GTX
Vasque reached way back into its 1988 catalog and reissued one of those original designs. The Clarion 88 GTX comes in two colorways for men, and though it is a throwback boot with a lifestyle look, it’s built to be a true hiker that can tackle any trail. It’ll be available in August exckusively via Vasque.com.
3 of Our Favorite Knives at OR
Among the hundreds of knives at OR this year, these are some of our favorites. Like its siblings released earlier this year, the Leatherman Free T4, available June 24, features magnetic mechanisms for one-hand opening and closing. The handmade Helle Kletten, available this fall, with its 2.1-inch blade and birch handle, is the Norwegian brand’s third-ever folding knife and also its smallest. Benchmade’s 380 Aller, available now, features a 1.6-inch blade and weighs less than two ounces; with the integrated prybar/screwdriver, bottle opener and money clip, it’s more of a multitool than a knife.
• Leatherman Free T4 ($60)
• Hell Kletten ($199)
• Benchmade 380 Aller ($160)
Rivian is making huge waves in the automotive industry and even bolder moves in the off-road community. The R1T truck features a 400-mile range and tons of adventure-ready options. From the factory, buyers can opt for bed-rail-mounted tents, integrated kitchen setups, full underbody skidplates and more. Plus, the trucks electric motors negate the need for differentials and a hydraulic system does away with the need for sway bars. Instead, the R1T is a torque-on-demand overlander that will bring the outdoors to anyone. It will be available at the end of 2020 for a base price of $69,000.
Big Agnes Scout Platinum 1P
Big Agnes has revealed a 13-ounce, one-person tent –º the lightest they’ve ever made. The Scout Platinum 1P features single-layer, waterproof materials that prop up with hiking poles. That means more room in the tent and far less weight in your pack. Available next year, the tent will retail for $450.
Eddie Bauer Mountain Ops Down Jacket
Eddie Bauer’s new down jacket is made for outdoor work. Available this fall for $399, the jacket design was informed by input from mountain guiudes, so it’s ready to tackle the cold with no nonsense.
Yeti Dog Bed
Yeti, maker of much of our favorite indestructible coolers and other gear, has revealed its new aptly named Dog Bed. The two-piece bed features washable covers and waterproof components. The Dog Bed will be available this fall for $300.
