Getting into Splitboarding? These Beautiful Boards Will Double Your Fun

The category has come a long way in the past few years, and these three well-designed shred sticks are proof.

Like a wonderful variety of skiers and snowboarders, I’ve found myself hiking farther and farther into the backcountry, more and more often, over the past few years. This past season was the most ambitious, with various adventures taking me to such far-flung, lift-free destinations as Colorado’s Bluebird Backcountry (R.I.P.) and Canada’s Chic Chocs.

While these trips gave me the chance to boost my backcountry skills while earning turns with friends, they also provided ample opportunities to field-test some pretty impressive splitboards โ€” and see just how far the design and functionality of this category has come.

As someone who spent his first few touring seasons wrestling with a Rossignol Sushi Split (a hella fun downhill board that is hellish on the uphill for a noob like yours truly), I can attest that when you are doing it all yourself, what’s underfoot can mean the difference between backbreaking frustration and powder-slashing bliss. With that in mind, here are some thoughts on three sweet splitboards I heartily recommend, plus a couple additional items I dig.

Best Uphiller: K2 Freeloader

This board made its debut in the Chic Chocs north of Quebec, and wow was I stoked to have it after the first half of a nearly 2,000-mile road trip. While the uphill paths were pretty well laid out on the mountains around Murdochville, that’s not to say they were not technical โ€” festooned with narrow passes, steep climbs and tricky switchbacks. While I did not exactly ace those all of those challenges, I would have been lost without the Freeloader, which has a number of features to make uphilling easier. I found the squared-off shape made getting into the rhythmic slide-step smoother, while the ultra-light core eased the effort and the Pomoca skins made every plant more stable.

Just because this board is an uphill champ doesn’t mean it isn’t a blast on the way down too. Tip-to-tail carbon fiber strings keep the deck lively and nimble underfoot, while a carbon-infused 5500 sintered base retains wax and reduces drag for swift and satisfying descents.

Right now, the Freeloader is an incredible deal for someone just getting into splitboarding. Not only is it on sale for a whopping 542 bucks off, but of the three options here, it’s the only one that comes with climbing skins (as well as pucks, heel risers and mounting hardware). Quality skins can cost well over $200, so having them included removes one more barrier to entry from the jump.

Most Versatile: Weston Backwoods

This board has kind of a fun backstory as, after landing in Denver, we actually picked up the tester right from the house of Weston marketing manager Sean Eno on the way to Bluebird Backcountry, an amazing backcountry-only area near Steamboat that unfortunately pulled up stakes after the 2022-2023 season. Thankfully, we got to spend a day hiking up and sliding down this one-of-a-kind oasis before that happened.

A staple of Weston’s line, the Backwoods has three times been named an editor’s choice by Backcountry Magazine, including this season. It was pretty easy for me to see why, because going up and down on this thing is equally smooth. The skins mount up without the use of holes (aka “holeless base technology”), while a mid-stiff flex, a combo of poplar, bamboo and carbon stringers, a wide nose and a tapered tail enable agility in trees and plenty of glorious glide on powder.

Additionally, I took the Backwoods out for a lift-accessed day at Steamboat and it shredded machine-cut black diamonds pretty solidly too. It did start to feel a bit heavy for me after many laps, which is the perfect excuse to mention that Weston also offers a $1,149 carbon version that’s well over a pound lighter in every size.

Best Downhiller: Jones Storm Chaser

Unfortunately, I was not able to procure a Storm Chaser until the end of the season, at which point there was just one trip left on the books, a cross-country mission to Bend, Oregon โ€” mostly to sample the insane local beer scene but also to hit Mt. Bachelor’s slopes. For that reason I did not really get a chance to test out its uphill capabilities, but was there ever any doubt it would top the downhill category? Just look at the thing.

Seriously though, with a swallowtail silhouette designed by surf shaper Chris Christenson, this board is destined to float on powder with ease, and in the small patches of pow we hunted down at Bachelor in April, the Storm Chaser rose to the occasion. Elsewhere on the mountain, I found that the Tech 2.0 edges supplied much-needed traction, while a short sidecut and 3D contour base made turning and slashing easy and fun.

As with the Backwoods, you do have to shell out for skins, and I’ll have more to report on their performance when I update this story after my next trip. In the meantime, I also want to mention that all three of these boards employ some version of sturdy Karakoram Ultra Clips, which help hold things together so tightly, you might forget you’re on a split.

Bonus Gear: 2 Other Clutch Items

Obviously you need loads of other gear for legit backcountry boarding, including splitboard bindings, collapsible poles, an avalanche beacon/probe/shovel, a touring-friendly pack and potentially more alpine-ready items like an ice axe and crampons. We’re not going to get into all of that here, but here are two items I tried this past season that impressed.

a black and red swordTSL Outdoor

TSL Carbon 5 Trekking Poles

These four-season poles have a lot of great features, including magnetic straps that make it easy to remove your hands without wiggling them out of the straps, grippable foam handles and collapsibility into three sections for compact stashing in or on your pack. (Yes, I am riding with them full length at the top of this page โ€” forgive me, it was a wide-open descent.)

One other unintended feature that’s handy for splitboarding: The hole left when you remove the strap is great for reaching down with your pole and adjusting the heel height of your bindings.

Splitboarding gets expensive fast, and you can easily spend $400 on a beacon alone. You can also get your wallet drained renting a beacon, shovel and probe every time you head out. Better bet is to score a deal on an entry-level package, and upgrade down the road when you get more serious.

I used this little kit all last season and it served me well. The beacon has loads of battery life (50 hours in search mode, 250 hours in transmit), the probe packs to 17.7 inches and extends to 106, and the collapsible shovel weighs just a bit over a pound (20.8 ounces). Use the money you save to hire a good guide so you (hopefully) don’t have to use this stuff (beyond training) in the first place.

Meta Quest 3 Review: A Window Into Our AR / VR Future

Welcome to your augmented reality tomorrow.

Virtual reality is one of those technologies that’s been lionized, demonized and romanticized endlessly over the years, but in the end, always seems to be a few years from becoming a widespread addition to our lives. I can recall playing with an acquaintance’s Nintendo Virtual Boy back in the mid-1990s, being amazed at scanning a 32-bit digital realm of reds and blacks that left me briefly feeling like Arnold’s T-800 … until I got bored with it and went outside to play instead.

Likewise, augmented reality has seemed to hover on the edge of widespread adoption, in search of both killer app and proper hardware. A decade back, I had an iPhone app which would display the direction and distance to all nearby New York City subway stops, enabling me to follow the proverbial yellow brick road to wherever I needed to go. It was fun, but only lasted a couple years โ€” presumably due to the fact that most people are more used to following directions on, y’know, a map.

Products in the Guide

In the last few years, though, it’s been Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook empire that have been trying the hardest to move the AR / VR ball downfield, even going so far as to rename the company “Meta” to stress its mission focus on the, ahem, metaverse.

The company’s latest device that attempts to take advantage of this potential future โ€” assuming that ChatGPT and its successors don’t learn all our secrets and devour society before Zuck can get people fully invested in the metaverse โ€” is the Meta Quest 3, the company’s first headset to include augmented reality features. Those are enabled in large part by the trio of blisters packing stereoscopic cameras and range-finding sensors on the front of the device, which both help the wearer see the world around them and help the device map out potential obstacles for when you’re immersed in your own personal holodeck simulation. (It’s also slimmer and sleeker than previous models.)

The Quest 3’s biggest rival will come next year, with the arrival of Apple’s hotly anticipated Vision Pro. Even so, the two will be far apart in a lot of ways: visual quality, design, ecosystem โ€” and, most importantly, price. While Apple’s device starts at $3,499, the Quest 3 starts at $499.

Meta Quest 3: What We Think

The Quest 3’s augmented reality features give it an impressive leg up on prior devices that trapped you in virtual realms, which both open up new AR-specific uses and simply make using the goggles for VR more convenient. The virtual reality games and programs are compelling to watch, play with and use, and even viewing more traditional media feels groundbreaking when leveraged through AR. It’s an impressive step on the way to a future of Vision Pros, supersmart spectacles and Iron Man HUDs. Still, it hasn’t yet broken free of all the issues that have dogged VR/AR for some time, from difficulty using with glasses to the occasional bout of motion sickness, and the controls aren’t as intuitive as more traditional tech devices.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

Augmented reality does feel like the future (if a beta version of it)

a person playing a game wearing a meta quest 3 headset
I’m not sure if this model is meant to represent what the user is seeing on his end, but if so, well, the real version isn’t quite that good. It’s still cool, though.
Meta

Sliding on a virtual reality helmet has always been a bit disorienting; the world disappears, leaving your eyes to comprehend a low-grade simulacrum instead. It’s easy to become disoriented, and the difficulty of strapping and releasing the device to your head.

The first wonder of augmented reality is that it lets you slide back into the real world. Instead of having to pull the device off and suspend your session to take care of mundane tasks, you can minimize what you’re doing in Meta-world and just … do real-world things.

The Meta Quest 3 doesn’t show reality in crystal clarity, mind you. The feed coming through its cameras feels like a video chat over a low-speed connection; the world seems pixellated, the colors marbled and simple. Still, it’s good enough to help you navigate your house without hitting anything and enable you to grab your preferred soda from the fridge, or avoid your cat’s food bowls.

The second, arguably more impressive feature of augmented reality is the ability to superimpose the virtual world over the actual one. Open up a video app โ€” I tried both YouTube and PlutoTV โ€” and the video appears in a floating two-dimensional panel that hovers in the middle of your room, in line with your eyes at the time you popped it open. Watching Star Trek on it felt like a revelation โ€” one of those rare moments where a product makes you feel a step closer to the future of Kirk and Picard.

The controls and interface are a little funky

The dual controllers for the Meta Quest 3 are hand-specific. Each packs two control buttons, two triggers โ€” one each for index finger and thumb โ€” and a joystick, as well as different menu buttons.

Anyone used to the ease of navigating the digital world with either a keyboard and mouse or the flick of a finger on touchscreen glass โ€” which is to say, pretty much everyone nowadays โ€” may find the Meta Quest 3’s user interface a little finicky.

Power it on, and you’re met with a home screen hovering in front of you, complete with items you can select using the wireless controllers in your left and right hands. Instead of free-floating mouse pointers, each controller gives off a sort of virtual laser beam, which you then hover over the icon you want and click the controller’s trigger to select.

Thing is, though, those “laser beams” feel a little shaky, at least compared to a mouse or trackpad that’s constantly being supported by a table or laptop. And since they follow your hands at all times, you have to reacquire your targets every time you move your hands โ€” and trust me, you move them a lot. Plus, depending on how the home screen loads, it might show up so small as to make reading and tapping those icons unreadable โ€” and embiggening it isn’t as intuitive as it should be. It’s not a dealbreaker, but Meta certainly could use some more human-focused UI experts from Google or Apple if the company really wants to get into this game.

It works with glasses, but not perfectly

a man wearing a mask
The Meta Quest 3 fits over glasses fairly well, but it won’t do anything for your hair.
Will Sabel Courtney

Early versions of Meta’s VR headsets, like most competitors of the era, weren’t really meant for those of us who wear prescription glasses. Several years ago, I took an Oculus Go out for a spin a few times, but had to bust out my outdated high school eyeglasses โ€” sourced from the Matrix-adjacent era when oval Oakley lenses were all the rage โ€” just to find a pair that could fit inside the headset.

The Quest 3 is much more accommodating of glasses frames and prescription lenses, with an adjustable face shield that slides forwards and back. The system makes it much easier for those of us who can’t / don’t like to wear contacts to try out the device … but it’s still not an ideal solution.

My glasses are midsized and square, and while they do manage to fit in the device, it’s not a great fit. The Quest 3 pushes them up too high onto my nose, making them feel uncomfortable on my face, and throwing off my focal point; the latter effect is exacerbated by the fact that the glasses also cause the device to ride a bit too high. After using the device, I’m always left with a sense โ€” real or imagined, I’m not sure โ€” that the device has bent my glasses in some slight way, which certainly doesn’t make me want to strap the Quest 3 back on my head soon.

If I were planning on using them regularly, I’d likely buy a second pair of smaller-lensed, thin-framed specs just for use with the Quest 3. Still, in the long run, I’d really rather prefer the Apple Vision Pro’s method of inserting prescription lenses directly into the device.

Virtual reality has come a long way, but it’s still far from seamless

Immersive VR videos that record in a complete sphere around you are truly fascinating from a technical standpoint, but as of now, they’re of limited practical value. They tend to be short โ€” those files are biiiiiig โ€“ but they’re arguably more limited by the fact that human vision can’t perceive the majority of what’s being projected. Our eyes can only take in around a max of 220 degrees of horizon, and around the same on the vertical axis; that means the vast majority of the 360-times-360-degree video on a true immersive VR presentation is going unseen most of the time. Waving your head around to spot the sharks coming up behind you is fun, but it doesn’t make for great storytelling โ€” something necessary for artists to buy in.

Gaming is a more natural fit for the device, even arguably perhaps the best until something else comes along. I tested out a free first-person shooter called Population: One, which felt a little like a past-gen Xbox or PlayStation game โ€” a little blocky, but fluid, with graphics neither worthy of praise nor damnation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch

The gameplay is certainly immersive โ€” both in terms of the depth and detail of the environment and the controls, which combine both tactile button taps and physical hand movements with the dual controllers. I had to physically reach out to grab ammo packs and weapons, load magazines and rack slides with actual motions, even climb walls hand over hand โ€” all while also using the joysticks on the remote to walk about and pivot my POV (at least, when I didn’t want to turn my head). It felt far more intuitive than the typical button tapping of traditional consoles, although there was certainly still a bit of a learning curve.

Still, while I came away impressed, I also came away needing Dramamine. A 10-minute video game session left me feeling disoriented and dizzy, and only in part from listening to prepubescent boys spewing racial remarks in the game. Between the confusing divergence of an immobile body and a rapidly, jerkily moving perspective and the pressure of my glasses being pressed into an awkward position, it felt far less natural than playing on a TV or computer. That said, of course, if you don’t wear glasses and / or have a particularly impervious inner ear, I’d bet it would wind up being a much more entertaining way to play first-person shooters and other gaming staples than the ol’ console.

And that’s not to mention the many ways AR games mix the real world and the digital one to create innovative possibilities โ€” or even just the ways that virtual reality could make otherwise-bland video game fodder compelling. A rock climbing game โ€” call it Hold Fast with Alex Honnold, perhaps โ€” would probably be boring as hell on your PC, but it could be absolutely thrilling on the Quest 3.

Samsung’s Curved Monitor Is Made for Gamers, But I Love It for Work

The Odyssey Neo G8 turns out to excel at productivity tasks, too.

a laptop and a monitor on a deskWill Sabel Courtney

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Full disclosure: I am very much not a video game person. Blame my parents: being of a liberal mindset and having grown up in the 1950s and 1960s, the concept itself seemed alien to their ideas of youth, so they took a very hard line against the likes of Sega, Nintendo and Playstation. While other kids were building hand-eye coordination and improving reaction time, I was stuck reading books and playing outside and learning, like some kind of schmuck. My brief tastes of video gaming only came when I went over to a friend’s house, at which point I would immediately be demolished at Goldeneye or MarioKart due to my inexperience.

Products in the Guide

That said, I’ve always had an appreciation for gaming tech, even if only because I usually wound up spending more time staring at the console and graphics when playing after dying 60 seconds into a mission and handing the controls off to someone else. So when I spotted Samsung’s Odyssey OLED G8 monitor for the first time, suffice it to say, I was intrigued.

The Odyssey G8 is meant for gamers: its 175-Hz refresh rate means it can cycle its display ten times for every blink; its OLED screen offers incredible colors, clarity and crispness; and its frankly astounding 0.03-millisecond response time helps players maximize their advantages over their foes. But from my video game-agnostic perspective, this curved monitor’s appeal lies elsewhere. Samsung’s curved monitor, it turns out, is dynamite for the tasks I actually spend most of my day staring at a computer for: work.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

Itโ€™s all about screen real estate, baby

More screen space equals more productivity. Itโ€™s been proven by science โ€” a second screen boosts productivity by a whopping 42 percent โ€” and itโ€™s borne out anecdotally by most of us who’ve ever worked on computers. In a world where it feels like we spend more and more time staring at the little screens of our phones, itโ€™s a luxury to be able to operate on a display capable of showing more than a couple dozen lines of text at a time. The more square footage a screen has, the less shifting between windows you have to do โ€” which means less distraction and more staying on task.

monitor
It’s easy to load two full browser windows, or two separate programs at something close to traditional full-screen size, on the Odyssey G8 at once. Add in your laptop’s built-in screen, and you have almost too much visual real estate.
Will Sabel Courtney

The Odyssey G8’s 3440-by-1440-pixel display stretches 34 inches diagonally, but it’s how that screen space is configured and utilized that makes the differences. Like many curved monitors, it has a more horizontal aspect ratio than more traditional external displays (or your MacBook or iMac, for that matter). This enables the Odyssey to easily show two complete browser windows next to each other in full size โ€” all while seeming less monolithic on your desktop than a similarly sized monitor with a more traditional screen ratio, as the wraparound screen makes it seem more compact. In effect, it’s almost like having dual monitors in a single package.

Perhaps the best proof of this comes not from me, but from my partner. While she’s an avowed believer in Goldilocks-sized screens โ€” she still insists our 65-inch TV is too big for the apartment โ€” she quickly stole adopted the Odyssey out from under me for our home office, and now blasts through her tasks with triple the efficiency of before.

That said, the user interface needs a little work

Unlike the LG 4K monitor I usually use, which is just an external display, full stop, the Odyssey comes loaded up with a similar built-in operating system to one of Samsungโ€™s TVs. Indeed, you can use it as a standalone TV if you want; it even comes with a TV-style remote, so all you’d need to do to watch satellite or cable on there is hook that input up to its micro-HDMI port.

Getting to that point, however, is a bit tricky. In an effort to be helpful, Samsung offers a few ways to mirror your computer’s screen on the Odyssey, including wireless mirroring options and app-based solutions. Thing is, since it’s being projected over a wireless connection and the monitor’s aspect ratio is far different from most laptops’, the projected result comes out looking low-rez and hugged by black bars of empty screen.

Eventually, I was able to suss out how to connect my laptop to the Odyssey via USB-C cord โ€” the story of the different types of USB-C cables that all look the same is a rant for another time โ€” but it was still far more trouble than I’m used to, coming from a world mostly populated by Apple products. And setting up the direct connection required delving into menus that made setting up the timer on my childhood VCR seem simple.

Speaking of those menus: The Odyssey, like many a Samsung product, also comes with a bit of bloatware in the form of assorted freevee channels and apps you’ll probably never use. (You can even play many video games directly through it, should you somehow wind up with a gaming monitor but no computer or console to use with it.) Combine that with the unintuitive controls, and it’s easy to find yourself lost in a maze of menus, or stuck watching content you don’t want to see. More than once, my partner or I (or, in all honesty, our cat) have accidentally pressed a button on the remote and triggered a random FAST channel playing Murder, She Wrote with no clear way to get back to our previous task.Like anyone else, I’m game for a Jessica Fletcher break every now and again โ€” I’m only human โ€” but I prefer to do so on my schedule, not at the whims of my technology.

Pros

  • Ridiculous amount of screen area
  • Elegant design
  • Takes up less space than you might think

Cons

  • Setup, operation can be a little finicky
  • Extra features largely unneeded

Conan O’Brien Interviewed President Biden & Their Omega Seamasters Stole the Show

The pair have more in common than their Irish-American heritage.

Conan O’Brien recently interviewed President Biden in a special edition of his popular podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, and the two ended up having a fair amount in common. The pair bonded over their similar backgrounds, both coming from large, blue-collar, Irish Catholic families in the Northeast โ€” O’Brien grew up in Boston with five siblings, Biden in Pennsylvania and Delaware with three.

Both also share an interest in politics, with Biden of course serving as an elected official for the better part of six decades and O’Brien being something of an amateur presidential historian with a particular affinity for (and knowledge of) Abraham Lincoln. And another thing they have in common but didn’t touch on during the interview? Their taste in watches.

Both men wore Omega Seamasters during the interview. Not only that but both wore models that can be described as “Bond Watches,” with Biden wearing the earliest Omega Bond watch and O’Brien sporting the latest.

a man standing next to a man sitting at a table

On Conan’s wrist was the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition “No Time to Die.” Worn by Daniel Craig in his final Bond outing, the NTTD Seamaster has quickly become a modern classic for Omega. It differs from the standard Seamaster Diver 300M in a number of ways, most notably its titanium case and titanium mesh bracelet, its bubble-domed sapphire crystal, its tropical dial and aluminum bezel, its aged lume and its lack of a date complication. It’s also a pricey number, retailing for $10,000, which is $4,100 more than the standard steel Seamaster Diver.

Biden’s Seamaster is considerably more modest. While we don’t get a full view of it during the interview, we can make out the watch’s distinctly ’90s “tank tread” bracelet peeking out from under the president’s French cuff shirt here and there. The watch is almost certainly the Seamaster Diver 300M ref. 2561.80. This is the 36.25mm midsize version of the quartz-powered “Goldeneye” Seamaster worn by Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in the 1995 film of the same name (Brosnan wore the full-size version of the watch, ref. 2541.80).

Team Coco on YouTube

Biden has worn this watch frequently since at least his days as President Barack Obama’s vice president when it was photographed and identified as a quartz midsize model due to its smaller 3 o’clock marker and its dial showing three lines of text instead of four as on the automatic version. Used examples can readily be found for under $2,000.

While neither have discussed their watch collections publicly, to my knowledge, both men have shown great taste in watches over the years. In addition to his trusty Seamaster, Biden is also known to own an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, a steel Rolex Datejust 41, a Vulcain Cricket, an Apple Watch and an obscure quartz Seiko Chronograph ref. 7T32-6M90 from the ’90s or early 2000s.

Conan has worn his No Time to Die Seamaster for most of the past year, but prior to that he was consistently wearing a Rolex Submariner Date. Throughout his career, he’s been seen wearing everything from a Panerai Radiomir to an IWC Pilot’s Chronograph to an Apple Watch to a customized Rolex Milgauss. I think we’re going to need a sequel episode where these two just chat about watches.

The Most Badass Gravel Bikes for Riding Your Heart Out

Letโ€™s simplify the booming gravel market to help you find the right bike.

men riding gravel bikes on a dirt roadAllied

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Just like a trip down the cereal aisle at Safeway, searching for the right gravel bike can be overwhelmingly complex. Itโ€™s a true paradox of choice โ€” so many options to choose from that youโ€™re liable to give up not long after you start.

As gear testers, we get more notifications about new gravel bikes than skis or puffy jackets, even in the dead of winter. Poke around the interwebs and youโ€™ll see what we mean. But for the uninitiated, the category can be both exciting and a little head-scratching: What exactly is a gravel bike?

Put simply, a gravel bike is a drop-bar style bike that has been engineered to allow you to ride over a variety of surfaces. Gravel bikes are a curious mix between road and off-road and the category runs the gamut from rugged rigs โ€” essentially mountain bikes with drop bars โ€” to modified road bikes with slightly more clearance and tubeless tires.

To help you invest your hard-earned dollars in the right gravel steed, we put together this simplified guide. Below we focus on the important differences and similarities, so you can prioritize and ride away smoothly โ€” even if you do get a little (blissfully) muddy in the process.

Additional contributions by John Zientek and Emily Schaldach.

How We Tested

gravel bikes
Testing gravel bikes in Patagonia, Arizona.
Hayley Helms

The beauty of riding gravel is just how accessible it is. Our team combined trails and bike lanes, road and dirt to form their own unique paths. We tested gravel bikes in races like Unbound Gravel and SBT GRVL, in trail systems across the country, around small towns with tons of gravel and with groups like The Gravel House. Along the way, we tracked geometry, comfort, components, materials and more to determine which exactly are the best gravel bikes on the market. After extensive testing, we landed on our top picks. Editor’s note: Gravel bikes can easily get very pricey, so we made sure to include a few more approachable picks in this guide. One is well under $1,000, two others cost roughly $2,000, and two more cost around $4,000.

Best Overall Gravel Bike: Diverge STR Expert

Pros

  • Smooth ride but still efficient
  • Great range with 12-speed, 11-50t cassette
  • Tracer Pro 2BR tires can handle a wide range of terrain
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Brakes are underwhelming
  • Bottle cage is designed for bumps, not ease of access
  • Can't completely lock out suspension
  • Weight: 21 pounds, 12 ounces
  • Frame: Specialized Diverge FACT 11r carbon frameset with Future Shock 2.0 suspension
  • Wheels and Tires: Roval Terra C wheelset, Tracer Pro 2Bliss Ready tires

STR stands for Suspend the Rider and the Future Shock 2.0 front and rear suspension, paired with the lightweight Diverge FACT 11r carbon frameset, does just that. The technology โ€” initially designed for smooth rides on cobblestones โ€” features 20mm of travel above the head tube in the front and 30mm of travel in the rear. You can’t completely lock out the suspension, but the damping does allow the rider to nearly eliminate bobbing in strenuous sections of rides.

The Tracer Pro 2Bliss Ready tires mounted on a Roval Terra C wheelset aren’t overly aggressive on-road and offer a surprising amount of stability off-road. Along with the tires, the 12-speed, 11-50t SRAM NX Eagle PG-1230 cassette gives all the range you need for the most intense hills. The SRAM ED RIV ETAP shifters are fun, fast and smooth. Sure, there are drawbacks for those coming from road or mountain riding, but in terms of pure versatility, this Swiss Army bike is hard to fault.

Cons

  • Very limited colorways
  • Weight: 17 pounds, 10 ounces
  • Frame: ENVE M.O.D Carbon frame
  • Wheels and Tires: Fits up to a 700c x 50 mm tire

Weโ€™ve never ridden a gravel bike that is so wonderfully optimized for completely different activities. Wanna race the MOG? Best Budget Gravel Bike: State Bicycle Co. 4130 All-Road

Pros

  • Easy on the wallet, with performance to boot

Cons

  • Lacks premium components of more expensive bikes
  • Weight: 28 pounds
  • Frame: 4130 Chromoly Steel frame
  • Wheels and Tires: 650b: Tubeless Capable Wheel Set w/ Vittoria Barzo Tires, 2.1 inch

If youโ€™re a devotee of the less-is-more philosophy, this bike is for you. Simple, affordable and durable, the All-Road is an easy pick for the best bang-for-your-buck bike. A steel frame (the only one on this list), plenty of mounting options, multiple tire size options, and standard disc brakes make it a perfect choice for long tours where there is no rush, a year-round commuter, or just a solid, entry-level bike to get into gravel riding.

Best Gravel Bike for Long Adventures: Canyon Grizl 7 Suspension

Pros

  • Low price point + a quality build

Cons

  • A little on the heavy side
  • Weight: 25 pounds
  • Frame: Aluminum
  • Wheels and Tires: DT Swiss LN aluminium gravel wheels; Schwalbe 45 mm G-One Bite tires

Employing the new RockShox Rudy front fork with 30mm of travel, the Grizl is one of the few gravel bikes that can tackle an all-terrain bikepacking trip without feeling like your teeth are going to fall out. From the ground up this bike is designed for long-haul functionality, highlighted by a large cockpit, comfortable seat, ample mounting points and large tires to smooth out rough roads. At a relatively affordable price point, this bike is excellent for anyone going the distance.

Most Feature-Rich Gravel Bike: Santa Cruz Stigmata Force AXS 1x

Pros

  • Impressively stable
  • Glovebox comes up clutch every time

Cons

  • Not as speedy as the suspension-free editions

  • Weight: 20 pounds, 15 ounces
  • Frame: CC Carbon frame
  • Wheels and Tires: 700c wheels with 45c Maxxis Rambler tires

The priciest trim level of the five stock Stigmatas is absolutely loaded. Standout elements include SRAM Force XPLR AXS 1×12 electronic shifting, a RockShox Rudy Ultimate XPLR suspension fork with 40mm of travel, a RockShox Reverb AXS XPLR electronic dropper post, 700x45c Maxxis Rambler tires and a downtube storage space called the Glovebox. It all adds up to an impressively stable, user-friendly platform that shifts smoothly, climbs capably and crushes technical descents like a champ. When you take a break to celebrate your utter gnarliness, pop open that Glovebox to pull out tools to make repairs, snacks to share and/or a warm-ifying extra layer.

While the vast array of features may be more than some need, the Stigmata wonโ€™t weigh you down โ€” without pedals or other accessories, our review unit was just under 21 pounds โ€” making it the perfect party bike for shredding gravel and leaving pesky worries in your rockstrewn wake.

Lowest-Maintenance Gravel Bike: Priority Apollo

Pros

  • Carbon belt drive minimizes maintenance needs

Cons

  • Bikes are often sold out
  • Weight: 24 pounds
  • Frame: Ultralight 6061 T6 Aluminum
  • Wheels and Tires: WTB i23 ST Tubeless Ready; Tubeless-ready WTB or Goodyear 40mm gravel tires

From the moment we started pedaling this bike, it inspired confidence. The frame feels incredibly well-built and stable, with a geometry that feels comfortable when cruising on the road but simultaneously hungry for rocks and dirt, thanks to 440mm drop bars with a 12-degree flare and 90mm reach. Once we reached that sort of terrain, we were impressed by how smooth the shifting was. Just a little tap of the levers on the right handlebar enabled seamless transitions thanks to the internally hubbed Alfine 11 system.

For the price you get a hell of a lot here, and thatโ€™s before we get to the big reason it claims the lowest-maintenance superlative. Like all Priority bikes, the Apollo boasts a Gates Carbon Belt Drive, which spares you the pain of ever having to lube a chain or adjust a derailleur or worry about rain or mud or dust or rocks interfering with your drive train. That means more time riding your bike, less time fixing it โ€” or hiking out of the woods when your chain breaks.

Smoothest Downhilling Gravel Bike: Cannondale Topstone Carbon 2 Lefty

Pros

  • Front and back suspension elevates ride

Cons

  • Not as comfortable on-road
  • Weight: 23.31 pounds
  • Frame: BallisTec carbon frame with Kingpin suspension
  • Wheels and Tires: WTB ST i23 TCS, 28h, tubeless ready; WTB Venture TCS Light, 650 x 47c

We all knew that gravel bikes would have dual suspension eventually. It just makes sense if you want to ride more trails more aggressively. The Topstone was the first to solve this riddle and in my opinion, remains the smoothest downhill gravel bike out there. Sure, it sacrifices speed and weight, but 30mm of travel in the rear Kingpin suspension and 30mm in the Lefty Oliver front fork enable an entirely different ride from the rest of the bikes on this list.

In testing this bike, we ripped up big road climbs, hopped over logs, rode through creeks and rallied down sketchy dirt roads, jumping on little lips and maintaining unprecedented traction in the bumpy corners. The engineers grinned as we told them again, โ€œDamn, this thing really does absolutely rip.โ€ For riders looking for a hidden gem in the world of gravel that can match their stoke on every ride, the Topstone Carbon 2 Lefty could be the answer.

Best Made-in-USA Gravel Bike: Allied Able Force AXS

Pros

  • Nimble and aggressive

Cons

  • Base price is high, without add-ons
  • Weight: ~18 pounds
  • Build: ABLE – SRAM Force AXS 1×12 Build Group
  • Wheels and Tires: Industry Nine UL250 CX 700 Wheelset – XDR; WTB Resolute 700×42 TCS 120tpi SG2

Thanks to an innovative drive-side chainstay design, the Able offers something that few other gravel brands can: an aggressive geometry with large tires. The Able is a nimble, agile and incredibly fast bike that still allows a variety of tire sizes for various roads and conditions. Want proof? The bike made its debut in 2019 at one of the world’s gnarliest races โ€” Unbound Gravel in Emporia, Kansas โ€” as the ride of choice for both the male and female winners. One downside of the design is that it can only accommodate a one-by drivetrain (a set-up we favor anyway). The upside is a responsive and snappy ride, great on hardpack, fire roads and rough gravel adventures.

Best-Looking Gravel Bike: BMC Kaius 01 TWO

Pros

  • Fun to look at and to ride

Cons

  • If you're on the fence, the price tag is high

  • Weight: 18 pounds, 2 ounces
  • Frame: Kaius 01 Premium Carbon with Aerocore Design
  • Wheels and Tires: ZIPP 303 S Wheelset, Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H – 40mm

Look, there is no doubt that this Swiss-built beauty could make a helluva case for โ€œbest racing gravel bike.โ€ That is the Kaius lineโ€™s stated intent, and with precise SRAM FORCE eTap AXS wireless electronic shifting, a lively 2×12 drivetrain, race-inspired geometry and a weight barely over 18 pounds, the TWO will get you to the finish line fast. But the Bicycle Manufacturing Company also happened to make sure youโ€™ll look good doing so.

This particular trim level, with a bold turquoise main hue complemented by a pop of white and orange, first scored points when we realized how much easier it is to photograph in the woods than a lot of other gravel bikes weโ€™ve tested. But it really won us over when people started asking if it had been custom-painted. Considering the price tag, it might as well be.

Best Dirt/Tarmac Split: Scott Addict Gravel

Pros

  • Great on streets as well as trails

Cons

  • Not available for purchase online/ have to find a dealer
  • Weight: 20.28 pounds
  • Frame: Addict Gravel Disc HMF Carbon
  • Wheels and Tires: Syncros RP2.0 Disc; Schwalbe G-ONE Bite Performance

Part of the road bike lineage at Scott, the Addict Gravel is based on a road frame intended for riders who spend as much time on pavement as they do on gravel. The burly carbon build boasts a number of clever features that make the Addict at home off-road, including more mounting points, clearance for 45mm tires, larger brake rotors and the option for a one-by or two-by drivetrain. And yet, the bike leans into its aero frame, internal cable routing and tighter cockpit to help maintain its performance when you hit the streets.

Best E-Gravel Bike: Cervรฉlo Rouvida Force XPLR AXS 1

a white and black bicycleCervelo

Cervรฉlo Rouvida Force XPLR AXS 1

Pros

  • Climbing ability is super impressive

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Weight: ~31 pounds
  • Frame: Rouvida Carbon
  • Wheels and Tires: Fulcrum Racing 600 DB, Corsa N.EXT TLR G2.0 700x30c

Cervรฉlo took its sweet time entering the e-bike space. But when the racing-renowned Canadian brand finally did launch the Rouvida earlier this month โ€ฆ wow. We got a chance to rip around on the pricier of the two gravel editions (there are also two roadies) and were blown away. The streamlined carbon frame houses a Fazua Ride60 motor with a 432wH battery that promises 60nM of torque and assists up to 28 miles per hour. But what really makes it sing are Cervรฉloโ€™s performance-driven touches โ€” vertically orienting the battery to save 25g in the wind tunnel, clever controls and silky-smooth electronic shifting.

As fast as we flew on NYC streets, flat stretches of gravel and epic downhills, what most impressed was the Rouvidaโ€™s climbing ability. With pedals, our tester weighed just under 31 pounds, and with three pedal-assist levels, we were able to ascend 4,500 feet in an afternoon while barely breaking a sweat. While weโ€™ve been known to relish the satisfaction of surmounting a punishing hill, that was pretty damn fun โ€” and would make this bike perfect if your riding partner is significantly younger, fitter or crazier than you are.

Most Conversation-Starting Gravel Bike: Evil Chamois Hagar Force AXS

Pros

  • Incredibly versatile, reliable and tough
  • Murdered-out colorway heightens the badassery

Cons

  • Hardcore road cyclists find its very existenceโ€ฆ upsetting
  • Not the fastest dog in the pack
  • Weight: 20 pounds
  • Frame: Evil Chamois Hagar UD Carbon Frame with Internal Routing
  • Wheels and Tires: WTB Proterra Light i23 Tubeless

What exactly is this thing, and why does it exist? Shake off such questions from hard-core roadies while pedaling this semi-controversial set of wheels. All that matters is that the hilariously named Chamois Hagar is an absolute blast. With a geometry thatโ€™s clearly reverse engineered from a mountain bike โ€” true to Evilโ€™s pedigree as an MTB brand โ€” it can really shred, both on and off-road.

On actual gravel, the lightweight carbon frame, giant 42-tooth granny gear, fat 50c tires and stock dropper post take the pain out of technical climbs and makes gnarly descents more manageable. But this bike also kicks ass on the streets of NYC โ€” hopping curbs and crushing potholes with reckless abandon. We even rolled 300 miles from New York to DC and somehow finished with both high spirits and fully functional quads. Bottom line: forget the controversy and enjoy the ride.

Best Racing Gravel Bike: Pinarello Grevil F Ekar

Pros

  • Wavy frame is an instant conversation piece
  • Just so goddamnโ€ฆ fast

Cons

  • Not exactly a daily driver
  • Like with an Italian car, repairs can add up
  • Weight: 19 pounds, 8 ounces
  • Frame: Toray T700 UD carbon
  • Wheels and Tires: Fulcrum Rapid Red wheels; Maxxis Rambler tires

Part sport ute, part sports car, the Grevil boasts aero geometry, an ultralight carbon frame, fully integrated cables, a 13-speed Campagnolo Ekar groupset and a unique shifting mechanism, all of which presage its penchant for promptitude. That figures: Pinarello riders have won a record 16 Tours de France, and the brandโ€™s premiere road racing bike, the Dogma, is the basis for its premiere gravel racing bike.

Once you get a feel for its aggressive posture, the Grevil delivers. We know from experience, as itโ€™s the bike we rode, much more smoothly than expected, in last yearโ€™s SBT GRVL. Yes, it can be a little high maintenance โ€” we had to take it to the shop more than once with brake issues โ€” but if you have a little patience with this Italian off-road machine, it will quickly become your new favorite race bike.

The Next-Generation Apple CarPlay: What You Need to Know

Apple is coming for your climate controls and speedometer.

next generation apple carplay dashboard shown across multiple screensApple

Apple first released CarPlay back in 2014, to significant acclaim. The technology allowed drivers to mirror their iPhone onto the car’s infotainment screen, enabling use of many programs without having to touch or look at your own personal phone. Having CarPlay has made it far easier (and safer) to play audio content, use navigation software and perform other tasks (you can even order Dominos through it) from the phone while driving.

As a result, CarPlay has become so popular, it’s now available in nearly every new car for sale in America (though General Motors is abandoning it). That said, screens have evolved in cars over the past 10 years. Now, Apple’s next-generation of CarPlay is evolving to meet them.

Here’s what you need to know about next-gen Apple CarPlay.

What’s new about next-generation Apple CarPlay?

The current edition of CarPlay projects phone functions onto the infotainment screen. Next-generation CarPlay won’t be confined to the infotainment screen, and it will be able to control vehicle functions.

CarPlay will be able to take over the digital instrument cluster and display relevant vehicle data through customizable widgets and themes. CarPlay will also be able to control the vehicle’s climate system, so you won’t have to leave the ecosystem to do so in vehicles without physical buttons.

apple carplay shown on screen from live eventEric Yang

When will the next-generation Apple CarPlay arrive?

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but CAR magazine in Britain reports that the new CarPlay will debut in 2024.

Porsche and Aston Martin vehicles will get it first. Both brands offered previews of what their next-gen CarPlay displays will look like in shadowy concept images that dropped towards the end of 2023; Aston’s picture appears to show it in a DB12-like cockpit, while Porsche’s layout appears to display the new setup in a hypothetical model with a larger center screen than the current Cayenne or future Macan EV. (Still, if we had to guess, we’d hypothesize that the new system might first show up in Porsche’s future electric crossover.)

The most obvious change to the system is the integration of CarPlay into the instrument panel, where each brand has customized the look to align with the brand’s image and preferences. The (clearly electric) Porsche has a trio of round gauges: central power gauge and digital speedo, with an “analog” speedometer to the left and a driving data pod to the right. The Aston, meanwhile, has more traditional dual circular gauges โ€” speedo on the left, tach on the right โ€” with a secondary info display in the center.

That customization, however, also further extends to the secondary displays. The central and passenger-side displays of the Porsche one, for example, use a checkered backdrop much like you would have seen on the seats or dash of Porsches of yore.

Which cars will offer next-generation Apple CarPlay?

Apple has not announced which brands will get it besides Porsche and Aston Martin, at least to begin. During the initial launch, however, Apple displayed a graphic with the brands collaborating on next-gen CarPlay. Those brands included Ford/Lincoln, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo/Polestar, Mercedes-Benz, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, Porsche and Audi. As such, we’d expect all of them to begin using CarPlay 2.0 within the next couple years.

apple carplay instrument display shown on large screen from live eventEric Yang

Ford CEO Jim Farley recently committed the company to offering Apple CarPlay in the future, which would presumably include the next-generation integration.

Does this mean the Apple Car is coming soon?

Short answer: not really. Apple is, by all accounts, pursuing Project Titan โ€” also known as “the Apple Car” โ€” in a serious manner. Such a car will no doubt contain a similar holistic setup with iOS integration that can control the car’s functions. But that’s the easy part.

Apple needs to develop self-driving technology โ€” that’s the potential value add that would make the Apple Car matter. That technology may still be years away from existing, let alone being regulated and production-ready. Apple also needs to design a car, develop it and set up a manufacturing process to assemble it.

One Apple analyst has the Apple Car arriving sometime between 2025 and 2027 at the earliest โ€” and that’s in an optimistic scenario. It could be much later.

All the Best New Bourbon and Other Whiskey Releases of 2023

Keep up with the brown stuff with this guide to the past year’s new spirits.

You probably already have your go-to whiskey in your bar cart โ€” whether it’s a bourbon, Scotch, rye or something else. But it’s always good to mix things up once in a while by trying something new, and the spirits world offers no shortage of new whiskeys every week to tantalize your tastebuds.

We updated this post continuously throughout 2023 to bring you the best new whiskeys released each week, and now that the year is coming to a close, we have a pretty stellar collection of liquor that made its way from distillery to glass (and much of it into our mouths) this year. So have a look below and see which new whiskeys you might have missed in 2023.

December

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Selection #12

Jack Daniel’s has gone wild with experimentation all year. From releasing its first-ever single malt to its oldest age-statement whiskey ever to the Distillery Series that sees unique cask finishes applied to ol’ No. 7. For this twelfth installment, the Tennessee whiskey was finished off in Oloroso sherry casks for three years after reaching its normal maturity, and then bottled at 90 proof. Having tried a sample, I can say this stuff tastes appropriately seasonal for December. It’s like a Jack Daniel’s fruitcake, with dried fruit and warm baking spice linking up with the classic flavor of JD. If you’re in Tennessee, be sure and pick up a bottle, because that’s the only place you’ll find it (at retail, anyway).

Bushmills Private Reserve

Bushmills wowed me earlier this year with its 25- and 30-year single malts, and now the Irish distillery is bringing the heat again in a much more affordable and attainable form (but nearly as special). The initial installment in a new limited series for the brand, Bushmills’ Private Reserve consists of a quartet of single malts โ€” three 10-year-olds and a 12-year-old โ€” that have each undergone a different cask finish. The 12 ended its maturation process in tequila casks, while the three younger whiskeys spent time in plum brandy, Bordeaux and Burgundy casks, respectively. The best part, though, may be the price, with the 10-years each retailing for just $60 and the 12-year for $75.

a bottle and box of whiskeyReserve Bar

Teeling Very Rare Casks 33-Year-Old

Speaking of rare and special Irish whiskeys … Teeling has released a 33-year-old single malt from its Very Rare Casks series. Fans of the brand know they’re no stranger to high age statements, having previously released 38-, 34- and 33-year-old whiskeys (a different one) in previous years. But that doesn’t make this one any less special. The single-cask whiskey spent 30 years in spent bourbon casks before being finished off in casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes, a sherry-like aperitif from France. Tasting notes for the single malt include apricot, pineapple, and toasted almonds with clove spice, according to Teeling.

Whistlepig PiggyBank RyeWhistle Pig

WhistlePig PiggyBank Rye

The pig is back. After its blockbuster debut last year, WhistlePig’s 10-year-old rye in the horizontal porcine bottle that opens from the rear is back for round two. Inside is the same 110-proof liquid as last year’s release, but this time around the launch took place on Giving Tuesday to celebrate a year of charitable giving from the distillery. The whiskey features a hint of truffle on the nose, which is quite fitting for its vessel.

a bottle of alcohol whiskey TaliskerTotal Wine

Talisker 45 Year Old Glacial Edge

I was very impressed with Talisker’s 30-year-old single malt Scotch that launched earlier this year, but I definitely didn’t expect the Isle of Skye distillery to launch an expression that’s 50 percent older just a few months later. But the extreme aging is just part of the story. Talisker took a dozen of its charred barrels to Canada’s ice fields, where they were left exposed to the brutal elements for four days. The whiskey was then finished in these cold-fractured barrels back in Scotland, where the liquid interacted with a greater surface area of the wood due to the fracturing. Talisker partnered with Parley for the Oceans, and a portion of each $5,460 bottle sold will be donated to the environmental nonprofit.

Crown Royal aged whiskey bottleDrizly

Crown Royal 30 Year Old

Confession time: My parents used to buy Crown Royal while I was growing up as sort of a “special occasion” whisky, and then reuse the purple velvet bags to store various things around the house. Today, standard Crown Royal isn’t considered all that fancy (it probably never was tbh) and can be found everywhere for under 25 bucks. But this 30-year-old expression is a different beast. The oldest-ever expression released by the brand, and one of the oldest North American spirits we’ve ever seen. The blended whisky was distilled in a Coffey still, another extreme rarity in this part of the world, before aging for three decades at Crown Royal’s distillery. Even at $500 SRP, it’s a steal for this kind of rarity (even if it doesn’t come with a purple velvet bag).

Deanston Virgin Oak Cask Strength

If you’re a fan of Deanston’s Virgin Oak but wished it had a little more bite, then this is your lucky month. The Stirlingshire-based distillery has released the first-ever cask-strength version of the popular Highland single malt, going into the bottle at 58.5% ABV (117 proof). According to the brand, the boosted strength allows for a bold showcase of Deanston’s “waxy” character and house style. “The waxy character is present and coats the mouth beautifully,” says master blender Julieann Fernandez.

Bruichladdich Black Art 11

If you thought the tenth edition of Bruichladdich’s Black Art was good, well, this one goes to 11. Transparency is big among spirits enthusiasts today, especially at Bruichladdich, which typically gives the complete recipe, cask type, specific barley varietal and provenance for its bottles. But not so with the Black Art. This whisky’s details are kept close to the vest, adding to the fun. There are a few things we know, however: It’s aged for 24 years, non-chill filtered and bottled at 44.2% ABV. I sampled the whisky and found it to be robust, smooth and spicy, with black pepper, cinnamon and caramel being the dominant tasting notes complemented by delicate whisps of smoke.

Westward Whiskey Milestone

Westward Whiskey, one of the most important trailblazers of the modern American single malt movement, has now entered the luxury whiskey space with its first high-end release. But the $250 bottle isn’t some money grab โ€” it represents the natural evolution of the brand’s continuing quest to elevate American single malt. “We challenged ourselves to explore what the ultimate expression of Westward Whiskey could be. Milestone is our masterpiece โ€” a truly special whiskey that celebrates the legacy of our past and the promise of our future,” said founder and CEO Thomas Mooney. Milestone is set to be an annual release from the distillery and is only available on its website and in its home state of Oregon.

Old Overholt 10 Year Cask Strength Straight Rye Whiskey

Old Overholt has always had its fans โ€” typically those who enjoy getting a decent, easy-drinking rye whiskey for around 20 bucks. But now the brand is looking to put a little more respect on its name with this more premium offering. Aged for ten years and bottled at a cask strength of 121 proof, it’s the first cask-strength whiskey from the brand since the mid-twentieth century. The whiskey was also aged in one of the nation’s only “escalator warehouses,” which the brand says results in a more consistent and mellow product. Priced at $100, this is unlike any Old Overholt Rye anyone’s had in over half a century.

In 2019, Heaven’s Door โ€” the bourbon brand founded by Bob Dylan with help from Angel’s Envy founder Marc Bushala and Ryan Perry, formerly of Diageo โ€” launched its annual Bootleg Series of rare and exquisite releases. Five years have flown by and we’re now on the fifth volume of the Bootleg Series. The new installment is an 18-year-old straight bourbon that’s been finished in Spanish vermouth rouge casks and bottled at 114 proof. The ceramic bottle is special, too, as it features a print of Dylan’s own original painting “No Vacancies” from 2019.

The juice itself is a unique blend of American single malt whiskey and a high-rye bourbon, resulting in a whiskey that’s equal parts spicy and smooth with notes of caramel, citrus and baking spice.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a mashup of Japanese whisky and single malt Scotch, and it won’t be the last, but that doesn’t make it any less notable. Glenmorangie’s director of whisky creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden, aged some of the Highland distillery’s classic single malt in rare Mizunara oak casks, the darling of the Japanese whisky world, along with spent bourbon and sherry casks to create a unique limited edition with spectacular original bottle artwork by Japanese artist Yamaguchi Akira.

The two high-proof whiskeys are the first releases from new master distiller Owen Martin, who is clearly starting off his tenure with a bang. The rye is a blend of two whiskeys finished in sauternes casks and toasted oak barrels, respectively, and clocks in at 114.4 proof. The bourbon, the 12th such cask strength release from Angel’s Envy, tips the scales at 118.2 proof.

When you hear “Dewar’s” you no doubt think of cheap blended Scotch, like the brand’s ubiquitous white label that can be found everywhere for around 20 bucks. This whisky is not that. In fact, it’s about as far from typical Dewar’s as you can get. Dewar’s oldest expression ever, Double Double 37 is a 37-year-old blended malt made from several fine Speyside single malts that comes with a set of Baccarat crystal glassware and retails for $1,799 … or roughly 90 bottles of White Label.

Ardbeg Anamorphic

When Ardbeg gets experimental, good things happen, and the creative distillery has put on its lab coat once again for its latest release. Anamorphic is the result of some intense charring experimentation, where Ardbeg removed the heads from its bourbon casks, heavily scored them to expose more wood and then charred them to an ultra-dark โ€˜high mochaโ€™ level before filling them with Scotch. The result is a single malt that “morphs” on the palate between sweet, smoky, herbal and spicy notes.

As expected, this straight Kentucky bourbon has undergone three different finishes: one in brandy casks, one in Sonoma County pinot noir barrels and one in bourbon casks that had previously been used to age red wine. All the grapey goodness translates to a bourbon that’s fruitier and richer than your typical bottle of Woodford Reserve.

Sometimes, the old ways are best, and Benriach believes this mantra applies to floor malting, the centuries-old process of hand-malting barley that’s been spread out like a mat on a floor. Just a handful of distilleries still malt their barley this way, and Benriach does so for its special Malting Season release, now in its Third Edition. The finish lingers practically forever, reminding you that this is no ordinary hooch.

The hand-blended five-year is just available in small batches to start and is currently up for pre-order.

The Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12

Glendronach’s Cask Strength batches are always a big deal to a certain subset of Scotch collectors, and now the Highland distillery is at it again with its Cask Strength Batch 12. The spirit shows off the distillery’s famed mastery of sherry maturation, having spent time aging in both Pedro Ximรฉnez and Oloroso sherry casks. The deep amber color is all naturally derived from those casks, and the 58.2 percent ABV Scotch has surprisingly dessert-like notes of raisin cake, chocolate tiramisu and crรจme brรปlรฉe.

Fuji Japanese Whisky

Japanese distillery Fuji has released a new blend strictly for the American market and sporting the decidedly simple name of “Fuji Japanese Whisky.” That basic moniker hides the fact that this whiskey is actually a new category unto itself, Single Blended Japanese Whisky. This whiskey combines bourbon-style, Canadian-style and Scotch-style whiskeys, all distilled and blended at Fuji’s facility in the shadow of Mt. Fuji and using the mountain’s snowmelt in its production. If you’re into blended whiskeys, this unique bottle is a must-try.

The Macallan Home Collection, The Distillery

You know a whiskey brand is on another level when it releases a bottle honoring its own distillery, and that’s exactly what The Macallan has done with Home Collection, The Distillery. Driving home that connection to home is a watercolor on the packaging created by artist Colin Rizza, who has worked at the distillery for decades. As for the whiskey itself, it’s a deep gold-colored 87-proof single-malt Scotch that’s laced with notes of butterscotch, ginger and oak.

Makerโ€™s Mark Wood Finishing Series 2023 Release: BEP

Since 2019, Maker’s Mark’s Wood Finishing Series has put out annual releases, with each one honing in on a signature aspect of the brand’s signature wheated bourbon. For 2023, the release is BEP, which amplifies Maker’s Mark’s barrel-entry proof of 110 (most other bourbon brands head into the barrel at 125 proof). Going in at that lower proof means softer tannins and more balanced wood sugars. This limited-edition blend was finished in ten virgin-toasted American oak staves to amplify those features further. So if you like regular ol’ Maker’s Mark, you ought to love this.

WhistlePig Bespoke Old World Rye, Aged 12 Years

WhistlePig already has a 12-year Old World Rye in its permanent collection. That bottle is a blend of three 12-year-old ryes finished in three different wine casks: 63 percent of the bottle is finished in Madeira casks, 30 percent in Sauternes casks and 7 percent in port casks. For the Bespoke edition, those ratios are altered to 40 percent each for Madeira and Sauternes, and 20 percent port. The altered blend makes for an even richer version of the already luxurious 86-proof rye with notes of berries, cinnamon pastry and confectioner’s sugar. It’s only available to members of the Black Bourbon Society and was custom-blended by their VP of brand partnerships, Trey Wade.

Jefferson's Bourbon Marian McLainCourtesy

Jefferson’s Bourbon Marian McLain

Marian McLain was one of the earliest known women involved in American whiskey production โ€” she was arrested for moonshining and bootlegging in 1799. She is also the eighth-generation grandmother of Jefferson’s Bourbon founder Trey Zoeller, who launched this new blend in her honor. The impressive and complex hooch is a blend of five whiskeys: a 14-year-old Tennessee bourbon, an 11-year-old Kentucky bourbon, an 8-year-old Kentucky bourbon, a wheated double-barrel bourbon and a rum cask-finished bourbon. The limited-edition hooch then is bottled at 102 proof.

Booker’s Bourbon Bookerโ€™s Batch 2023-01: โ€œCharlieโ€™s Batch”

Booker’s first batch of the year is named in honor of craftsman Charlie Hutchens, the man behind the wooden boxes in which Booker’s bottles are sold. And the uncut and unfiltered batch of bourbon looks to do Charlie proud, as it’s aged for 7 years, 1 month and 8 days (yes, for real) with a hefty proof of 126.6. Despite the high burn rate, Booker’s says the whiskey is best enjoyed neat, as it has a “slightly warm taste and a pleasant finish.”

Old Charter Oak Spanish Oak

Among the Buffalo Trace Distillery’s family of brands โ€” which includes acclaimed favorites like Blanton’s, E.H. Taylor, Jr. and, of course, Pappy Van Winkle โ€” Old Charter Oak doesn’t usually get a ton of attention. But the bourbon brand’s identity is certainly an interesting one, as it exists to celebrate the role oak plays in whiskey production. It does this by sourcing oak casks worldwide for its maturation process. Its latest expression uses Spanish oak, a wood typically used to age sherry. It imparts nuttier, drier and spicier notes than the American oak most often used to age bourbon.

RD1 Spirits 110-proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished with Brazilian Amburana Wood

Exotic cask finishes are all the rage in the world of whiskey, with Japanese woods โ€” most notably Mizunara oak โ€” tending to hog most of the spotlight. But for its latest bourbon, RD1 Spirits turned to South America and Amburana โ€” also known as “Brazilian oak.” The material is frequently used to age the rum-like spirit Cachaรงa and craft high-end furniture. When put to use finishing this 55-percent-ABV bourbon, the stuff lends loads of spice and sweet flavor reminiscent of spice cake and gingersnaps.

Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura 29 Year Old

Speaking of Japanese cask finishes… Glenfiddich looked at tired ‘ol Mizunara and decided it needed something even more special to finish off its 29-year-old single malt. So for the first time in history, a Scotch whiskey was finished in Awamori casks. These oak casks are extremely rare and are used to age Awamori โ€” the oldest distilled spirit in Japan, made from rice in a 500-year-old tradition. The combination of flavors is said to be unlike anything else and is priced accordingly โ€” $1,999 for a bottle at MSRP if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one.

Royal Salute The CoronationReserve Bar

Royal Salute The Coronation of King Charles III Edition Scotch

If Glenfiddich’s latest effort isn’t high-end enough for you (if not, you are playing in a vastly different sandbox than the rest of us), then Royal Salute’s highly-exclusive new bottle may be more your speed. Created in honor of the coronation of King Charles III, hence the name of the whiskey, this blended Scotch โ€” yep, blended Scotch can be high-end, too โ€” combines over 53 rare malt and grain whiskies inside a Dartington Crystal decanter. Royal Salute’s entire reason for existence is the British Monarchy โ€” its first-ever blend was released in 1953 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s rise to the crown โ€” so this new release is hardly a surprise. However, it’s still a bit shocking given the, ahem, $25,000 price tag. Just 500 bottles are being released worldwide, with 56 destined for the US. Pre-orders are open now if you’re feelin’ fancy.

Jack Daniel’s 12-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey

Jack is getting older. With its new 12-year-old whiskey, JD has released its oldest age-statement bottle in over a century. The Lynchburg distillery revived age statements on its whiskey last year for the first time since the early 1900s with its 10-year-old, and now it’s following it up with the 12-year and Batch 2 of the 10-year. The new JD dozen-year is bottled at 107 proof with tasting notes of tobacco, oak and butterscotch.

The Glen Grant is also hawking older liquids this month. The Speyside distillery has added to its permanent range with a new 21-year-old Scotch โ€” beating out the previous oldest member of its principal collection by three years. The single malt boasts an array of sweet and tropical notes, from stone fruit on the nose to coconut on the palate to a crรจme brรปlรฉe finish.

Boondocks 18-Year-Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey

High age statements aren’t just for Scotch, as Boondocks proves. The distillery’s 18-year-old bourbon is a cask-strength expression bottled at 52.7 percent ABV and has a complex flavor profile of Tahitian vanilla, butterscotch, dark roasted coffee and various fruits. Snagging a bottle may prove difficult, though, as this is a limited release of just 1,620 bottles.

This latest installment is a 7-year-old rye blended from 28 of the group’s finest barrels. Bottled at 105.12 proof and with 95 percent rye in the mash bill, the Vertical Series Rye has tasting notes that include chocolate, root beer and cardamom.

Woodford Reserve Historic Barrel EntryCourtesy

Woodford Reserve Historic Barrel Entry

For the 18th edition of Woodford Reserve’s coveted Master’s Collection, the distillery went back in time โ€” way back. In the 19th century, it was common for bourbon to go into the barrel at a proof of around 100, while these days it typically starts its maturation around 125 proof, with the idea being that a higher proof at entry results in a less watered-down whiskey. But it turns out that a lot of the flavors that are extracted from the barrel are more soluble in water than in alcohol, meaning a lower entry proof will actually extract richer flavors from the “red layer” of the charred oak where these elusive flavors reside. This old-school technique was used for Woodford Reserve’s Historic Barrel Entry, which went into the barrel at 100 proof and emerged at 90.4 proof and full of sweet and rich flavor.

Stillhouse Peanut Butter S’Mores WhiskeyCourtesy

Stillhouse Peanut Butter Sโ€™Mores Whiskey

Stillhouse is one of the funnest whiskey brands around thanks to their combo of rugged steel bottles that beg to be taken outdoors and flavor infusions that actually taste good without being cloyingly sweet. Their latest is Peanut Butter S’Mores, a 70-proof combination of peanut butter and marshmallow that begs to be passed around a campfire. Having tried it, I can confirm that it is indeed tasty โ€” full of mouthwatering flavor, but not too sweet โ€” and immediately puts one in the mood for crunchy leaves, cool temps and good times.

Tattersall Interstate American Single Malt WhiskeyCourtesy

Tattersall Interstate American Single Malt Whiskey

American single-malt whiskey is a fairly new but rapidly growing category, and now Tattersall Distilling has entered the fray with their first spirit in the style. Interstate is a four-year-old American single-malt whiskey bottled at 80 proof and is meant to be a tribute to the nation’s first interstate park โ€” the aptly named Interstate Park. The park straddles Minnesota and Wisconsin, and those two states also played a role in the making of this whiskey. The grains were sourced from Wisconsin, maturation took place in both states and the whiskey was finished and bottled at Tattersall in Minnesota. The resulting hooch is said to be complex with notes of coffee, chocolate and cherry.

Barrell Bourbon Batch 034Courtesy

Barrell Bourbon Batch 034

Barrell Bourbon’s latest Batch edition is a cask-strength blend of straight bourbons aged 6, 8, 10 and 15 years, respectively. Bottled at 114.62 proof, this reddish-copper liquid boasts quite the array of tasting notes, according to the distillery, from eggnog on the nose to grape soda and cinnamon donuts on the palate to a finish starring shiso and peanut butter cups. It sounds pretty wild, but given the acclaim garnered by Barrell’s previous Bourbon Batches, I’m inclined to believe this one’s a stunner, too.

Bluebird Days Straight American WhiskeyCourtesy

Bluebird Days Straight American Whiskey

Pennsylvania’s Bluebird Distilling has teamed up with country music star Jordan Davis on a new whiskey that celebrates their shared love of “bluebird days” โ€” a term used by skiers to refer to sunny, cloudless days following a snowstorm, and the title of Davis’s latest album. The pair set out to create an easy-sipping whiskey for such days, and the result is a 6.5-year-old blend of the best barrels of four-grain bourbon and American wheat whiskey from the distillery’s stocks. Bottled at 86 proof, the sweet sipper has traditional bourbon tasting notes of sweet corn, vanilla and toffee.

Garrison Brothers Guadalupe 2023Caskers

Garrison Brothers Guadalupe 2023

Texas-based Garrison Brothers’ annual Guadalupe release is always a favorite, and 2023 definitely looks to continue that tradition. The premium bourbon is again finished in its trademark port casks, resulting in some seriously sweet tasting notes. The southern distillery classifies it as a “dessert bourbon” to be paired with chocolates and other treats, with tasting notes of lavender honey and strawberry-buttered biscuits. This straight bourbon is bottled at 107 proof and is limited to 16,098 bottles.

The Glenturret ProwessCourtesy

The Glenturret Prowess

If you’re in search of a whiskey that’s a bit more … luxurious … then say hello to The Glenturret’s latest bottle. The 260-year-old Highland distillery is in the midst of a three-bottle partnership with French crystal maker Lalique, and Prowess is the second entry in the collaborative Trilogy Series. The Scotch was put together by Master Blender Bob Dalgarno using just three casks from Glenturret, with an age statement of 33 years old. The 87.8-proof whiskey is bottled in a custom crystal decanter from Lalique, and just 320 are being produced. If you pony up the $14,000+ required to purchase one, you can expect robust tasting notes of wood, spices and other aromatics.

Watershed RyeCourtesy

Watershed Rye

Ohio-based Watershed Distillery isn’t one to be pigeon-holed. While probably best known for their award-winning bourbon, the brand also churns out gin, vodka and other spirits. But they’ve never made a rye whiskey … until now, that is. Watershed’s first-ever rye whiskey is aged six years in charred oak barrels with a mashbill that’s 57 percent rye, 36 percent corn and 7 percent barley. In other words, this is just a lightly-spiced rye, so if you’re into Watershed’s bourbon, you’ll probably dig this too. Bottled at a hefty 122.8 proof, the first 125 bottles were gobbled up via a lottery, but don’t worry โ€” more will be on the way soon as the rye eventually makes its way into Watershed’s permanent catalog.

Suntory World Whisky AoCourtesy

Suntory World Whisky Ao

OK, slight disclaimer here. Suntory’s World Whiskey Ao isn’t exactly new. In fact, we covered its initial release back in 2019. But what is new is now, in 2023, the unique “global whiskey” is finally being offered for sale in the United States. Hailing from the world’s most famous Japanese whiskey distillery, Ao is actually a blend of whiskeys from the world’s five most significant whiskey-producing countries โ€” Scotland, Ireland, the US, Canada and of course, Japan โ€” making it unlike anything else you’ve likely tasted. Bottled at 86 proof, you should finally be able to find this well-traveled tipple at a store near you.

For this expression, both Pedro Ximรฉnez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucรญa were used, and the resulting spirit sports tasting notes of spiced bramble wine, chocolate raisin and maraschino cherry, among others. Itโ€™s bottled at cask strength, 119.6 proof, and retails for $100 per bottle.

Duncan Taylor Macallan 52-Year-Old

Every once in a while, we come across a bottle of whiskey that, were we to try it, would qualify as a life-altering experience. Without hyperbole, this is one such bottle. Released by ultra-rare spirits purveyor Duncan Taylor from its โ€œRarest Collectionโ€ vault, this 52-year-old Macallan scotch began stewing in its juices at the Duncan Taylor estate back when the Beatles were still together. Now, itโ€™s been bottled at cask strength with no chill filtration or artificial coloring, allowing its true double-matured (American ex-bourbon followed by first-fill Oloroso sherry casks) nature to shine through. And shine through it does, with an easy-drinking 82.92-proof rating and tasting notes of dark chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla. Bottles are priced at ยฃ75,000 (~$93,000) a pop and are available only by request.

Old Elk Bourbon Cask Finish Series

Colorado-based Old Elk Bourbon has brought back their Cask Finish series with three brand-new expressions that are sure to inject some fun diversity into the brandโ€™s lineup. The three whiskeys are all finished in a different type of cask, with each offering up something unique. First thereโ€™s the Cognac Cask Finish, a high-test straight bourbon that spent 10 months maturing in ex-cognac casks from France. Next is the Port Cask Finish, another straight bourbon that takes on a sweeter profile thanks to its time spent in Portugeuse port wine barrels. Finally, thereโ€™s the Rum Cask Finish, a straight rye aged in 14-year-old Barbados rum barrels thatโ€™s bursting with tropical tasting notes. All three whiskeys are at least five years old, at least 100 proof and are available in limited quantities.

How Siri on Your Apple Watch Just Got Way Better

You can finally ask Siri more detailed questions about your workouts, general fitness and health data, but there’s a catch.

apple watch ultra 2Tucker Bowe

If you’re a seasoned Apple Watch wearer, you likely use “Siri” or “Hey Siri” (old habits die hard) voice commands for a whole bunch of things. To call or text your friends. To set timers and alarms. To start or end workouts. To play music. Or to answer the odd question about the weather. Basically anything to prevent you having to navigate its tiny screen or take your iPhone out of your pocket.

Well, as of recently, you can ask Siri some new things โ€” specifically about your health and fitness.

Thanks to a software update, watchOS 10.2, you can finally grant Siri access to information from your Health app. This allows you to ask the voice assistant specific things about your fitness and health. Here are some examples.

  • “How far did I run yesterday?” or “How far have I ran this week?”
  • “What’s my heart rate?” or “What’s my average heart rate today?”
  • “Did I close my exercise ring?”
  • “How much did I sleep last night?” or “How much sleep did I average this week?”

You can also give Siri voice commands to log various information into the Health app for you. Once you weigh yourself, you can ask Siri to log your weight. If you took certain vitamins or medications โ€” provided you’ve added the specifics manually in the Health app beforehand โ€” you can have Siri log those in, too. For more information about what you can ask Siri, check out Apple’s press release.

However, there’s a catch.

You can only do all this if you have one of the newest Apple Watches, the Series 9 and Ultra 2. The reason is that these newer models have the newest S9 chip that enables on-device Siri processing; they’re the only models that don’t risk your health data getting sent to the cloud.

You can use Siri on your iPhone (running iOS 17.2 or later) to log this same data but not directly on an older Apple Watch.

How to Give Siri Access to your Health Data

apple watch ultra 2
Before you can use, you need to give Siri access to your Health app.
Tucker Bowe

In order to grant Siri access to your health data, you first have to make sure your Apple Watch and iPhone are running the latest software, watchOS 10.2 (or later) and iOS 17.2 (or later), respectively. From there, you can grant access right from either device.

On your Apple Watch:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and select Health.
  3. Select Apps and Services.
  4. Select Siri.

Our New Collab Is Tropical, Tactical and Ready to Take on the World

What makes this Gear Patrol x GORUCK collab worth talking about โ€” by Gear Patrol Studios.

Here at Gear Patrol, weโ€™ve been committed to reporting on which products are worth your time and money โ€” and which ones arenโ€™t โ€” for more than 16 years. Thatโ€™s why when we put our name on one of our rare collabs, you know weโ€™re delivering a product you can trust, in partnership with a brand we truly believe in.

Today, weโ€™re excited to announce our latest effort: The Gear Patrol x GORUCK GR1 26L Backpack, plus the Gear Patrol x GORUCK Field Pocket.

When Gear Patrol Met GORUCK: A New Camo Is Born

In October of 2020, our Creative Director, Joe Tornatzky, took a walk through Manhattanโ€™s flower district. The stunning and unique pattern of a variegated elephant ear caught his eye and the former textile designer had the idea to turn it into a one-of-a-kind print: one that was nature-inspired and stylish and still paid homage to camoโ€™s tactical, military roots.

Joe saw the opportunity to bring his vision to life and who better to do it with than our trusted friends in the tactical rucking world, GORUCK? We joined forces and a collaboration was born.

man packing watch and tools away in camo pouch beside goruck bagGear Patrol Studios

What Makes the GR1 a Backpack We Wanted to Put Our Stamp On?

GORUCK was started by a couple who worked for the CIA and the Special Forces and they funneled all their experience at home and abroad into making the toughest, most capable rucksack on the market. Their original product, the GR1, has stood the test of time โ€” and then some โ€” becoming a flagship for a legendary brand that weโ€™ve put our recommendations behind time and time again.

man walking through forest wearing goruck bagGear Patrol Studios

The GR1โ€™s minimal design belies durability that really can stand up to any activity, anywhere. The ultra-tough, Special Forces-tested Cordura build has high-tenacity, low abrasion sections on the back and straps, so it wonโ€™t get worn down easily and also wonโ€™t wear through skin or clothes. Itโ€™s water-resistant, with three internal pockets including a โ€œbombproofโ€ laptop sleeve. Plus, itโ€™s built in the USA and the whole thing is backed by GORUCKโ€™s Scars Lifetime Guarantee.

But one of our favorite parts of GORUCKโ€™s system is its extreme customization, so how could we resist the opportunity to add to our collaboration with a GR1 Field Pocket ($145) to match? Use the padded three-pocket pouch as a dopp kit, to store camera gear or to keep electronics organized.

Weโ€™re proud to introduce our exclusive new print to the world with a company we trust and a product we love. Be the first to own GORUCKโ€™s meticulously designed and mercilessly tested GR1 backpack and Field Pocket in our standout elephant ear camo today.

The 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R (Finally) Packs More Power Than the Ram 1500 TRX

As the TRX departs Ram’s lineup, rival Ford gives it a 21-gun salute … by giving the Raptor even more power.

f 150 raptor r pickup driving through sandFord

Ford originally debuted the Raptor R back in 2022, revealing a pickup truck packing a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that pumped out a monstrous 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. That said, it surprised us at the launch that Ford didnโ€™t find an extra three ponies somewhere in oprder to supplant the 702 hp Ram 1500 TRX as Americaโ€™s most gratuitously powerful pickup. But Ford โ€” quite fairly โ€” pointed to the Raptor R being 400 pounds lighter as the most important attribute.

Well, apparently the power number did matter. At the 2024 F-150 reveal, Ford hinted that a Raptor R powertrain announcement was forthcoming. Now, with just a week and a half left in 2023, the brand has confirmed that the 2024 F-150 Raptor R will pack 720 horsepower โ€” 20 more than the initial model โ€” giving it the edge over Ram’s king of the tyrant pickups.

Ford did not go into too much detail on how the extra power was achieved

The brand noted that it was the product of โ€œreduced air inlet losses coupled with an optimized calibration.โ€ Ford also says the changes give the truck a wider torque curve, although the max output of 640 lb-ft goes unchanged.

Thereโ€™s no word yet on how the shift affects fuel economy. That said, under the previous calibration, the F-150 Raptor R earned just 10 mpg in city driving, and we don’t see this update making much of a dent in either direction there.

2023 ford f150 raptor r
Fun? Yes. Fuel-efficient? Nope.
Will Sabel Courtney

The Blue Oval is still technically getting one over on Ram

The 1500 TRX is getting one limited production run for the 2024 model year before Ram ditches the Hemi V8 entirely and starts manufacturing conventional and decidedly unconventional electric pickups. General Motors has declined to throw down a gauntlet in this battle; the Chevy Silverado ZR2 sticks with the standard, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 that comes in well under Ram and Ford’s off-road sport trucks in terms of power. So itโ€™s likely the F-150 Raptor R will now go down as Americaโ€™s most powerful combustion production pickup ever built. (At least, assuming you’re judging that based on horsepower; it seems likely that the heavy duty pickup truck category’s diesel torque wars will continue on for some time.)

trucks

Will Sabel Courtney

Will the extra power make a difference to F-150 Raptor R buyers?

Beyond noting to friends that it has more power? Probably not. The F-150 Raptor R is incredibly fun, but our enduring impression from driving it is how difficult it is to even properly deploy all that power โ€” whether youโ€™re on-road, off-road or just peacocking around town trying to make a lot of noise.

The Best Multi-Room Wireless Speakers to Place Around Your Home

Sonos is still the king of multi-room audio. But others like Apple (AirPlay 2) and Google (Chromecast) are catching up.

a group of speakersSonos, McIntosh, Apple

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

We’re deep in the age of streaming, and multi-room speaker systems are all the rage. They allow you to wirelessly group multiple speakers together over Wi-Fi โ€” there’s no cables โ€” so you can play the exact same audio throughout your entire home. It’s especially great for parties.

Sonos has been the biggest name in wireless multi-room speaker systems for some time. And while it still wears the crown, it has a lot of competition these days. A number of audio companies have mimicked Sonos to a tee, creating their own multi-room streaming ecosystems just for their speakers; Bose Home Audio, Yamaha’s MusicCast, Bowers & Wilkinsโ€™s Formation and Denonโ€™s HEOS, to name a few. Of course, the big boys of Amazon, Google and Apple have gotten into the mix, too.

The problem is that most of these multi-room systems don’t play nicely together. For example, you can’t have Amazon’s Echo and a Sonos speaker playing in the same setup. So if you want to have multiple speakers playing in unison through your house, you need to decide: which multi-room speaker system is right for you?

Before getting started, there are a few questions to ask: Are you looking for the best sound quality or multi-functionality, i.e. voice commands and smart home control? Do you have an iPhone or Android device? And if you want voice control, which music streaming service do you subscribe to? Whether it be Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music or Tidal, different voice assistants support voice commands to different services.

This guide identifies the most popular multi-room speaker systems to invest in right now, with one eye on the future: Aside from Sonos, each of these wireless streaming technologies works on an open network, allowing multiple speakers from various brands to stream high-quality music to different rooms in your house.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

A Sonos Speaker System

sonos era 300 speaker
Sonos’s two biggest standalone wireless speakers are the Era 300 (left) and Play:5 (right).
Photo by Tucker Bowe for Gear Patrol

What Is It? Sonos has been the industry leader for multi-room speakers since it launched the Play:3 all the way back in 2011. Three things have made this ecosystem so popular: sound quality, simplicity and longevity. In the past few years, Sonos has introduced smart speakers that support voice commands via Alexa, Google Assistant and Sonos’s own virtual assistant, Sonos Voice Control. Its newer speakers support AirPlay 2, as well, so you can easily stream music to them from your iPhone.

The Good: Sonos makes a lot of different speakers and soundbars so you have a lot of options when building out your system. Its speakers enable you to listen to CD-quality audio (or better if you have Tidal) as well as Dolby Atmos tracks. You can stream music from all of the major streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music. And since software updates are as simple as updating an app on your phone, tablet or computer, the speakers are designed to last a lifetime. As for ease of use, the Sonos app is best-in-class and walks you through the entire setup and grouping process so that it’s straightforward and easy.

Watch Out For: Older Sonos speakers do not support AirPlay 2. Due to on-going legal battles with Google, some of Sonos’s most recent speakers, including both Era speakers, do not currently support Google Assistant. If you want to connect a non-Sonos speaker to your Sonos system, you have to use a Sonos Port ($449) or Sonos Amp ($499), both of which are pretty expensive components.

An AirPlay 2 Speaker System

apple homepod
The second-generation HomePod is Apple’s flagship AIrPlay 2 speaker.
Tucker Bowe

What Is It? AirPlay 2 is Apple’s second-generation streaming protocol and it’s different from the original AirPlay because it actually supports multi-room streaming. Itโ€™s really easy to control via your iPhone, Mac or HomePod. And a lot of wireless speakers made by different manufacturers โ€“ not just ones made by Apple โ€“ support AirPlay 2, meaning you can mix and match speakers from different manufacturers and have them all play music together.

The Good: If youโ€™re locked into Apple’s ecosystem, meaning you own an iPhone, Mac and Apple TV, and you subscribe to Apple Music (or just have a vast iTunes library), buying a multi-room speaker system around AirPlay 2 is probably your best bet. You can easily group various AirPlay 2 speakers together via the Home app; you can also ask Siri on your iPhone or Mac to play music or podcasts throughout the multi-room speaker group. Plus, since the HomePod and HomePod mini are AirPlay 2 speakers with Siri baked right in, you can use either as the smart speaker in a multi-room group.

Watch Out For: Not all speakers that supported AirPlay also support AirPlay 2, meaning they canโ€™t play in a multi-room speaker system. If you have an older AirPlay speaker, do some research and check to see if it can be updated (over Wi-Fi) to support AirPlay 2.

A Chromecast Speaker System

multi speaker audio
The Nest Audio is Google’s flagship Chromecast-enabled smart speaker.
Photo by Tucker Bowe for Gear Patrol

What Is It? Chromecast is Googleโ€™s wireless streaming technology for multi-room audio. It has grown rapidly in popularity with the introduction of Google’s smart speakers, like the current Nest Audio (or older speakers like the Google Home, Home Max and Home Mini). All speakers with Chromecast built in can be integrated into a multi-room system. Some of them, if integrated with Google Assistant, respond to voice commands.

The Good: A growing number of speakers, soundbars and televisions by a variety of manufacturers (such as Bang & Olufsen, Pioneer, Sony and Vizio) are being integrated with Chromecast. This gives you more flexibility to mix and match speakers from various brands together and play the entire system in unison.

Watch Out For: Itโ€™s important to note that Google Cast and Chromecast speakers are different and canโ€™t be grouped together in a multi-room system. Speakers with built-in Chromecast or connected with a Chromecast Audio streaming puck can be controlled via Nest Audio or by your phoneโ€™s Google Assistant.

An Amazon Speaker System

echo studio
The Echo Studio is Amazon’s biggest and best-sounding smart speaker to date.
Tucker Bowe

What Is It? All of Amazon’s Echo speakers now support multi-room audio playback so, if you have several Echo devices (including the Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Studio, Echo Dot and Echo Show), you can designate each speaker as its own separate room, or sync them together in a one-room setup.

The Good: All speakers that work with Amazonโ€™s Multi-Room Music have Alexa built into them, meaning you can change the music with your voice from anywhere; as opposed to the Sonos One, which is the only speaker in a Sonos multi-room system that will respond to voice controls (unless thereโ€™s another Sonos One). The cost of entry is very low โ€” you can get two Echo Dots for less than $100. And setting up a multi-room system is pretty easy โ€” hereโ€™s how.

Watch Out For: Amazon’s Echo speakers cannot be grouped with non-Amazon-made speakers. Amazon has licensed out Alexa support so you can integrated other speakers with Alexa โ€” most new Sonos speakers support Alexa, for example โ€” but those canโ€™t be connected to the same multi-room audio system as your other Echo speakers.

Our 11 Favorite Cars, Trucks and SUVs We Drove in 2023

Every year, Gear Patrol’s Motoring staffers drive dozens upon dozens of rides. These ones sparked the most joy.

a group of carsToyota, Honda, Subaru

Those of us here at Gear Patrol’s Motoring desk drove a lot of cars in 2023, and we can’t wait to get right back behind the wheel in 2024. But with the calendar coming to a close and the ingredients for a tasty glass of boozy egg nog waiting to be assembled, it’s time to reflect on the year we had in the automotive world.

From brand-new trucks to budget off-roaders to anything-but-budget sports cars, here are our favorite vehicles that we drove in 2023.

Subaru Crosstrek / Crosstrek Wilderness

The Crosstrekโ€™s formula โ€” being a cheaper, more chuckable Outback โ€” is a winner. For the all-new 2024 model year Crosstrek, Subaru followed even more in the Outback’s footsteps and added a full-bore Wilderness version. You get Subaruโ€™s excellent symmetrical AWD system paired with 9.3 inches of ground clearance โ€” nearly as much as the base Jeep Wrangler. Itโ€™s optimally sized for navigating a trail, clambers over almost everything you put in front of it, remains charming on-road โ€” and best of all, starts under $35,000. Oh, and if you don’t need quite that much off-road capability, the lesser Crosstreks are delightful as well โ€” Tyler Duffy

BMW i7 / 7 Series

bmw i7 matte black 2023 Will Sabel Courtney

The new G70-gen 7 Series is, letโ€™s face it, far from attractive. But arenโ€™t we taught not to judge books by their covers, not to write off people based on appearance, not to be rude and vain? To discount the 7er for its pug-fugly mug would be a sin. And not just because that would be bad behavior โ€” but also because everything else about it is so good.

Nowadays, you can have the 7 Series in rear- or all-wheel-drive, gas or electric or plug-in hybrid form, and with power anywhere between 375 and 650 horses โ€” a veritable Baskin Robbins of variants. I enjoyed it last year during my brief first drive, but spending a few days with the i7 xDrive60 EV variant on my home turf was enough to remind me just how it blends dynamism and comfort better than the vast majority of new cars on sale today. And believe it or not, I even started to warm up to its appearance โ€” at least, when specced out in dark gray or black, which gives it a Darth Vader menace that seems all too appropriate. โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

Toyota Tacoma

orange tacoma on a dirt road Jonathan Harper

For the 2024 model year, Toyota finally revitalized the Tacoma, moving it to the new TNGA-F platform. And like the Tundra and Sequoia, itโ€™s a game-changing upgrade. We havenโ€™t driven the hybrid yet, but even with the less-potent gas engine, the new Taco is a night-and-day upgrade. It handles like a modern truck, has an interior befitting a modern truck, and the new eight-speed automatic transmission is buttery smooth. The Tacoma has long been the coolest midsize truck, and that’s still true, at least in my book. And I suspect when the hybrid arrives, it will be objectively the best. โ€” Tyler Duffy

Porsche 911 GT3 / GT3 Touring / S/T

a silver sports car parked on a road with trees and hills in the background Will Sabel Courtney

Okay, Iโ€™m cheating slightly by bundling two (or even arguably three) cars together. Forgive me โ€” but Porscheโ€™s naturally aspirated street-oriented 911s are so bloody good, they all deserve a salute. If any other automaker built a sports car with a 500-plus-horsepower naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual and the level of engagement, performance and driving pleasure packed into the GT3 and S/T, weโ€™d call the result an unabashed supercar; the only reason we donโ€™t here is because these 911s have the same face as your dadโ€™s dentistโ€™s convertible.

The 911 S/T is a truly remarkable piece of machinery, distilling all the most involving parts of the 992-generation lineup into a dream of a Porsche. But the GT3 โ€” in both extroverted regular or visually subdued Touring form โ€” still delivers 97 percent of that carโ€™s goodness and fun, while being (at least, in theory) much more attainable. If I hit it big on Jeopardy! and won enough cash to buy a two-car garage, the GT3 would be one of those cars โ€ฆ assuming I couldnโ€™t get one of the 1,963 S/Ts, of course. โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

honda accord touring hybrid parked on the street Tyler Duffy

There are few surer bets in the automotive world than that any new Honda Accord will be brilliant. And, yep, Honda did it again with the all-new 2023 model. Itโ€™s practical, it’s precise, and despite losing the 2.0-liter turbo four for a less-potent hybrid powertrain, it remains remarkably fun to drive. And over a week of not especially abstemious driving, I averaged nearly 40 mpg combined. You probably want a crossover. You should be in the market for an Accord Hybrid. โ€” Tyler Duffy

Chevrolet Trax

a blue car parked on the side of a street Will Sabel Courtney

Itโ€™s been a while since GM made a great affordable car. (Actually, apart from the Ford Maverick, itโ€™s been a while since Detroit made a great affordable car.) But the all-new Trax excels by taking the personal transportation basics and repackaging them up with what Americans want: a boxy body shape, a higher ride height and a handsome appearance.

That would have been plenty to move metal even with a price in the high $20K range, but Chevy also made the Trax a screaming deal to boot. The base model with cruise control and wireless CarPlay starts under $22,000 with destination, while the more appealing LT with the nicer screens and automatic climate control is under $23.5K. Thereโ€™s also a surprisingly attractive Buick version if you prefer the four-door-SUV-coupe look, but going that route negates a lot of the value proposition. With the Trax, the less you spend, the happier youโ€™ll be. โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato

lamborghini huracan sterrato yellow Will Sabel Courtney

As someone who spent the first half of his life in Vermont and the second in New York City, believe me, I appreciate the value of a car with a suspension that soaks up bumps without compromising performance. Hence, I love the Huracan Sterrato.

Itโ€™s admittedly no crossover โ€” I scraped the nose on 3rd Avenue within two minutes of driving off โ€” but the extra height, more pliant suspension and sidewall-laden tires give it a more pleasant, relaxed ride compared with other supercars (and even some sportier sedans). The V10 is every bit the screaming delight itโ€™s always been, revving to 8,000 rpm like itโ€™s going out of style (which, admittedly, it sadly is).

My sole complaint about the car: the optional roof-mounted spare on my tester, which is of middling use (itโ€™s only size-matched to the front wheels), incredibly noisy at speeds above 50 mph and completely ruins the lines of the Huracan. Okay, that and the fact that it has arguably the worldโ€™s least-usable infotainment system. But hey, whatโ€™s a Lambo without a few quirks? โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

Aston Martin DB12

Most people lucky enough to drive one loved the DB11 … but for a few quibbles. With the DB12, Aston Martin did the sensible thing and fixed those little problems. The DB12 packs a meaty 671-horsepower from its AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8. You wield it through a marvelously tuned eight-speed automatic gearbox. And it strikes the perfect balance between exhilaration and luxury. It proved the perfect companion for a spirited drive along the Route Napoleon (and muttering under our breath while being trapped in a queue behind a deliberate Renault Clio). โ€” Tyler Duffy

Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

cadillac ct5 v blackwing electric blue 2022 Will Sabel Courtney

So, that two-car Jeopardy! garage I mentioned earlier? The other stall would be filled by the CT5-V Blackwing. Never mind the fact that having two rear-wheel-drive, manual-transmission cars while living in New York City is a terrible division of resources โ€” Cadillacโ€™s super-sedan is so good, Iโ€™d gladly deal with the issues that would arise with using it as a daily driver.

I spent 10 days this summer driving up, down and around Michigan in the CT5-V B’wing, during which time it proved itself every bit the perfect everyday ride. Itโ€™s equally content cruising along the highway at 75 mph as it is carving up fast B-roads at 100, with an engine that feels as though it could spin the Earth the other way โ€˜round and a ride-handling balance that borders on magic. Sure, the clutch pedal hates stop-and-go traffic, and sure, it sucks down premium gas like George Costanza going to town on an ice cream sundae โ€” but the package as a whole is so lovely, so well-rounded and so delightful, itโ€™s impossible for me not to love it with my whole heart. โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD ZR2 / GMC Sierra 2500 HD AT4X AEV

pickup truck Will Sabel Courtney

Confession time: I love heavy duty trucks. While standard half-tons are becoming more car-like and refined as they cater increasingly towards people who buy them for appearances, HD rigs โ€” even the off-road-focused ZR2 and AT4X models I drove โ€” still feel like tools first and toys second.

What makes the mechanically-identical Silverado HD and Sierra HD great is that they bring a pleasant dash of refinement to the table without losing the truckiness that defines the breed. The cabin is comfortable, the ride compliant and the interior is downright cavernous โ€ฆ but the diesel V8 still sounds delightfully industrial, the steering slow and heavy, and the climb up to the cabin nearly requires climbing rope. Add in the fact that the 2500 HD is generally priced almost identically to its Silverado 1500 equivalent in many cases yet packs more power, size and payload capacity, and itโ€™s hard not to ask โ€ฆ why settle for less? โ€” Will Sabel Courtney

The Complete Lexus Buying Guide: Every Model, Explained

Lexusโ€™s lineup isnโ€™t nearly as complicated as its German rivals, but it could still use some explaining.

lexus gx on rocky terrainLexus

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you wonโ€™t find on the average About page.

Lexus is Toyota’s luxury car division based out of Nagoya, Japan. Toyota created the marque in 1989 to have a more exclusive brand for its premium cars in foreign markets. Lexus started out with the LS and ES sedans before expanding to SUVs, coupes, convertibles and even the occasional supercar. Main rivals include German heavyweights Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, as well as its Japanese-market foes Infiniti and Acura and American rivals Cadillac and Lincoln.

Lexus is very much part of Toyota, with all that entails. Lexus can be more conservative than its competitors, being slower to react to rends and less frequent with its model upgrades. Lexus can also get eccentric and polarizing with its style; the brandโ€™s current penchant for oversized โ€œspindle grillesโ€ is a prime example.

Lexus durability, however, is legendary; in one famous example, a 1996 LS 400 crossed the million-mile mark in February 2019. And the brand has cache: Hip-hop and country music lyrics frequently reference Lexus due to the carsโ€™ status as a wealth signifier, the nameโ€™s alliterative value, and the handy fact that Lexus rhymes with Texas.

How Lexus Names Its Models

On the surface, Lexus employs a simple alphanumeric naming system. The first letter tells you the model. The second letter gives you the body style (S for sedan, C for coupe, X for SUV). The three-digit number denotes the engine displacement (a 2.0-liter engine becomes โ€œ200,โ€ 3.0 liters equals โ€œ300,โ€ et cetera). An “h” after the three-digit number indicates a hybrid powertrain.

In practice, it can be … not so simple. The model letters โ€” U,L,I,N,G,E,R โ€” have no real meaning and don’t follow alphabetical order for price or status. The three-digit number no longer tracks engine displacement directly. And on some models, the same three-digit number can be used with entirely different engines.

To alleviate the confusion, hereโ€™s a reference guide:

Lexus Terminology

  • F: โ€œFโ€ designates a car produced by Lexusโ€™ high-performance division, the equivalent of AMG at Mercedes or M at BMW. The โ€œFโ€ comes from Fuji International Speedway, the track where Lexus develops those cars.
  • F Sport: โ€œF Sportโ€ cars are sportier trims of standard Lexus models. They include modest performance enhancements and interior/exterior styling upgrades. They do not receive an enhanced powertrain as true โ€œFโ€ cars do.
  • LF: This is the designation used for concept cars, such as the LF-1. LF stands for โ€œLexus Future.โ€
  • Spindle Grille: Lexus uses large, distinctive grilles on the front of vehicles extending to the bottom of the car. Itโ€™s a polarizing design feature. Some have likened the shape to the mouth of the villain from the Predator films.

The 2025 Subaru Ascent: Everything You Need to Know

The second-generation Ascent could bring some game-changing updates.

a black car parked on the side of a streetSubaru

Subaru had a conundrum in the late 2010s. Outback and Forester families loved their vehicles, but they were outgrowing them. Subaru needed a larger three-row option to keep those customers in Subarus. The answer was the Ascent, a bigger three-row Forester in both appearance and spirit.

The Ascent debuted for the 2019 model year, and received a mid-cycle refresh for 2023. That means a new second-generation model should be right around the corner. Hereโ€™s what you need to know about the 2025 Subaru Ascent.

When will the new Subaru Ascent arrive?

subaru ascent onyx edition Subaru

Subaru has not announced when the second-generation Ascent will arrive. Torque News thinks it will be the 2025 model year. Updating the Ascent for then would track with the Subaru Forester, which launched for the same model year.

A debut early in 2024 and a production launch in late 2024 for calendar year 2025 would be the earliest timeline. A less ambitious schedule would have Subaru launching the new model sometime in 2025 as a 2026 vehicle.

Will the Subaru Ascent use a new platform?

subaru ascent onyx edition Subaru

Probably not. The Crosstrek and Forester both stuck with the Subaru Global Platform for a second go-around. The Ascent should as well. It would be tough to see Subaru embarking on a new combustion platform at the same time it is making a huge push toward EVs.

Will the Subaru Ascent offer a hybrid powerplant?

subaru ascent onyx edition Subaru

Subaru has not confirmed that the next Ascent is getting a hybrid, but all signs point to that happening. Subaru signed an agreement to use Toyotaโ€™s next-generation hybrid tech beginning in the mid-2020s, and we know the 2025 Forester is getting one sometime in 2025.

Either the more efficient THS hybrid or the more powerful Hybrid Max hybrid from the Toyota Grand Highlander could be solid (and likely) options for a hybrid Ascent.

Will the Subaru Ascent go electric?

toyota 3 row suv Toyota

Potentially. Subaru has said it wants to get three additional electric SUVs to market by 2026. According to Automotive News, one of them will be a three-row model that will be a rebadged version of the three-row EV Toyota is building. Itโ€™s possible that the vehicle could carry Ascent branding, though Subaru has not confirmed that yet.

How much will the next Subaru Ascent cost?

subaru ascent onyx edition Subaru

Subaru has not announced pricing for the next Ascent yet. We don’t expect a dramatic price increase from the current $34,395 MSRP. But offering a hybrid model could see the price increase at the top end.

Will Subaru give the next Ascent a Wilderness trim?

2022 subaru outback wilderness Subaru

The Wilderness trim has been very successful on the Outback and Forester. Subaru just added one for the new Crosstrek. We’d be surprised if Subaru did not have a similar off-road package planned for the Ascent to counter rivals like the Honda Pilot Trailsport.

How to Pack a Suitcase (the Right Way) for Holiday Travel

Master Marie Kondo’s folding techniques. They’ll make you a packing expert โ€” and save you cash on a checked bag.

suitcaseHenry Phillips

Before a vacation, whether home for the holidays or abroad in the summer months, the thought of packing looms dark and dense overhead. Itโ€™s a chore undertaken with the knowledge that something is bound to be forgotten and that overpacking one category often means neglecting another. Packing, then, is an art form โ€” one thatโ€™s easily mastered with a bit of guidance.

โ€œThe number-one mistake that people make is packing for every potential occurrence, rather than what they need,โ€ says Anna Bauer, a certified organization and packing specialist, noting that while vacation may be a getaway, itโ€™s not a trip to an alternate reality. โ€œWho you are in your everyday life is exactly who youโ€™ll be on vacation. Youโ€™re not going to start wearing things you typically never wear.โ€ In other words, stick to the comfortable and the familiar.

How a suitcase is packed is just as important as what goes inside it. Here, Bauer shares her guiding principles for more efficient packing:

Fold, Don’t Roll

โ€œRolling actually makes your clothes more wrinkled, it takes up more room, and if youโ€™re using space-saving packing tools, rolling just isnโ€™t a good technique.โ€ The much-hyped KonMari method of folding offers maximum efficiency, allowing individual items to stand vertically and squeeze into narrower spaces.

How to Fold

T-Shirts

henry phillipsHenry Phillips

Fold the shirt horizontally into thirds, tucking sleeves back as needed. Bring the neckline down an inch from the bottom of the shirt, and roll it vertically into thirds.

Button-Up Shirts

henry phillipsHenry Phillips

Make sure that the top, middle and bottom buttons are closed in order to allow the shirt to keep its form. Fold the shirt in half vertically, using the button placket as a crease. Fold the sleeves in toward the body. Bring the bottom of the shirt up to the armpit or base of the sleeve. Fold in half again, making sure to keep the collar neatly creased.

Pants

henry phillipsHenry Phillips

Fold the pants in half, horizontally, so that the back pockets are visible. Bring the bottom of the pants up to the top of the back pocket. Fold up into thirds. When placing folded pants in a bag, lay them in alternating directions so that the thicker waistband sides are not stacked.

Shorts

henry phillipsHenry Phillips

Fold the outside of each leg across the middle into thirds. Roll vertically into thirds.

Compartmentalize

Organizational tools โ€” packing cubes, vacuum bags, even Ziploc bags โ€” facilitate more thoughtful packing. โ€œThey keep you accountable in terms of quantities because you can only fit so many items in a bag,โ€ Bauer explains.

Think in Layers

โ€œPeople often make the mistake of packing bulky items instead of many smaller layers. Think in terms of different layers that can be worn together and separately, especially during early summer, when mornings tend to be cool, afternoons are warm, and the temperature goes back down at night.โ€

Do Laundry (Yes, Really)

โ€œPeople will go on two-week vacations and pack 20 pairs of underwear and 20 pairs of socks. That takes up a lot of room in your suitcase,โ€ Bauer says. โ€œBut packing five to seven pairs of underwear and socks, and knowing that you can do laundry at an Airbnb, at a hotel, or, worst-case scenario, wash by hand in a hotel sink, is far cheaper than having to check a bag. It goes back to the concept of a vacation still being your reality โ€” there are still places to do laundry.โ€

Pack It Up

henry phillipsHenry Phillips

While lining up folded items is a central tenet of the KonMari method, Bauer recommends stacking pants on top of each other in alternating directions so that the thicker waistbands are not directly on top of each other. Stack shoes at the bottom of the bag, with soles facing downward, โ€œthat way, when the bag is upright, dirt from shoes isnโ€™t falling down onto clean clothes,โ€ she explains.

Place miscellaneous small items โ€” a dopp kit, socks, underwear โ€” on top of the clothing. To free up even more space, plan to wear bulkier items (like thick sweaters or heavy boots) while in transit.
