It’s OK to be stressed out about the impact even the slightest change in our climate could have on everyday life; research suggests rising water levels could reach high enough to overtake some seaside cities; another suggests a third of all plant and animal species could be extinct — because of habitat or temperature change — by 2050. Hell, we could be next. (But definitely still in the distant future: According to acclaimed climatologist Michael E. Mann — who might’ve been the inspiration for Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Don’t Look Up — “there is no evidence of climate change scenarios that would render human beings extinct,” he told LiveScience.)

However, climate change could make a more immediate impact on our skin. Human habits and material manufacturing contribute to the thinning of the ozone, which will increase the amount of UV rays that reach the surface, causing a spike in skin cancer cases, but also a domino effect of other issues.

A Connected Crisis: Climate Change and Skincare

“A 2 degree Celsius (3.6 degree Fahrenheit) increase in ambient temperature is estimated to increase skin cancer incidence 11 percent globally by 2050,” Dr. Liia Ramachandra, a skincare expert, industry executive and researcher, says, citing a 2002 study from Jan C van der Leun and Frank R de Gruijl. “Heat also has an indirect effect on skin cancer incidence by altering human behavior.”

“Climate change is real and it is happening.”

11 percent is a huge spike, and that estimate was made some 20 years ago, when forecasts, to put it kindly, were more conservative and a little more hopeful humans could change their ways. Whether we can right our wrongs on a large enough scale to undo what many deem inevitable remains to be seen. But climate change itself is not up for debate. NASA has proven it’s real.

“Earth’s climate has changed throughout history,” a recent NASA report begins. “Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives… The current warming trend is of particular significance because it is unequivocally the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over millennia. It is undeniable that human activities have warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land and that widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, and biosphere have occurred.”

See? And skin doctors agree. They’re prepping their patients as I write this. “Climate change is real and it is happening. Anticipating it and being prepared mentally and physically (skincare routine) is very important,” Dr. Ramachandra says.

How to Protect Your Skin

Sure, a skincare routine shouldn’t be most important part of your apocalypse plan to figure out. But it should be considered. “A variety of skin diseases appear to be worsened by climate change,” Dr. Ramachandra explains. “This includes inflammatory disorders such as eczema (atopic dermatitis) and pemphigus (an autoimmune blistering disorder). We also know that emotional stress causes conditions such as eczema, vitiligo and psoriasis to flare [up]. This would be expected in communities that have been affected by natural disasters.”

Less serious issues like acne can also be triggered by climate change. Someone who might’ve never had a breakout before (rare) might suddenly battle stubborn blackheads. “In warmer climates, increased heat and humidity can cause your skin to sweat, leaving you more prone to acne breakouts, especially if your skin is oily,” Dr. Ramachandra says. This temperature rise can also increase cases of infectious skin diseases like Lymes — which is way more problematic than a few pimples. “An increase in Lyme disease is thought to be related to warmer environments that are more favorable to tick survival, as well as a greater availability of hosts like deer and mice,” Dr. Ramachandra adds.

There are, however, steps you can take to protect yourself — even in spite of the inevitably of climate disaster. To start, Dr. Ramachandra suggests people “try to manage the stress climate change may cause.” Easy enough, right? She also advises you “adjust your skincare routine according to the climate you live in.”

OnePlus first made waves for its high-end flagship smartphone the One Plus One. Since then, the company has continued to pump out interesting models including its newest concept: the OnePlus 11. “Does the rest of America know that the prevailing cool shoe right now is what, to the naked eye, appears to be a normally ugly pair of Asics but actually go for ~$300 on the secondary market?” Grid reporter Matthew Zeitlin tweeted in 2022, right after JJJJound designer Justin Saunders’s special-edition Asics dropped. “You might even see them in certain parts of lower Manhattan.”

Lower Manhattan, he implies, is where the cool people are, and if Asics are pervasive there, it was only a matter of time until they hit the mainstream. Fast forward six months, and they surely have. Asics are everywhere — even the gel-y, Y2K-era-looking pairs.

Why Asics Are Suddenly Super Popular

The brand’s resurgence began more than two years ago, when it tapped Awake NY designer Angelo Baque to lead The Asics Collective — which they likened to a creative residency, not a permanent post. He invested in the brand’s collaborations, which was a way, he argued, to make Asics more in demand. And to the surprise of many, most of which once saw the shoes as an eye sore, it worked.

Just ask Bodega designer Andrew White, who worked on the streetwear shop’s signature GEL-MC PLUS, an all-new silhouette Asics introduced specifically for this collab.

“Asics are wild comfortable. The GEL-cushioning is no joke, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that’s the secret behind their success,” he says. “Asics makes top notch performance running footwear period — and this will continue to happen wherever they happen to sit in the trend cycle [or not]. My friend Jordan Page, the founder of Colour Plus, said it best when talking about products that catch fire as trends move through: Brands and products that are inherently pragmatic will always remain relevant.”

This is why, while it’s gotten white hot as of late, the brand was already popular with dads and podiatrists, who often value function over form at all costs. But for younger shoppers, Asics scratch a different itch.

“When I started thinking about potential ASICS shoes to design [for JJJJound], I was drawn to the GEL-KAYANO 14 — it’s a classic and timeless silhouette,” Saunders says. “The heel design on the sole, the big mesh and the silver panels, the whole sneaker reminds me of those late night walks in the 2000s era, right as the internet was brewing to blow up for our generation.”

Why You Should Buy a Pair of Asics

They recall a simpler time, when shoes were less of a status symbol. Plus, society now is particularly fond of this era’s aesthetics, which is why Von Dutch hats, JNCO jeans and gas station sunglasses are all the rage right now.

“Asics has always had its niche and relevance, especially in performance running,” White explains. “Older heads talk about the GL-III in certain cities; you can find old images of storied New York hustlers like Rich Porter rocking Asics. In our current market and landscape, I would say it was really through collaborations in the early 2000s and into the 2010s, with Patta, David Z, Ronnie Fieg, ALIFE, etc. [that have made Asics popular now].”

Collaborations have clearly always been key, and when if they sell out, people inevitably go looking for general release replacements. There are loads of good ones, too, and they’re often on sale. Maybe I really am coming around on Asics?

Honor Magic Vs

The Honor Magic Vs is the company’s first foldable smartphone that will be available outside of Asia. It has the same basic design as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 — both have flip horizontally open to reveal a larger “more tablet-sized” display. It has a 6.45-inch outside OLED display, but it folds open to a larger 7.9-inch OLED display. It’s powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ processor and you’ll be able to configure it with up to 12GB of RAM. It should cost around $1,599, making it slightly more affordable to its Samsung rival.

Honor also announced its new Magic 5 series of more conventional (non-folding) smartphones. Specifically, there’s the Magic 5 and Magic 5 Pro. Both smartphones have a similar look and feel — with distinctive large circular triple-rear camera systems — but the the Pro is obviously a little more premium. It has a larger display, a more capable camera system, a bigger battery and is configurable with more RAM and storage. The Honor Magic 5 and Magic 5 Pro should cost around $950 and $1,250, respectively.

Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro

The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro are the company’s newest flagship smartphones. Both pack the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ processors and have Leica-branded camera systems. The main difference between the two is size, camera system and charging capabilities. The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro are 6.36- and 6.73-inches, respectively, with the Pro model the only one with the Sony’s one-inch (huge) sensor. The Pro is also capable of fast charging at 120-watts, meaning it can go from zero to fully charged in under 20 minutes. The two smartphones are expected to start around $1,050 and $1,370, respectively.

Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 (Gen 2) and Z16 (Gen 2)

Lenovo announced the second-generation of its ThinkPad Z-series of laptops, specifically the Z13 and Z16. Both laptops have been updated with next-gen AMD processors and larger touchpads with significantly improved haptic feedback. Maybe most significantly is the fact that you’re going to be able to configure the ThinkPad Z13 (Gen 2) out with an optional all-natural lid that’s made out of flaxseeds; in addition to being more environmentally-friendly, it should give the laptop a more aesthetically-pleasing feel. Both laptops will be available in July. The ThinkPad Z13 (Gen 2) is expected to start at $1,249, while the larger ThinkPad Z16 (Gen 2) is expected to start at $1,749.

Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition

Xiaomi unveiled a fresh prototype of its augmented reality glasses that, when wearing, allow you to see the real world and various notifications and alerts from your smartphone. The Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition have a fairly sleek and lightweight design (126 grams). They are also powered by the same processor that’s in the Meta Quest Pro VR headset. The automotive world is moving toward an all-electric future. That will require a massive shift in American buying habits; EVs made up less than five percent of new car purchases in 2022. Ford just patented new technology that may shift internal combustion-obsessed American hearts and minds more than hypothetical tax credits.

One of the Ford F-150 Lightning‘s major selling points is its vehicle-to-load charging capability that permits the vehicle to charge a job site or a home. Ford’s new patent (first spotted by CarBuzz) would make that feature smarter and more practical, allowing the car to function as a de facto home storage battery.

The setup would have the vehicle sharing data with a central server. The server would predict where severe weather and power outages would likely occur and prep the vehicle accordingly. The car would then fully charge itself to 100% — regular charging would be to 80% — and be ready to send power back out into its home system until it reaches its minimum acceptable charge.

Owners would be kept up to speed on the potential risk, the vehicle’s status and the closest available charging points in the event of an outage. Unlike a home storage battery, the car could leave for a bit, fast charge to 80% and return to keep powering devices.

Climate change’s primary day-to-day impact — one that won’t be deniable — in many areas of the country will be the increased risk of extreme weather, especially in Summer and Winter. That weather will create more stress on electrical infrastructure and cause more outages. More frequent power outages will have more Americans looking for supplementary power.

We don’t know when the new storm-predicting capability will make it to Ford’s electric vehicles (recent Michigan weather may convince some at Ford to fast-track it). But we suspect rolling into a dealership to buy your new F-150 Lightning or Mustang Mach E could be more appealing for many customers than finding a local ordinance-approved place to install their noisy, five-figure eyesore of a generator.

Can Sodium Bicarbonate Porridge Revolutionize Your Pre-Workout?

Maurten certainly thinks so. The Swedish brand has long empowered athletes to bring home Olympic medals and world records. Now, thanks to a new ‘sodium bicarbonate fueling system,’ it hopes to launch a full-scale ‘paradigm shift’ in the world of power-based, high-intensity training and competition. The company explains that while sodium bicarbonate can counteract rising acidity (and exhaustion) in the muscles, it’s traditionally been nearly impossible to ingest large amounts of the supplement. However, by encapsulating the bicarb in the company’s Hydrogel Technology, they’ve managed to create a three-part fueling system that can accurately deliver a powerful, longer-lasting dose. Released today, the Maurten Bicarb System is available for athletes everywhere.

Xiaomi Debuts a Lightweight Pair of AR Glasses

To kick off the Mobile World Congress 2023, Xiaomi unveiled its newest flagship smartphone (The Xiaomi 13 Pro) which comes equipped with Leica cameras. That said, the announcement was briefly derailed by the company’s second, surprise, announcement — where the team revealed a chic new pair of augmented reality glasses. Entitled the ‘Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Explorer Edition,’ the smart glasses use the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 found in the Quest Pro, but can be used without a smartphone. For now, they were introduced as a prototype, though some testers described them as, surprisingly, ‘more polished and “ready” than most proof-of-concept prototypes.’

New to Knives? Get Started With the Provoke Trainer

Designed by Joe Caswell for Columbia River Knife and Tool, the Provoke Trainer ($100) is a great knife that allows fans to practice with a karambit to get their bearings. First conceived in Indonesia, traditional Karambit knives offer a curved blade reminiscent of an animal claw. Caswell’s version comes with an unsharpened blade to reduce the risk of injury. Fans can deploy the blade on the impact-resistant folding knife with the push of a thumb (thanks to Kinematic), making it a great starting point for any budding gearhead.
