This Awesome Bicycle Helmet Can Save You $45 — and Your Life

For those in the know in the helmet world, MIPS is a pretty big deal. Short for “multi-directional impact protection system,” the label applies to helmets featuring a plastic liner that acts as a slip plane to redistribute the sort of rolling impacts that characterize many bike accidents. The next evolution is MIPS Spherical, where two layers of foam on the outside of the helmet mimic the sliding effect without the sacrifices in fit and ventilation that traditional MIPS brings.

All of which is to say, MIPS Spherical is pretty cutting-edge protective stuff, usually only available at a premium, such as the $370 cost of a Giro Aether MIPS Helmet. The favorite of a number of Tour de France riders, the helmet also boasts a laser-cut shell seamlessly fused to the EPS foam, Roc Loc 5 Plus easy adjustability and 11 deep vents for optimal ventilation. Right now it’s on sale for $325 (in the low-key coolest Olive/Citron colorway) at Competitive Cyclist. Talk about a safe bet.
