A Red Dot Design Award is more than a status symbol. The distinction recognizes expertly designed products that contribute to a more beautiful and functional world. Since 1955, brands have submitted tens of thousands of entries to be considered for an award. The jury, comprised of experts in product design, communication design and design concepts, award products in a range of categories from cars to tech gadgets. Check out six home and design winners — from a high chair to a sound-absorbing tower — from this year’s Red Dot Design Awards.
Thonet N.200 Lounge Chair
Thonet’s famous bentwood furniture is not new. In fact, it’s close to 200 years old. The first furniture-making Thonet discovered he could bend certain woods that were soaked with enough moisture (he used steam) and create uniform, unnatural shapes out of a natural material. The N.200 is a modern, lounge chair take on one of furniture design’s most iconic creations.
Stokke Clikk High Chair
In what is a very Norwegian move, Norwegian brand Stokke made design-conscious, functional high chairs. Its legs spread wider than usual, making it difficult to topple over, and it can be assembled with no tools at all. There are no nooks or crannies for food bits to get stuck in or milk to dry out in, either. The removable tray can even be dishwashed.
Baltensweiler Irio Floor Lamp
The multi-light floor lamp is a common sight. A multi-light floor lamp whose lights attach to and derive power from the foundation via magnets is less common. Slide the Irio lamp’s bulbs up and down as you please.
Mi Baseboard Heater
This smart space heater is an intuitive and effective way to keep your rooms warm while maintaining proper air moisture. Cold air enters the bottom of the device and hot air emits from the top — the result is a convection effect that minimizes dust flow. The heater maintains indoor humidity by lowering water evaporation so your skin and throat don’t dry out.
Okamura Marca Chair
The Marcha office chair is as sleek as it is functional. The chair takes design cues from a folding chair, with the ergonomics of a high-end office chair. Its sleek, elegant lines are in stark contrast to chairs that place function over form.
The Silentum represents beautiful silence. This obscure, free-standing tower absorbs noise through its 18 vertical Jasper panels. Placed in the corners of a room, the Silentum blocks sound waves from traveling along the walls. As the jury proclaimed: “It enriches workplace ambiences in a wide variety of layouts and arrangements.” With everyone working from home right now, the Silentum is a godsend for those forced to work in a noisy apartment complex.
