Professorial Drip

Albert Einstein’s Original Leather Jacket Now Comes in Black

December 4, 2019 Style By

Noted for his Theory of Relativity and wispy white hair, Albert Einstein is also looked to for what I’ll call professorial drip. Though he can be seen suited up in tweed (waistcoat included), his Menlo Cossack leather jacket, made by Levi’s is almost as legendary as the man himself. Now you can have an exact replica.

Levi’s bought his original jacket at a Christie’s auction in 2016 and meticulously reproduced it down to every minute detail for its heritage sub-label, Levi’s Vintage Clothing. Everything is there from the lambskin leather to the tags and even Einstein’s signature scent. In collaboration with Brooklyn perfumer D.S. & Durga, the jacket also comes with a custom fragrance meant to conjure notes of pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscripts and vintage leather. The only thing different about it is that this version is all blacked out. True theoretical physics fans and Einstein Stans will have to scour resell sites and eBay for the first replica which came in the original mid-brown color.

The rare reproduction is limited to just 500 pieces and comes in a commemorative box with a replica of the No. 97 auction paddle used at auction.
