There, the vehicle donned heavy camouflage as it took a spin for early cold weather testing. While early details are still sparse, the car is now expected to don a CCS Combo 2 connector on the right C-pillar of the car, with all three prototypes photographed displaying the feature. Initially caught on camera by InsideEV’s ‘spy photographers,’ fans can check out the new images here.

Today we’re taking a look at new snow bike accessories, a trail-runner from Arc’teryx and a stylish pour over carafe. This is Today in Gear.

Electric, Self-Driving and CES-Awarded: Meet Ella, the GlüxKind AI Stroller

What makes the GlüxKind AI Stroller worth talking about — by Gear Patrol Studios.

glüxkind strollerGlüxKind

Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

No doubt that most parents would regard the idea of a “self-driving stroller” with a fair amount of skepticism – but what about a stroller that can rock your baby to sleep or help them stay asleep? Or a stroller you can fill with groceries and program to follow you home while you walk hand-in-hand with your toddler? The GlüxKind’s Ella Stroller ($3,800) is an all-new, niche-filling parenting product that’s designed to make every outing a walk in the park.

The robotic child chariot, a CES 2023 Innovation Awards Honoree, is equipped with everything from autonomous ‘driving’ capability (only when no child is inside), a built-in white noise machine and ‘brake assist’ tech, as well as plenty of storage and a modular ‘travel system’ that makes connecting and disconnecting the bassinet a breeze. Car seat integration is “coming soon,” too, though GlüxKind expects to begin shipping the first round of strollers in April this year.

glüxkind strollerGlüxKind

The Backstory

GlüxKind: A Family-Founded “Baby Technology Startup”

GlüxKind was founded in 2020 by Anne Hunger and Kevin Huang (“parents with sky-high standards”), whose own stroller search mostly turned up options they felt were too heavy or difficult to maneuver. Inspired to fill an empty niche, the couple designed Ella as a better product that provides “meaningful support for new parents.”

GlüxKind – a play on the German word Glückskind, which translates basically to “lucky child” – began in the family’s garage in Vancouver and grew rapidly over the course of two years as the company built an expert-led international team that made waves at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show.

This year’s CES received a record 2,100+ submissions for its Innovation Awards program, making GlüxKind’s recognition significant. The Ella earned plenty of press from major publications, including a spot on Gear Patrol’s Best of CES 2023 roundup. The secret to the Ella’s success is manifold, but it all comes back to safety and comfort for parents and their babies.

The Gist

What Makes This Self-Driving Smart Stroller So Cool?

While the idea of a self-driving stroller may be a little hard to wrap your head around, its intelligent tech is undoubtedly familiar. The Ella utilizes its “Advanced Parent Assist System” (autonomous ‘driving’ and braking tech) largely to provide more control than the competition, with the aim of increasing convenience and preventing runaway stroller nightmares. It will carry your groceries (or coats and bags of cheerios and diapers…), and it can rock your baby to sleep.

The Ella is designed to handle fluctuating terrain swimmingly (e.g., driveways and reasonable park paths, not the Appalachian Trail). On inclines, its powerful dual-motor system does all the heavy lifting, while its Adaptive Braking System will function even on steep downhill slopes.

In Hands-Free mode, the Ella will adapt to the user (stroller-er?), automatically, intelligently matching walking speeds and stops/starts to stay within arm’s reach. At all times, the Ella maintains a “360° Safety Bubble,” employing its sensors to constantly monitor surroundings for potential dangers like bikes, cars or scooters, with its auto-brakes at the ready.

That all saves parents plenty of energy, but the Ella’s automatic Rock-My-Baby mode can soother your baby to sleep, providing parents with an on-demand recharge break. Huang and Hunger know that some babies sleep well in moving strollers but wake up as soon as things come to a halt – the Ella will automatically rock when you come to a stop so that neither your kid’s nap nor your sanity will suffer.

Moreover, the stroller’s built-in white noise machine and weather-proof and extremely adjustable bassinet help your baby fall and stay asleep anywhere. The Ella’s ‘travel system’ comprises “a car seat, infant bassinet, and toddler seat” that features magnetic buckles and a five-point harness.

Our POV

This Smart Stroller Was Designed for Parents by Parents

Many of the Ella’s innovative features could only have been dreamt up by experienced parents. GlüxKind emphasizes the stroller is designed especially for “sleep-deprived” new parents, who may not always have the tools (or energy) they need to stay alert on the go. Indeed, with its suite of sleep-friendly features, the Ella is truly designed to help soothe your baby and make every outing that much easier.

With a fully-refundable $200 deposit, fans can reserve their own Ella stroller through the Glüxkind website. Units are going fast – due to demand, pre-orders are on hold until March 2023) – so if you’re expecting to add the Ella to your growing family, mark your calendars now.

Will Adidas Bring Back Kanye West? Here’s Everything We Know

With a billion dollar loss looming over its balance sheet, the German sportswear brand mulls rekindling its relationship with the divisive designer.

kanye west walking down the street with an adidas logo overlayed on the imageGetty Images / Adidas

Editor’s Note [2/24/23]: This is a developing story. As of now, neither Adidas nor Kanye’s camp have confirmed these rumors.

At one point, Kanye West was on top of the world. He’d sold millions of records, created his own record label, started a profitable independent brand and forged official partnerships with a few of the world’s most well-known fashion labels: Adidas, Balenciaga and Gap.

But then things changed. Ye, as many know him by now, spiraled out of control, leaving many wondering whether his outbursts were to be met with more compassion, as they were likely the result of an ongoing mental health crisis. (West has been open about his bipolar disorder diagnosis in the past.)

That being said, what Ye eventually did (and said) cannot be overlooked or excused. His actions ranged from anti-semitism to spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine and the murder of George Floyd and seemingly everything in-between.

The most high-profile collaborators cut business ties and public boycotts led to the closure of West’s JP Morgan Chase business accounts and the shutdown of his school, Donda Academy. But recent reports suggest Adidas may, despite everything, bring West back. Here’s what we know so far.

Why Did Kanye West and Adidas Split?

On October 25, 2022, Adidas announced its decision “to terminate the partnership with Ye immediately, end production of Yeezy branded products and stop all payments to Ye and his companies.” This sent shockwaves through the fashion sphere, where Ye — formerly known as Kanye West — has been a steadfast fixture for nearly 20 years. At one point, many considered him the most influential dresser of all time, with GQ calling him the “Most Stylish Man of the Decade” in 2019.

candice owens kanye west
West and right-wing TV personality Candice Owens sported matching “White Lives Matter” shirts backstage at West’s runway show.

His self-sustaining free fall from the public eye, though, wasn’t out of nowhere. First, he sabotaged his own Paris Fashion Week show with “White Lives Matter” merch made in conjunction with right-wing politics personality Candice Owens. They were photographed together wearing the shirts, to which Ye responded: “I thought the shirt was a funny shirt. I thought the idea of wearing it was funny.”

Then, his October 6th appearance on Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Tonight alerted Adidas execs, who watched his two-hour interview veer into outright extremism: relying on a few ofthe oldest, and most bigoted conspiracy theories, West repeatedly implied Jewish people secretly oversee the world’s finances, citing “them” as the reason his long-standing partnerships were suddenly on the fritz.

While his 360-degree deal with Adidas was officially “under review” for weeks, the brand reached the decision many expected a month earlier: their partnership was over. And for good, Adidas claimed, especially since succeeding appearances on Infowars’s The Alex Jones Show and N.O.R.E. and DJ Effn’s Drink Champs podcast featured Ye openly praising Hitler, denouncing the COVID-19 vaccine as a “mark of the beast” and claiming George Floyd was instead killed with a lethal fentanyl injection, not the knee of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is currently serving a 21-year sentence for murder.

Why Would Adidas Bring Kanye West Back?

In a word: money.

“Should the company irrevocably decide not to repurpose any of the existing Yeezy product going forward, this would result in the write-off of the existing Yeezy inventory and would lower the company’s operating profit by an additional €500 million this year. In addition, adidas expects one-off costs of up to €200 million in 2023,” Adidas’s 2023 Outlook, which published on February 9th, reads.

Within, CEO Bjørn Gulden, who took over shortly after the West deal was terminated, offers a candid assessment of the year ahead.

“The numbers speak for themselves. We are currently not performing the way we should,” he says. “2023 will be a year of transition to set the base to again be a growing and profitable company… We need to put the pieces back together again, but I am convinced that over time we will make adidas shine again. But we need some time.”

Then, in a later earnings call in early March, Gulden said they need even more time to decide: “If you can’t sell and you can’t destroy, what’s your option?” Gulden asked. “That’s why we haven’t made a decision on it, because it’s a very complicated issue… The people that are saying [we should] send the shoes to Turkey or somewhere where people don’t have shoes or there has been a tragedy happening,” he added, “I think [we can] agree that these are not normal shoes. The value of the product is not the physical value of the ingredients. It’s a brand and merchandise that is sold at a high price.”

It seems Adidas is unwilling to offload Yeezys for less they think they’re really worth.

Will Adidas Bring Kanye West Back?

All that being the case, Adidas may actually be preparing to bring West back. Rumors surfaced online this week that the two were “restructuring the deal” that brought West to Adidas in the first place. They were started by an online sneaker “cook up” group called Secret Sauce, which helps members purchase limited and rare sneakers for a monthly fee. They’ve yet to verify their claim, but the rumor has been making the rounds.

“I’d be surprised if it happened,” Complex Sneakers Podcast co-host Brendan Dunne said this week. “I think it makes them look weak as a brand to terminate somebody and then, months later, come back and say, ‘Hey, we realized we’re going to lose a billion dollars if we don’t sell this product. Let’s get back together again.'”

a young man shows off his new yeezy boost model designed by
The days of folks lining up for Yeezy releases are long gone, I’d say. Adidas still aims to find a way to offload unsold inventory.
SOPA Images

The unsold product Dunne refers to comprises $1,200,000,000 worth of deadstock Yeezy apparel and sneakers, which Adidas shelved as soon as their partnership ended. But there are further losses looming over Adidas’s execs’s heads, which has made moving forward without West a bleak reality. They’d no longer be profitable this year and 2024 would then be a “rebound year,” which would widen the gap between Nike and Adidas even more.

It’s possible a return is not in the cards. It might just be a rumor. Or people at Adidas may be trying to gauge how the public would react if they did bring Ye back. There’d be plenty of backlash, I’d argue, but that might not stop Adidas from trying to recoup at least some of the money it would otherwise lose on unsold Yeezy merchandise. It’s ultimately a question of which choice is less expensive.

Right now, it sounds like selling the leftover Yeezy stock would save Adidas more money, but that would require bringing Kanye back. Recent rumors suggest they will, although neither Adidas nor Kanye’s camp have confirmed this. The same “cook up” sneaker group that started the initial rumor announced that the two were back on, stating Adidas would sell the remaining Yeezy inventory but create no new products, effectively extending the original partnership through the sale of these leftover goods.

We cannot confirm this is true, but Adidas will likely have to address these rumors either way.

The North Face’s New Capsule Elevates Archival Styles with High-Tech Features

Tapping into its own archives for inspiration, TNF’s new capsule collection merges past and future for Spring/Summer 2023.

Fashion is cyclical, and the cycle even extends to outerwear, it seems, as evidenced by The North Face’s new retro-inspired Low-Fi Hi-Tek Spring/Summer 2023 Collection. Designed with influence from the brand’s 55-year history and archives, the new capsule is hiding some pretty modern tech underneath its veneer of nostalgia.

There’s no official release from the brand, but The North Face did tell Gear Patrol that the Low-Fi Hi-Tek collection “mixes our heritage styles with classic Icon styles reimagined in new fabrications and color theories.” Inspired in part by the work of Buckminster Fuller, the collection brings together neutral colorways and vibrant blues and LED yellows for a color palette that’s rooted in nature.

TNF reimagines the past with its new Low-Fi Hi-Tek SS23 Collection.
The North Face

Moving on from color and diving into fabrication, the Low-Fi Hi-Tek Collection uses recycled materials, technical and proprietary TNF fabrics like Technical Windwall and water-repellent cotton to bring things full circle. It’s a marriage of past and future, with vintage aesthetics formed from highly technical modern fabrics and materials.

The collection features a range of men’s and women’s outerwear and accessories, but a few key pieces really catch our attention: the ’92 Low-Fi Hi-Tek Nuptse Jacket, the Oxeye Shoes and the ’78 Low-Fi Hi-Tek Cargo Pants.

The men’s version of the ’92 Low-Fi Hi-Tek Nuptse Jacket combines 90s-era styling with modern fabrics: the Utility Brown/Gravel colorway would work in any decade, and the 700-fill down insulation, water-repellent cotton and wind-resistant fabric make it a functional update to a classic look.

These everyday hikers (available in both men’s and women’s versions) may look unassuming, but they feature a breathable upper made with recycled materials, a grippy outsole with 2.5mm lugs, an EVA midsole built for high rebound and energy transfer and a modern bootie construction that prioritizes fit and comfort.

Inspired by vintage Rough Rider pants, this modern take on a heritage style sees updates in its wind-resistant fabric, zip and snap closures and thoughtful pocketing. The relaxed fit is comfortable without being too billowy or loose, and the neutral colorways complement its laidback styling.

Along with our favorites, the rest of the collection is available now on The North Face’s website, with price points ranging from $40 to $360.

Sonos’s Is Gearing Up to Replace the Classic Sonos One

The Verge has obtained the officially marketing photos of Sonos’s upcoming Era 100 and Era 300 speakers.

gear patrolGear Patrol

Editors Note 3/7/2023: Sonos has officially announced the Era 100 and Era 300 speakers. Read all about them, here.

Sonos is gearing up to release two new speakers and a whole new line: the “Era” speakers Era 100 and Era 300. And thanks to the latest leaks obtained by The Verge, we finally know more about each of these speakers, what they are going to look like — yes, it appears that The Verge has obtained the official marketing photos of both speakers — and approximately how much each speaker is going to cost.

Both speakers will include Bluetooth and line-in.

The upcoming Era 100 and Era 300 are planned to be more versatile than traditional Sonos speakers, with built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as well as a USB-C line-in connection. The Bluetooth is important because it’ll make it easier for guests to play music from their own smartphone or device — no need to connect to your home’s Wi-Fi. And the line-in connection means you’ll be able to connect either speaker directly to integrated turntable or a hi-fi system (which currently requires a pricey Sonos Five).

In the above photo, you can see two Era 100 speakers configured in a stereo pair. The left speaker is connected directly to the turntable via USB-C line-in. (This photo was obtained by The Verge.)
The Verge

The Era 100 will replace the Sonos One.

The Era 100 will be the smaller and more entry-level of the two upcoming speakers. You can think of it as elevated version of Sonos’s existing One — in fact, The Verge‘s Chris Welch is reporting that the Era 100 will replace and antiquate the One in Sonos’s lineup. There will be other differences too, as the new Era 100 will have a more rounded design, a larger mid-woofer (for more bass) and a second tweeter so it’ll be able to deliver stereo sound on its own.

sonos speaker on a side table
This is a photo of the Era 300, which is the larger of Sonos’s two upcoming speakers. It is integrated with upward-firing drivers and is poised to deliver a more immersive experience. (This photo was first obtained by The Verge.)
The Verge

The Era 300 will be a whole new kind of speaker for Sonos.

The Era 300 appears to be a little more of a wild card. Even though it appears to be about the size of the Five, but it’s not expected replace the Five. That’s because the Era 300 is a different kind of speaker. The big thing with the Era 300 is that it will have upward-firing drivers — similar to the Sonos Arc — and is designed to deliver exceptionally immersive audio experience that’s optimized for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos. You’ll also be able to designate a pair of Era 300s as rear-channel speakers with either Sonos’s Arc or Beam (Gen 2) soundbars, which should really excite home theater enthusiasts.

The Era 100 is expected to cost in the region of $250, which is a significant hike up from the One’s current $219 price (which was already increased from $199 in September 2021). The Era 300 is expected to cost around $450, meaning it will still be pretty substantially more affordable than the $549 Five.

Both of Sonos’s upcoming Era 100 and Era 300 speakers are expected to be released in late March.

Microsoft has finally made its 10-year contract with Nintendo official. Late last year the company initially announced it would bring Call of Duty to Nintendo if its Activision Blizzard acquisition went through. Under the new deal, Nintendo users will be granted the same CoD access Xbox fans have enjoyed for years. This means both parties will be able to access new features, content and gameplay on the same days – but this all remains contingent on Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. At this point, the deal is still extremely uncertain, and the US Federal Trade Commission has even sued to block the takeover. As a result, fans will have to wait to see what happens, but who can really bear to block another win for Nintendo?

Aviron’s Strong Series Rower Just Made Mid-Workout Adjustments Easier

The latest home fitness machine boasts patent-pending features and gamified training modules to keep you pacing toward success.

aviron strong series rowerAviron

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Rowing can be a fantastic way to get a full-body workout in with less impact on your joints than many alternatives. The modality mixes cardiovascular and strength training to help you get an efficient session in without sacrificing your entire morning or afternoon. Still, chasing split times and managing your wattage can begin to turn dull, if your program isn’t engaging or exciting.

That’s where these folks come in.

Aviron is a brand that’s put the fun back in fitness, offering unique game-led programs, streaming services and Spotify integration to keep your rowing workouts fresh. Now, the brand has leveled up its offerings with the Strong Series Rower. As the second consumer rower in the Aviron lineup, this sleek, innovative silhouette is designed to appeal to a wider variety of athletes by providing more comfort, more performance and (most importantly) more entertainment — all in a more compact frame.

The Aviron Strong Series Rower features patent-pending perks to create a cozier training setup

The latest accessory to be offered by the brand is the all-new Quick Adjustment Resistance Remote. This add-on replaces the traditional handle and allows you to seamlessly toggle your rowing resistance without having to reach forward toward the rotating touchscreen monitor. Instead, you’re able to add or remove resistance from the finish position of your row (when you’re fully extended toward the back of the machine) without having to pause your progress. Changing resistance with just a quick toggle of your thumbs can help eliminate the stop and go nature of rowing, leading to more time efficiency in training and less strain on your back reaching for the dials.

aviron rower quick adjust accessorycourtesy

There are plenty more convenience features showcased across the Strong Series Rower, too. Starting at the feet, you can actually adjust how wide your rowing stance is thanks to Aviron’s patent-pending foot and hip adjustment system. This can help you lock into a comfortable setup for more efficient output. Moving up to the seat, Aviron is the only brand to introduce accessories that improve comfort and accessibility including the plush Cloud Seat for additional comfort, and the Lumbar Support add-on that gives those with back issues extra lower back support. The brand even thought of athlete comfort in getting on and off the rower, elevating the seat height off of the rail system for easier entry and exit.

“Making rowing truly comfortable for the average consumer looking to get a great workout is the only way to finally popularize rowing and bring it into the mainstream,” says Aviron founder and CEO Andy Hoang.

The Aviron Strong Series dimensions are primed for upgrading your home gym setup

Aviron didn’t stop its attention to inclusivity at athlete comfort, however. The overall build of the Strong Series Rower makes it one of the most approachable rowing machines on the market. An innovative floating front design puts the fan and magnetic resistance system below the screen, limiting vibration and movement — hard, intense strokes on other rowers can shake and rattle your home. Additionally, keeping the fan at the front creates a cooling effect as you row, turning you into your own air conditioner. The more you row, the more air you generate.

You might think all this innovation comes with a large footprint, but surprisingly, Aviron is able to pack in all these perks (along with the entertaining slew of training modules) into a rower that measures just 84 inches front-to-back. This can allow for more athletes to take part in home rowing sessions, now that there’s a machine that can fit comfortably in their abode. The Strong Series Rower can also be stored upright without the use of a wall mount, adding another token of convenience to the build.

Where to buy the Aviron Strong Series Rower

Starting today, the Aviron Strong Series Rower is available online, along with the aforementioned accessories like the Cloud Seat, Lumbar Support and Quick Adjustment Resistance Remote. Matter Is the Future of the Smart Home. Here’s Why (And How You Can Get Started)

Matter is the smart home protocol that will unite Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Google and more under one common ecosystem.

a collage of multiple electronic devices with a green backgroundcourtesy

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Matter is a smart home connectivity standard that promises to drastically simplify the smart home experience. Instead of having to worry about if a smart light or smart plug is compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s SmartThings or Google Home — you’ll just have to know if it’s compatible with Matter. Essentially, it’s the one smart ecosystem to unite them all.

If you have yet to hear about Matter, don’t worry — it was just officially launched in the fall of 2022. The good news is it’s backed by all the major smart home ecosystems (such as Apple, Amazon and Google), as well as basically every smart home device maker (like Philips Hue, Logitech, Eve, Eufy, Nanoleaf and others). So there are going to be a lot of smart devices that work with Matter in the very near future.

As of February 2023, all the major smart home ecosystems support and are integrated with Matter. The problem is the amount of smart home gadgets that support Matter — there aren’t that many. However, that’s poised to change rather quickly over the course of the next few months and definitely before the end of 2023.

How does Matter work?

the matter logo placed over top an image of someone sitting in their living roomcourtesy

Matter isn’t like most other smart home connectivity standards because it’s way more versatile. It’s able to connect and communicate with smart home devices over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth LE as well as Thread, a low-power mesh networking standard (similar to Zigbee or Z-Wave).

Matter will connect to less demanding smart home devices like smart plugs and smart lights over Thread (or whatever other low-bandwidth standard that device uses) and to more demanding devices like smart TVs and smart home cameras over faster standards like Wi-Fi. It will then connect and allow them all to communicate with each other. That’s the premise anyway.

How will this change my smart home experience?

Matter will not drastically change the smart home experience in terms of how you add or control smart home gadgets. If you have an Apple smart home, you’ll still use the Home app. If you have an Amazon smart home, you’ll still use the Alexa app. If you have a Google smart home, you’ll still use the Google Home app. And if you have a Samsung smart home, you’ll still use the SmartThings app.

The difference is that Matter will open the door to smart home gadgets from other ecosystems that you previously weren’t able to use. For example, if you have a smart home built around HomeKit and have always wanted to use a smart plug that had previously only worked with Amazon or Google’s smart homes, you will be able to use it — as they both work with Matter.

There will be some limitations to this cross-platform connectivity, however, especially at the start. Since Matter is really only in its beginning phases, some advanced features and customizations (like automations and scenes) of some gadgets might not work with cross-platform gadgets right now.

For example, if you have a smart light that only works with Google Home or Alexa and you have HomeKit, you might not be able to get that smart light to automate that light so it changes colors at certain hours of the day. These features should be supported over time, but maybe not just at the start.

How do I get started with a Matter smart home?

tucker bowe
Google, Apple and Amazon have all rolled out Matter support to most of their current- and older-generation smart speakers and smart displays.
Tucker Bowe

The chances are that you are already well on your way to a Matter smart home. That’s because the first thing you need is something called a Matter Controller — which is really a smart hub or bridge that supports Matter — and you already likely have one.

Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung have all rolled out software updates to pretty much all of their smart speakers, smart displays and smart home hubs so that they can function as Matter Controllers right now. In order to get them to work properly, you’ll also have to have the latest software update downloaded to your iPhone or Android smartphone, both of which support Matter now too.

What smart home gadgets work with Matter now?

There aren’t that many smart home gadgets that support Matter just yet, but that’s about to change. At CES 2023 earlier this year, a lot of smart home manufacturers announced that they would be releasing new gadgets that support Matter — or rolling out Matter support via a software update to their existing gadgets — starting in the spring of 2023. But as of right now, there are basically no smart home gadgets that support Matter. That includes smart plugs, smart lights, smart thermostats, smart locks and smart cameras.

If you’re wondering if your current smart home gadgets — like smart plugs, smart lights, smart cameras, etc. — can and will be able to support Matter, the answer isn’t super clear. It’s anticipated that some smart home gadgets will be able to gain Matter support over a Wi-Fi update, but it’s not guaranteed. The newer the smart home gadget, the better chance it has of gaining a software update for Matter. But it really is on a case-by-case basis.

If you’re interested in learning more about the various smart home devices that will support Matter, via a future software update or because they are upcoming products, you can check them out, here.

As for the smart home devices that currently support Matter — pretty much all of them are Matter Controllers — we’ve listed our favorites below.

This Spring’s Hottest Trend Is a Former Fashion Faux Pas

What do I have in common with Harrison Ford and Austin Butler? Not much, aside from the fact that we all love wearing a blazer with jeans.

We’re coming off of a few years filled with shlubby outfits — sweatpants and slides, hoodies and pajama pants, and so forth. For special occasions, maybe you donned the occasional dress shirt to get through a meeting without looking like you’d rather be in bed (even though you probably would).

This was fun for a while…but, honestly, I’ve been yearning for change lately. It’s time to start dressing again. I’m here to advise you on the simplest way to bring a touch of class back to casual days without sacrificing comfort. The answer: pair a blazer with your favorite pair of blue jeans. Boom, problem solved.

Above all else, my rule is to keep it simple. You may be tempted to get gussied up to the nines, rocking every odd piece you have ever bought in an attempt to take back what sartorial nous you had before the pandemic. Maybe you just think it’s time to ditch the loungewear and get dressed for real. Either way, you can’t go wrong if you go for something timeless and deceptively easygoing.

How to Wear a Blazer with Jeans — the Right Way

I’ve been rocking a blazer with my favorite vintage Levi’s for a while now; my favorite blazer is a Chaps Ralph Lauren number I got on eBay for $20. By today’s standards, it’s probably about one size too big, but for me, it fits like a classic blazer: just wide enough in the midsection to not hug my hips and with enough room in the arms to flex without busting out of the thing (looking at you, Daniel Craig). It’s the perfect fit and it came at, basically, the lowest cost imaginable for a quality blazer.

You don’t have to listen to me, though. Some of the most stylish guys around swear by this particular pairing. In a recent conversation with Brendon Babenzien, Creative Director at J.Crew and founder of Noah, he told me that he’d been wearing blazers with jeans for as long as he can remember. Indeed, take a look at Noah’s lookbook and you’ll see the brand’s stellar DIY suiting, which is the perfect antidote to stuffy menswear.

I also checked in with podcaster and menswear multi-hyphenate Chris Black, who co-hosts the podcast How Long Gone, to get his thoughts on the style — one which he wears all the time.

Blazer and Blue Jeans: an Actor-Approved Outfit

“Jeans with a blazer is such a classic look,” he says. “The best examples are ’90s actors traveling, most often in the airport. Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Kyle MacLachlan, Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, the list goes on. Simple blue jeans with a T-shirt and a blazer worn casually. The footwear can go from loafers to cowboy boots. Most of it works.”

Black also put the two together in a campaign he did with Palmes Society, sporting one of the brand’s blazers with some vintage denim. Black does fail to mention my personal favorite, though, Harrison Ford, who made a blazer and jeans his go-to look back in the day, pairing it with a metal-tipped western belt and a perfectly worn button-down.

It’s not just ’90s actors, though. Elvis star Austin Butler was seen rocking a navy double-breasted blazer with a denim shirt and jeans at Cinemacon in Las Vegas. As Butler proves, just because the look was popular a few decades ago doesn’t mean it’s going anywhere now. If anything, we’re about to enter a golden era of casual suiting, sport coats and blazers. Whether you’re choosing to scour eBay for vintage Armani or Ralph Lauren (which I highly, highly recommend) or want to cop something right off the rack, a blazer and jeans will always be there for you.

Traeger’s New Ironwood Pellet Grills: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

While the Ironwood name may be familiar, these revamped, somewhat pricier models are anything but.

traeger ironwood grillTraeger

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

The words “Traeger” and “pellet grill” are nearly synonymous, considering that the brand’s founder invented the product category in the 1980s. So whenever Traeger comes out with a new one, it’s pretty big news in the grilling industry. The brand made waves last year with their top-of-the-line Timberline grill series revamp, and now they’re doing it again with a reimagined take on the premium Ironwood grill lineup. The new grills offer a number of Timberline-level features but at more approachable price points.

Products in the Guide

The Traeger Ironwood and Ironwood XL

There are two grills in Traeger’s revamped Ironwood series: The Ironwood and the Ironwood XL. These two grills effectively replace the Ironwood 650 and Ironwood 885 in Traeger’s lineup, slotting just below the Timberline series in their pellet-grilling hierarchy. The new grills feature different total cooking areas from their previous-gen counterparts, with the new Ironwood having a smaller 616 total square inches of cooking surface compared to the Ironwood 650’s 649 square inches. Meanwhile, the Ironwood XL tops the Ironwood 885’s total cooking area, beefing up from 885 square inches to 924 square inches.

traeger ironwood grillTraeger

The new Ironwood grills add features from the Timberline series

Last year’s Timberline series really upped the ante in the pellet grill market by adding several advanced features, and now Traeger is bringing some of the most exciting ones to the new Ironwood grills. First and foremost is the full-color touchscreen display, appearing for the first time on a non-Timberline grill. It’s set up to work in conjunction with another piece of borrowed Timberline technology, Smart Combustion, which maintains precise temperatures in the grill to ensure that whatever you’re cooking comes out just as you intended.

The new Ironwood also borrows the Timberline’s EZ-Clean Grease & Ash Keg that collects all your drippings and spent pellets in one easy-to-remove bucket, making cleanup a breeze. And it features the Timberline’s Pop-And-Lock accessory rail and compatibility with ModiFire accessories, allowing for greater customization.

traeger ironwood grillTraeger

How the new Ironwood grills compare to the previous generation

In addition to the new cooking surface sizes and the borrowed features from the Timberline series, the new Ironwood grills make some additional improvements over the previous generation, while also carrying over some of their tried-and-true features. New is the FreeFlow Firepot, which Traeger says improves wood-fired flavor thanks to increased smoke circulation. The new Ironwood also adds a second wired thermometer probe for increased versatility.

Returning features include Traeger’s signature WiFIRE Technology for connected control via your smartphone or virtual assistant, Downdraft Exhaust and Super Smoke Mode for optimum smoking capabilities and a pellet sensor to let you know when you’re running low on fuel.

Traeger’s Ironwood grills pricing and availability

The new Ironwood grills are available to purchase directly from Traeger as of today, and they see a decent increase in SRP over their predecessors. The new Ironwood is priced at $1,800, a big jump over the Ironwood 650’s $1,300 price tag, and even more than the Ironwood 885’s $1,500 price. The Ironwood XL tops out the range at $2,000.

While there may be some sticker shock here when compared to the old generation, the new Ironwood grills are still a bargain compared to the Timberline series. Those grills start at a whopping $3,500, and considering that a number of their premium features have now made their way to the Ironwood grills, $1,800 for the Ironwood is suddenly looking pretty reasonable.

Pharrell Is Taking Over Louis Vuitton. Here’s Everything We Know So Far

The storied producer has quite the eye, but can he lead a major fashion label?

pharrellCourtesy of Louis Vuitton

Although Louis Vuitton has quite the legacy, its clothing collections are rather recent, at least in the grand scheme of things. The first ready-to-wear Louis Vuitton clothing collection debuted in 1997, under the direction of then Creative Director Marc Jacobs (1997-2013). Since then, several designers have followed in his footsteps, each overseeing the evolution of the men’s lines: Kim Jones (2011-2018) and Virgil Abloh (2018-2021).

Jacobs laid the foundation; Jones, who now runs Dior, built on it; and Abloh took it to new heights. As such, when Abloh passed, Louis Vuitton waited patiently to fill his role. Plus, since his terminal cancer was kept mostly under wraps, even to the higher ups at Louis Vuitton, reports suggested, they took time to rightfully grieve his loss.

“We are all shocked by this terrible news,” Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy, said in a statement on the day of Abloh’s death.

Finding Virgil Abloh’s Successor

Finding someone fit to assume his role was no small feat, especially since Louis Vuitton became so engrossing under his guidance. He was a graduate school-trained architect capable of captivating the masses, in a discipline he didn’t study, to boot. But he knew the “culture” and what it wanted, which made Louis Vuitton the center of attention, all year round.

Above all else, though, Abloh opened doors — not just for his collaborators but his successor, too. He was the first Black artistic director at Louis Vuitton, a milestone met in the company’s 164th year.

“Someone said [my appointment at Louis Vuitton] felt like [Barack] Obama getting elected President — like the same epiphany. We got that it was possible, but we didn’t think [it would happen]. When it’s official, it’s different,” he famously told WWD in an interview.

Pharrell Joins Louis Vuitton as Artistic Director, Men’s

Now, it’s officially happening again. Celebrity producer, fashion designer and philanthropist Pharrell Williams will take over as mens’ artistic director, making his official debut during Paris Fashion Week in June 2024. For fans of Skateboard P, this announcement comes as no surprise — they know he can do it. But for designers by trade, this is a worrying trend.

Plenty immediately wondered why Louis Vuitton picked Pharrell over the other names that were purportedly tied to the open position — like KidSuper’s Colm Dillane, who just did a one-off capsule for the brand, or eponymous designers like Grace Wales Bonner, Martine Rose or Telfar Clemens, who each run labels of their own but have collaborated with brands like Nike, Adidas and Tommy Hilfiger, to name a few.

What Does This Mean for LVMH?

Pharrell is obviously a higher profile person, with millions of followers across his social profiles, plenty of other businesses to his name (Billionaire Boys Club, Ice Cream, Human Made, with Nigo, Humanrace and his myriad Adidas collabs) and hundreds of hit records in his discography. But what he can do for the fashion house remains to be seen. One can infer, however, they want him to remain a multi-hyphenate.

“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new men’s artistic director,” Louis Vuitton CEO Pietro Beccari said in a statement. “His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton toward a new and very exciting chapter.”

What exactly is that new chapter, per se? Writer and brand strategist Clayton Chambers says new might not be the right term, at least not for LV.

“Ultimately this move is further evidence of how traditional European fashion houses are thinking about the role of creative director / designer,” he says. “Louis Vuitton became known as of late for going against the grain, and appointing Pharrell to this role shows how they’re thinking about the future of luxury and commerce, which is why they want someone who can curate and connect the dots across art, music, entertainment and fashion.”

Does this spell the introduction of a Louis Vuitton skincare line? Will LVMH buy his brand, Humanrace? Will Pharrell work hand in hand with Kenzo director, and close friend, Nigo? Are Pharrell’s prior partnerships in the luxury space — Chanel Pharrell, Joopiter, etc. — foreshadowing? In the near term, there will be plenty of speculation. To truly know, though, you’ll need a front row seat at next June’s Paris runway show.

What Does the Ultimate Dream Bike Look Like? Cannondale’s LAB71 Aims to Find Out

Sparing no expense, the brand’s new ultra-premium tier of products is writing the future of bicycles.

cannondale lab71Cannondale

A few weeks ago, Cannondale invited Gear Patrol to its Wilton, Connecticut HQ for a sneak peek at a top-secret project. They said it was called LAB71 (in honor of the brand’s 1971 founding), but additional details were scant. So I hopped on my Bonneville and rode up from New York City to learn more.

What I discovered within the walls of the spacious compound was impressive. LAB71 essentially poses the question: If there were no limits, what kind of bike would you build? And its designers and engineers answered by developing the highest-performance road, gravel and mountain bikes they could imagine.

I got to see and touch the yet-unreleased road and gravel bikes up close, and while the current SuperSix EVOs and Topstones are already winners, these editions are truly next level. Imagine the lightest materials (sooo much carbon fiber), shaped for premium responsiveness and aerodynamics, combined with the most innovative componentry and topped off with lovingly applied details and custom paint jobs, adding up to two-wheeled stallions with speed matched only by their style.

cannondale lab71Cannondale

Yes, I am waxing ecstatic here, but it’s hard not to after seeing the bikes up close — and of course lifting them. For the road bike, we’re talking like 15 pounds, right on the edge of the UCI legal limit — which stands to reason, as these are the bikes Cannondale’s sponsored racers are actually competing on right now.

Of course, that kind of performance comes at a price. Cannondale was hazy on specifics but hinted the road bike price points will exceed even the most expensive current framesets and full builds, so something like $15k for the latter. That figure is simultaneously bonkers and completely reasonable, because LAB71 is the playground where the biggest dreams of the brand’s designers and engineers go to ride free.

Individual models will begin rolling out March 1st, at which point we will be able to share many more details — and subsequently test to find out if these bikes actually ride as good as they look. In the meantime, the video below provides a glimpse of the brand’s grand ambitions. Yes, it’s a marketing tool. But it’s worth watching anyway before your next ride (on any bike) because it’s brief, beautiful and inspiring as hell.

Ford May Build an Even Beefier Expedition Raptor, Report Says

That could explain why someone in Michigan appeared to be testing a J300 Land Cruiser.

preproduction timberline model with available ford accessories shown available winter 2022 always consult the owner’s manual when off road driving, know your terrain and trail difficulty, and use appropriate safety gearFord

A J300 GR Sport Toyota Land Cruiser was spotted on a truck full of test vehicles in America. Our best bet — given the Michigan plates and the presence of Jeep Wranglers and a BMW M4 — was that Ford was benchmarking it. Now, we may have a little more insight into why Ford may have wanted to benchmark a J300.

Ford Authority, citing anonymous sourcing, reports that Ford is considering building an even more off-road capable Expedition. It’s not confirmed that it will be an Expedition Raptor, but calling the new SUV an Expedition Raptor has not been ruled out.

Can Ford build an Expedition Raptor?

An Expedition Raptor seems straightforward for Ford to build. The Expedition Timberline already features more or less the F-150 Raptor engine with the high-output 3.5-liter V6 putting out 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. It packs 33-inch all-terrain tires, the F-150 Raptor’s skid plate, 10.6 inches of ground clearance and the Bronco’s Trail Turn Assist.

Anything above and beyond the Expedition Timberline would surely qualify as “a Raptor.” Ford probably could have gotten away with calling that vehicle an Expedition Raptor with a few styling tweaks.

Should Ford build an Expedition Raptor?

It would make sense. The Expedition has been losing market share against other large SUVs. An Expedition Raptor could be a differentiator for Ford. The GMC Yukon and Toyota Sequoia are capable off-road and offer AT4 and TRD Pro trims respectively. But they are not off-roaders per se. The Wagoneer is a Jeep product, but it’s not a trail-rated one. And Toyota no longer offers the Land Cruiser.

The Raptor “sub-brand” is already expanding. Ford added the Bronco Raptor and has confirmed a Ranger Raptor is coming. A three-row Raptor vehicle would be the natural next step. And an Expedition Raptor would be an easier route to get there than working a three-row Bronco from scratch.

There are many makers of good kitchen knives in the world and there comes a moment when investing in something that’ll last longer (and perform better) than Victorinox’s dirt cheap, internet-famous chef’s knife or Wustof’s similarly affordable option is wise. These options will be more expensive, but what you get for the money is clearer than day: superior materials (in the blade and handle), construction and design.

Knife steel can’t be compared or stratified on a simple step graph — there’s carbon and stainless steel, and many levels and variations within that. But finding knives that suits you often comes down to asking yourself if you prioritize top-end performance or easier maintenance. Zwilling is one of those makers of very good kitchen knives, and its knives lean toward the latter.

The brand’s knives are stainless steel (the exact mixture is proprietary, sadly), mostly stain and corrosion resistant and keep an edge pretty well (I’ve used this 5.5-inch Santoku knife for more than a year without chips or dulling). Today, a whole lot of them are discounted up to 73 percent. This is a super rare chance to get some of our favorite knives at a discount, so don’t wait.

How to Get Salt Stains Off Your Boots

Winter streets wreak havoc on even the toughest boots. Here’s how to bring them back to life.

walking in new yorkIvan McClellan

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

During winter, it can be difficult to defend your favorite footwear agains the elements; snow, yes, but also the salt that cities use to de-slick streets and sidewalks. If you’re facing the fluffy stuff right now, surely the salt’s coming — it’s only a matter of time.

The blue kind’s the worst; not only does it leave the same stains as regular street salts, but it affects an iridescent dye, too. Taking the proper steps to care for your shoes and boots will not only guarantee they last through this winter, but well beyond it, too.

After all, you’re asking a lot of them — but rightfully so. Follow these easy steps to get your footwear back in shape.

What You’ll Need

Products in the Guide

How to Remove Road Salt

Step #1: Stuff Your Boots

Soaked shoes can lose their shape easily. The excess moisture makes the leather more pliable and more prone to warping. The best solution is to stuff your shoes with cedar shoe trees as they maintain the shoe’s shape while absorbing excess moisture and fending off offensive odors. If you’re treeless, the next best thing is newspaper.

Step #2: Dab Them with This Solution

Next, remove any salt stains by dabbing the boots with a towel and a solution of one part white vinegar with two parts water. The vinegar helps to break up the salt and lifts it to the surface of the leather.

Step #3: Condition Your Boots

Though your shoes have just gotten the salt out of their system, they’re still thirsty. They’ve been stripped of vital oils and vitamins in the process and need to be replenished before stepping out again. If you don’t, the leather can dry out and crack (neither of those things are good). Condition them with a leather lotion to restore those essential nutrients which will keep the leather healthy.

Step #4: Protect Them from Future Problems

Now that the leather has been fed, the last step is to protect your shoes for their next outing. Leather waxes and leather protectors help provide a barrier against the elements, ensuring that your shoes can make it a few more paces before needing to go this whole routine again. Once you’ve conditioned your shoes with leather lotion, apply a leather wax/protector all around the shoes, making sure to get into the welts and stitching.
