Koenigsegg Now Makes the World’s Craziest Family Car

In case you’ve been living under a rock or solely reading Consumer Reports for the last 20 years, Koenigsegg is a Swedish manufacturer known for producing rare, expensive performance cars so patently nuts they defy even the boundaries of terms like supercar and hypercar. Today, however, marks a new era for the carmaker: the company is branching out into four-seater family vehicles with the Gemera, described  by Koenigsegg as the “world’s first Mega GT.”

Don’t let the GT label fool you: the Gemera is still very much a Koenigsegg. The tri-motor electric piece of the powertrain puts out 1,115 horsepower — more than a Formula 1 car — and can deliver an all-electric top speed of 186 mph on its own, or go 31 miles on battery alone. That system is joined by a twin-turbo 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 608 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. Combined, the Gemera’s powertrain produces a staggering 1,723 hp and 2,581 lb-ft.

The car will accelerate to 62 mph in 1.9 seconds, according to Koenigsegg — 0.7 seconds faster than the manufacturer-claimed time for the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. It will also hit 250 mph, if you ever get a free run at Monza to try it out.

The Gemera is also a legit four-seater family car. It has front and rear heated seats,  as well as heated and cooled cupholders, three-zone climate control and front and rear infotainment screens. The design negates the need for a B-pillar while still retaining one of our favorite car features: Koenigsegg’s dihedral doors, which open vertically, and remove part of the roof to allow easy access to both seating areas. Koenigsegg also says the two luggage compartments will hold up to four carry-on bags.

Koenigsegg will produce a limited run of just 300 Gemeras. Expect the price tag to exceed $1,000,000 by a comfortable margin.
