Do you eat food or drink fluids? These incredibly interesting and innovative products cover all of the above and more.

The best new food and drink drops of the year stand out because they take what you thought you knew about eating and drinking and stand it on its head.

Can mashed potatoes be a THC edible? Sure. Can ready-to-drink cocktails actually be good? Why not! Can a barn-burner of a 21-year-old single malt whiskey be from Vermont? It sure can.

Some things about eating and drinking will never change, but all the things that can? This year was about shaking them up.

Glenlivet Twist and Mix Cocktails

a few hands holding glasses of alcoholGlenlivet

Why It Matters: Ready-to-drink cocktails are nothing new, but The Glenlivet is taking the idea in a fascinating new direction: why make your cocktail before youโ€™re ready to drink it?

The Big Picture: Youโ€™ve probably tried ready-to-drink cocktails before โ€” and if youโ€™re actually someone who likes their booze, youโ€™ve probably been disappointed by them, too. But The Glenlivetโ€™s reimagined version aims to elevate the concept to new heights by simplifying it into its constituent parts. The idea is simple: the Scotch is in the bottle, the ingredients for the cocktail are in the cap; when youโ€™re ready to drink, just twist the cap, and it launches the ingredients into the whisky, at which point all you have to do is pour. The collection launched with Manhattan and Old Fashioned variants; granted, neither is usually made with Scotch whisky โ€ฆ but considering you get eight servings per bottle, it may be untraditional, but itโ€™s also a killer deal.

Appleton Estate 17 Year Old Legend Rum

a bottle of alcohol next to a cocktailAppleton Estate

Why It Matters: The secret ingredient behind the one, true mai tai returns (in a way) in the form of this 17-year-old limited-run rum.

The Big Picture: If youโ€™ve ever had a mai tai, odds are good you havenโ€™t had a real one. The cocktail was invented by Victor Bergeron, a.k.a. Trader Vic โ€” yes, from the Warren Zevon song โ€” as a way to showcase J. Wray and Nephew 17 Year rum, but that particular expression vanished from the market a few years later. Now, however, Appleton Estate has recreated it, calling it their 17 Year Old Legend rum. Consumed neat, it serves up delightful flavors of caramelized and burnt tropical fruits with a distinctive, pleasant Jamaican rum funk. In a proper mai tai, however, itโ€™s an experience for the ages โ€” one that makes you understand why olโ€™ Vic was so excited to create it back in 1944.

Dogfish Head Citrus Squall

a group of oranges and a can of soda on a tableDogfish Head

Why It Matters: Made with grapefruit juice and blue agave nectar, this new brew is, effectively, a blend of a golden ale and a paloma โ€” an innovative intermingling of beer and cocktail.

The Big Picture: The craft beer world is always innovating, but odds are good youโ€™ve never tried anything quite like this double golden ale. (Or perhaps any double golden, considering itโ€™s hardly a popular style in 2023.) Delaware-based Dogfish Headโ€™s Citrus Squall is brewed with agave nectar and grapefruit juice, making it almost like a beer-paloma hybrid. Yet take a sip, and youโ€™ll discover a unique flavor that is reminiscent of a hazy IPA. Itโ€™s fun, unorthodox and truly innovative โ€” characteristics we love to see any brewery impart into its beers.

WhistlePig Bรฉhรดlden

a bottle of alcoholWhistlePig

Why It Matters: The Vermont distilleryโ€™s first entry into the single malt whiskey world proves every bit a revelation.

The Big Picture: If someone told you that you were about to sample a 21-year-old single malt whiskey, youโ€™d probably assume it hailed from Scotland, maybe Japan โ€” but not the Green Mountain State. WhistlePigโ€™s The Bรฉhรดlden actually traces its lineage across the continent โ€” the original liquid is believed to hail from Canada โ€” but it finishes its journey at the distillery in Vermont, where it enters its bottles at 92 proof. However you describe its roots, though, thereโ€™s no arguing about the quality of the finished product: packing flavors that dance from honey to baking spice to oatmeal cookie and (of course) maple, this single malt is one of the best whiskeys weโ€™ve ever tasted. Too bad only 18 barrels worth of it will ever exist.

MIIR New Standard French Press

a couple of women holding coffee mugs and smilingMiiR

Why It Matters: A forward-thinking brand improves on a century-old process with premium materials and a unique, coffee grounds-isolating approach.

The Big Picture: While the French press was patented in 1924, the design hasnโ€™t evolved much since Michael Caine raised its profile in the 1965 spy flick The Ipcress File โ€” until now. The New Standardโ€™s big differentiator is a quick-release grounds basket you can surgically extract from the carafe after brewing. Weโ€™ve found that not only does it strain like a champ, but because you must add just the right amount of grounds and water for the whole thing to function properly, it actually trains you to brew the perfect cup. MIIRโ€™s sturdy stainless steel vacuum-insulated carafe keeps that java toasty too.

Daniel Weller Bourbon

a bottle of alcohol and a glass of whiskey on a tableDaniel Weller

Why It Matters: The Weller name is well-known in the whiskey world. But with the new Daniel Weller line, Buffalo Trace Distillery is going experimental with its beloved brand.

The Big Picture: If you know bourbon, you probably know the name Weller; its 12-year expression has grown from a mighty bargain to practical unobtanium in recent years. But Buffalo Trace Distillery, which puts out the fabled liquid, sees room for the brand to grow โ€” in the form of an experimental new line called the Daniel Weller Bourbon series. The first installment from the collection, Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat, dropped this year with a $499 MSRP and a fascinating taste courtesy of the aforementioned wheat, distilled to perfection in a E.H. Taylor microstill then aged for just under 12 years. Expect a fresh Daniel Weller expression to arrive every two years โ€ฆ and believe us, weโ€™ll be in line to try them every time they do.

Choices Premium Edibles

a hand grabbing a package of ediblesChoices

Why It Matters: Revolutionizing the THC edibles category, Choices offers a whopping 100+ different cannabis-infused products, ranging from traditional varieties โ€” like chocolates and cookies โ€” to the more unique. Mashed potatoes, anyone?

The Big Picture: Most of us associate weed edibles with classic interpretations: brownies, gummies, butter, etc. However, THC as a food additive is essentially limitless. Sadly, this has not been reflected by the cannabis industry at large. The majority of edible manufacturers still make a select few categories. Choices, a recreational THC brand out of Los Angeles (created by Milk Bar Pastry Chef Casey Shea), seeks to change that and turn the industry on its head. Having launched just last year, Choices already offers over 100 different SKUs covering a range of doses as low as 2.5mg per serving up to 10mg. And they run the gamut of foods, too, including (but not limited to) condiments, confections, drink mixes, popsicles โ€” the list goes on and on. The brand even offers a range of dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan options. Weed edibles have never been so versatile.

Vibes Release Papers

rolling papersVibes

Why It Matters: Using its sizable platform for good, fan-favorite joint rolling papers brand Vibes’ latest release maintains the high-quality materials and performance we love while redistributing a portion of the profits to benefit the Last Prisoner Project, a cannabis reform non-profit.

The Big Picture: Vibes is one of the biggest names in rolling papers โ€” and there’s good reason for that. Along with being well-made โ€” largely courtesy of their slow-burning yet still easy to roll rice paper makeup โ€” the brand’s products are the brainchild of Berner, a Bay Area rapper and the CEO of Cookies (another cannabis-related company). That means these must-haves are created by and for stoners. But the well-known brand took a step into the social justice space with this release. Yes, the papers are as well-crafted as awalys. But the fact that the profits benefit a charity concerned with freeing incarcerated peoples still serving time for crimes that are no longer crimes (like possession of marijuana) means Vibes is putting its money where its mouth is, so to speak. And that is a very good thing for everyone, incarcerated or not.

Storz & Bickel Venty

a person vapingStorz & Bickel

Why It Matters: This heavy-hitting vape brand’s first completely new release in about a decade is a new vaporizer that’s also its fastest โ€” and the first with its own adjustable airflow.

The Big Picture: Storz & Bickel is no stranger to innovation, having helped to essentially kickstart the weed vaporizer industry as we know it. But the Venty marks the brand’s first major step forward in a long time โ€” one that will likely send ripples through the rest of the industry. This is because the vape in question has a lightning-quick heat-up time of just 20 seconds (nearly half the time of the next-fastest dry herb vape). As if that incredible speed is not enough, the Venty is also the first of the brand’s offerings to have an adjustable airflow โ€” meaning you can change how much (or how little) vapor it emits per hit. Package that all in an incredibly precise, portable package and itโ€™s easy to see what makes this cannabis device a technological marvel.

Airhood Wireless Portable Range Hood

a person cooking sliced potatoes on a stove next to a fanAirhood

Why It Matters: Your range hood is the unsung hero of your kitchen. Or, it would be if it sucked more. The AirHood fixes that problem.

The Big Picture: If you live in an apartment, you may never know the merits of a good range hood designed to temper smoke, odor and that thin layer of oily residue that coats half your kitchen every time you cook. The AirHood aims to change that. Debuting on Kickstarter last year, the countertop range hood (available in both a wired and wireless version) sits on the counter next to your stove, while a fan spinning at up to 5,000 rpm sucks in smoke and grease. Its stainless steel mesh oil filter is removable and its space-age-inspired design fits right into a modern kitchenโ€™s aesthetics.

Our Place Wonder Oven

a person putting food in an ovenOur Place

Why It Matters: Our Place’s first foray into countertop appliances cooks sides and small bites faster than your normal oven โ€” and more stylishly, too.

The Big Picture: Our Place took the internet by storm when it released its viral Always Pan in 2019, following up with a bevy of pots, pans and accessories. This year, they finally ventured into countertop appliances with the Wonder Oven โ€” a 6-in-1 cooker that toasts, roasts, bakes, broils, air fries and reheats. Two things set it apart from the myriad alternatives on the market: First, it boasts a steam infusion feature a la the much more expensive Balmuda Toaster, which keeps food like toast from drying out. Secondly, the Wonder Oven looks better than anything else you could put on your countertop. We’re sold.

Ember Baby Bottle System Plus

a woman holding a bottle of milkEmber

Why It Matters: A brand known for its divisive coffee mugs may have finally found its ultimate niche in baby bottles that heat milk or formula to the perfect temperature exactly when you need it.

The Big Picture: Ember was founded on the premise that people need a coffee mug that keeps coffee or tea at the perfect temperature. We’re not here to debate the merits of such devices, only to praise the brand for carrying it technology into the absolute perfect category: baby bottles. The System includes two 6-ounce bottles, a warming puck that you can charge for two feedings, an insulating “Thermal Dome” that keeps milk cold for up to four hours before you warm it up for drinking and various adapters for compatibility with Dr. Brownโ€™s Wide-Neck and Philips Avent Natural nipples. Say goodbye to guesswork and fussy water baths.

Kamado Joe Konnected Joe Grill

a grill with meat and vegetablesKamado Joe

Why It Matters: The Konnected Joe isn’t just the most technologically advanced kamado you can buy. It might be the most convenient charcoal grill ever made.

The Big Picture: Grilling with charcoal is great. It’s also fussy as hell, requiring steps to light the bed, maintain the heat and, ultimately, clean all that dusty ash out. Enter the Konnected Joe, which offers the flavor and heat of your decades-old kettle grill with the convenience and precision of an indoor oven. Like with all grills, assembly and setup here are admittedly arduous. But once you’re going, the Konnected Joe requires little more of you than to load up the charcoal and push a button. The main selling point is the grill’s ability to autoregulate its temperature like an oven, however, plenty of other features add to the overall convenience like a slide-out ash drawer for easy cleanup and heat deflector that can create direct and indirect heating zones.

Ooni Volt Electric Pizza Oven

a person is preparing a pizzaOoni

Why It Matters: An oven steel will only get you so far. Ooni’s first indoor pizza oven soars up to 850 degrees Fahrenheit (in less than 20 minutes) to deliver restaurant-quality pies โ€” without the delivery fee.

The Big Picture: Ooni isn’t the first brand to release an indoor pizza oven but it might be the one most poised to popularize the novelty appliance. The Volt is the company’s first take on an indoor pizza oven, and it’s angled towards apartment dwellers with limited outdoor space โ€” or any cooks who would prefer a seamless pizza experience powered by electricity instead of gas or fire. The Volt gets hotter than its next closest competitor, Breville’s Smart Oven Pizzaiolo, and two independently adjustable heating elements allow for maximum control. More often than not, the result is an evenly cooked pizza on the top, bottom and sides, whether you’re cooking Neapolitan or New York-style pie.

The 9 Best Home Accessories, Gadgets and Furniture Items of 2023

From the living room, to the kitchen, to the literal trash, the domestic division of this year’s GP100 is packed with innovative and interesting products.

There are far more products for your home than could possibly fit inside it. Even if you limit yourself to just the good ones, there are more than you can store or afford. When kitting out your ever-less humble abode, the trick is finding the products that put a new twist on existing styles or add a hidden functionality to an everyday necessity.

Whether youโ€™re looking for an all-in-one robot vacuum or an inflatable dog kennel, these innovative, interesting, inimitable products will make your home an even better place.

Diggs Enventur Travel Kennel

a dog in the back of a truckDiggs

Why It Matters: This clever inflatable dog kennel makes a typically bulky necessity sleek and easy to store for that large amount of time that you aren’t actually using it.

The Big Picture: Of all your pupโ€™s belongings, a kennel probably manages to take up the most space while providing the least frequent use. The Eventur Travel Kennel by Diggs skips the usually hefty and โ€” letโ€™s be honest โ€” ugly plastic frame for an inflatable design made with waterproof, puncture-resistant materials. Not only is the kennel easier to store once deflated and folded down for your convenience, but itโ€™s also designed with your pet‘s comfort in mind, featuring ventilation as well as cushioned, angled walls that make it compatible with most cars. And yes, the pump is included.

Curio Ionic Brush Set

a cleaning brush setCurio | Matthew Barnes

Why It Matters: Curioโ€™s beautiful home goods, like its elegant, magnetic brush set, have us wondering why we ever had to choose between function and style.

The Big Picture: If youโ€™re obsessed with beautifying the little details of your home, then Curio is the new home goods brand to keep your eye on, turning eyesores like kitchen sponges and brushes into functional and visually appealing accessories. The brandโ€™s Iconic Brush Set comes with three brushes โ€” a bottle brush, palm brush and dish brush โ€” featuring stainless steel handles available in four metallic finishes and a magnetic pedestal that allows the brushes to stand upright on display.

Knoll Florence Knoll Model 33 Sofa

a chair and benchesKnoll

Why It Matters: A classic piece of mid-century modern design is back on the market โ€” at a price that isnโ€™t totally absurd.

The Big Picture: Despite its name, mid-century modern furniture is virtually timeless, and few do the style better than Knoll. The furniture brand has revived the Florence Knoll Model 33, a classic 1950s sofa design, though perhaps not the classic sofa design, a title that belongs to the pre-eminently iconic and chunkier Florance Knoll Sofa. The Model 33’s more spartan design boasts a steel frame and two long, rectangular cushions and is available in a variety of upholstery and colors to match your space. But crucially, it’s also about a third of the price of the Florence Knoll Sofa.

Backdrop x Porsche

a paint can sitting on the seat of a carBackdrop

Why It Matters: Breaking the staid conventions of interior design, this collaboration between Porsche and Backdrop brings iconic colors from the driveway into your living room.

The Big Picture: For the Porsche owner who has everything โ€” or for the Porsche fan who can’t afford an entire carโ€”comes this collab with paint brand Backdrop featuring paints in four vibrant colors. โ€œSpeed Yellowโ€ or โ€œRuby Starโ€ may not be particularly conservative choices for your bedroom or foyer, but if youโ€™re feeling bold, you can grab any one of the four available colors in interior, exterior, and semi-gloss formulations. And it comes with a Porsche (keychain) to match!

Vipp15 Rubbish

a metal trash can in a roomVipp

Why It Matters: A trashcan made of trash that doesnโ€™t look like trash is the pinnacle of trashcan technology.

The Big Picture: The fact that this trash can is made with, well, trash is only upstaged by the fact that itโ€™s incredibly handsome. Who knew garbage could be so beautiful? Vipp created a material composed of plastic waste and sawdust for this rubbish bin that gives it an almost natural-looking hue and texture thatโ€™s neither hideous nor ostentatious. So why pick up a trash can from a big box store when you could have this interior design masterpiece? Well, you will have to pay a premium to enjoy the surprisingly charming gag.

iRobot Roomba Combo j9+

a roomba vacuum charging in a roomiRobot

Why It Matters: iRobotโ€™s latest Roomba model takes its form-factor to the logical conclusion by doing (almost) everything for you, from its self-emptying docking station to a new scrubbing mop feature.

The Big Picture: While the robot vacuums of the past have been easy targets for criticism, thanks to high prices and disappointing performance, the Roomba Combo j9+ has caught our attention for all the right reasons. The deviceโ€™s mop improves upon the j7+ with a new back-and-forth scrubbing motion that should be more effective and reduce streaks. Plus, the robot vacuumโ€™s docking station will not only quietly auto-empty but also fill the vacuumโ€™s mop tank for 30 days, profoundly changing how useful the mopping feature is. And thanks to a new โ€œDirt Detectiveโ€ feature, the vacuum will work smarter by prioritizing the dirtiest areas of your space.

Gantri x Craighill Flux Table Light

a lamp on a tableGantri

Why It Matters:Playful design and high-quality light makes this Gantri and Craighill collaboration whimsical and exemplary.

The Big Picture: A room’s lighting is everything, especially during the darker winter months. And Craighillโ€™s first light in collaboration with Gantri, the Flux Table Light, features a calming, modern design inspired by a melting candle. The light has dimmable, museum-grade LEDs, is made with plant-based materials and comes in three colors (Forest, Stone and Persimmon).

Herman Miller Passport Work Table

a laptop on a coffee table next to a sofaHerman Miller

Why It Matters:Characteristically practical and sleek, the Herman Miller Passport Work Table is also uniquely suited for modern-day work.

The Big Picture: If you’re working from home, you aren’t sitting at a desk eight hours a day. Fortunately, that’s the actual reality Herman Millerโ€™s Passport Work Table is designed for. With optional wheels and adjustable height, it allows you to change positions and even locations without sacrificing floor space on single-purpose furniture or moving your equipment from surface to surface. The table comes in small and large sizes, boasting a maximum height of 31 to 45 inches respectively. While it wonโ€™t offer you the same surface area or storage as a traditional desk, it can make your day more mobile and save space.

Article Kera Coffee Table

a couch with a coffee tableArticle

Why It Matters: Article is making outdoor furniture cool with its retro-inspired designs, like this coffee table that’s at home in the living room or on the patio.

The Big Picture: The DTC furniture brand Article is known for modern, high-quality designs at relatively reasonable prices. And its spring release โ€œThe 70s Editโ€ offers a chic retro throwback makeover for your outdoor space. The funky, ceramic tiled table shown above is simple yet unique and โ€” just as importantly โ€” absurdly resistant to hurricanes and coffee stains. And don’t worry, while it may look like it weighs about two tons, it actually comes in at a manageable 141 pounds.

today in gear december 19 2023 an aline cabin two snowboarders are walking towardsYeti

Congratulations are in order for the team behind the first ever pole-to-pole expedition powered by an eclectic vehicle. On December 15th, Chris and Julie Ramsey completed the 17,000-mile journey in a Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE which was modified slightly to ensure the mission was a success. Still, the couple had to make the journey in 150-200 mile segments to allow the car to recharge frequently. This charging necessity actually resulted in new EV charging stations being installed throughout Central and South America, which will power locals for years to come.

Today weโ€™re taking a look at a pocket watch for the modern times, a non-alcoholic brew for craft beer fans and a hand-knit sportswear release. This is Today in Gear.

VW Is Coming to Its Senses With Its Infotainment. As a Longtime Owner and Fan, I’m Glad

It looks like Volkswagen is about to fix the biggest issue with its modern cars.

volkswagen interior from youtube videoOnly Electric

I’ve owned Volkswagens for more than 10 years. The first car I bought as an adult was a used 2008 two-door VW Rabbit (a.k.a. Golf) hatchback. I upgraded to a used 2016 Golf Sportswagen when my family began to expand. But in the intervening years, I’ve gone from a VW proponent to a bit of a skeptic. When looking for a new car now, it’s tough to say there’s a VW that’s even on my radar.

See, here’s the thing: Volkswagen has dramatically shifted its priorities and choices since I was last in the market. The brand has deemphasized building driver’s cars on a budget and now builds predominately spacious and soft SUVs for American tastes โ€” cars it’s hard to be an enthusiast about. But even the cars I still like have a glaring weakness: the interior.

vw id4VW

VW’s current “digital cockpit” is a nightmare

Whether it’s the ID.4, the Golf GTI or the upcoming ID. Buzz, VW has shifted to a new digital cockpit concept. The interiors don’t go full Tesla, thankfully, but they lean heavily on the touchscreen and swap out physical buttons and dials for haptic ones. Most importantly โ€” and most annoyingly โ€” the effort has been poorly executed.

The remnant haptic controls and sliders are far from ergonomically wise. They make vital functions challenging to use while operating the vehicle, And that’s if you can see the controls with the non-existing backlighting. And that’s before we get to more specific quibbles, like putting a touch-sensitive heated steering wheel button right next to where your palm rests on the GTI.

Compounding that issue is the touchscreen itself. Iterations of the software I’ve tested have been laggy, hard to see without taking your eyes completely off the road (all the buttons are in one color, with thin line graphics delineating them), and just downright unintuitive. My drive partner and I had to ask for help to adjust the fan in the 2024 Atlas โ€” a process that required diving into multiple sub-menus.

The interior VW sells as tech-forward feels both annoying and โ€” unlike VWs of years past โ€” cheap.

https://www.youtube.com/watch

But it looks like VW is about to fix its interiors

Volkswagen has offered a peek at the ID.2all concept’s interior. The ID2.all is VW’s new affordable EV, which is probably not coming to America. But VW told Autocar it shows off a “new approach for all models.” The concept mercifully displays a row of physical toggle switches below the screen for controlling vital functions like temperature regulation. And, importantly, those switches are backlit.

It’s unclear when Volkswagen will begin rolling this out to the rest of the lineup; it has been shown in concept form in one interior, and a new interior would likely have to come with a new model or a mid-cycle refresh. But we can be hopeful it will end up in the new electric GTI, if not several models before that.

Today in Gear: Start Your Week Here

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and news from Gear Patrol Studios.

today in gear december 18 2023 esr 15w magnetic wireless car charger mount with cryoboostESR

Whatโ€™s ahead for Apple? Look to Android, says Ian Carlos Campbell over at Inverse. In an intriguing article, Campbell lays out how Apple dovetails its advances with Android โ€” and why thatโ€™s been a good thing for users.

โ€œItโ€™s been commonly accepted that Apple arrives late to ideas popularized by other platforms like Android so it can apply its signature level of polish and deep integration to its hardware and software,โ€ Campbell writes. โ€œIn this way, Apple stays current (relatively) while keeping the implementation and look of new features distinctly Apple.โ€ This is of course describing a normal, healthy relationship between competitors in our modern tech world. And, as Campbell notes, that dynamic looks to continue into the near future.

Today weโ€™re taking a look at ostrich-and-goat cowboy boots, an aprรจs-ski ball cap, candles from Kyoto and more. This is Today in Gear.

The 10 Best Gym Shoes, Wearables and Supplements of 2023

In this year’s GP100, sweat science once again broke down barriers โ€” and enabled athletes of all kinds to do the same.

Two hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds. That’s all it took for Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa to finish September’s Berlin Marathon, crushing the previous world record by more than two minutes. On her feet? A pair of Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1s, some of the most advanced running shoes to date.

While fancy footwear is only one factor in Assefa’s dominance, it is yet another example of how cutting-edge gear enables the human race to go ever faster, higher, stronger. This year, as the GP100 celebrates innovation, fitness breakthroughs contribute to all kinds of spectacular feats, helping a vast array of people work out harder, recover quicker, track their progress better and so much more. Like Assefa herself, the 10 products here have broken away from the pack.

Nike Aerogami Storm-FIT ADV Jacket

a person wearing a jacketNike

Why It Matters: The Nike Aerogami Jacket defies convention, showcasing an ever-changing venting system that detects the accumulation of sweat on the skin and automatically opens to allow for cooling.

The Big Picture: Conventional wisdom says waterproof and breathability are on opposite sides of the spectrum. All other things being equal, the more waterproof a jacket is, the less breathable, and vice versa. Nike’s Aerogami Jacket begs to differ, armed with a groundbreaking dynamic venting system. Thanks to a moisture-reactive film, tiny winged vents, strategically located around high-heat areas like the chest and upper back, can sense sweat building up on the skin and automatically open to let your skin breathe. They can also close back up as you cool down, leaving conventional wisdom scratching its head.

Reebok Nano X3 Training Shoes

a black tennis shoeReebok

Why It Matters: Reebok’s smartest Nano yet combines the optimal stability of a cross-training shoe with the plush cushioning of a running shoe, allowing wearers to lift and sprint with equal aplomb.

The Big Picture: Quality cross-training shoes offer a stable and firm platform to support the foot through varied exercises. Reliable running shoes provide a comfortable, cushioned underfoot experience. Athletes seeking to both things in the same workout typically have to sacrifice one or the other โ€” until now. The Reebok Nano X3 splits the difference via a brand-new adaptive Lift and Run Chassis System. A dome-shaped piece of thermoplastic polyurethane embedded in the midsole compresses under pressure, enhancing stability during lifting, and subsequently softens during running or jumping to provide additional cushioning. Finally, the best of both worlds.

Maurten Bicarb System

a man using maurten creamMaurten

Why It Matters: Maurten’s exclusive formulation enables athletes to consume elevated levels of sodium bicarbonate, a legal endurance booster, without adverse GI effects.

The Big Picture: Since the dawn of sports, runners and cyclists have been looking for an edge. One of the more researched legal supplements is sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda), which neutralizes harmful acidity levels in the muscles to delay fatigue. Unfortunately, it also wreaks havoc on the gastrointestinal system. Maurten, a leader in high-end sports nutrition, developed a proprietary way to take sodium bicarbonate. In scientific terms, a biopolymer matrix holds carbohydrates to encapsulate the sodium bicarbonate without GI distress. In athletic terms, Maurten’s Hydrogel Technology lets you fuel up and kick ass in long-distance contests, without having to race to the port-a-potty.

Keen WK400 Walking Shoe

people wearing yellow running shoesKeen

Why It Matters: These pedestrian-specific kicks employ a rockered sole and full-length nylon plate to put a literal spring in your step.

The Big Picture: If youโ€™re like most people, your walking shoes are just running sneakers. Keen wants to change that. Specifically designed for walking, the WK400 boasts a rockered sole that rolls your foot from heel to toe, reducing the energy needed to push off. Meanwhile, a full-length nylon plate embedded in a lively midsole adds stability without sacrificing a soft underfoot experience. (Similar elements are present in performance running shoes, but optimized for, you know, actually running.) If you experience foot pain while walking, or just want every step to be more pleasant, the WK400s are hands down the best and most comfortable shoes we’ve tried.

Therabody Theragun PRO Plus

a woman sitting on a tennis court using a massage gun on her legTherabody

Why It Matters: The Theragun Pro Plus represents the next level of massage gun performance, combining powerful percussion with cutting-edge infrared light and heat therapy.

The Big Picture: These days, massage guns are a dime a dozen. But massage guns with this much power and technology come around once in a blue moon. With a best-in-class 16-millimeter amplitude and high 60-pound stall force, the Theragun Pro Plus is by far the best massage gun you can buy. Beyond its insane stats, a heated head attachment loosens up stiff muscles, while LED infrared light therapy stimulates circulation and boosts healing. You can also connect with an app via Bluetooth to access guided recovery routines and soothing breathing tours. Yes, it’s pricy, but youโ€™d be hard-pressed to find an elite recovery tool with damn near as many modalities as the finest Leatherman.

Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1

a man runningAdidas

Why It Matters: If the jaw-dropping price doesn’t get your attention, the speed-friendly blend of incredibly light weight and funky, forward-motion-boosting geometry surely will.

The Big Picture: These kicks made headlines for their $500 price tag. But once Tigst Assefaโ€™s pair reached the Berlin Marathon finish line in less than 2 hours and 12 minutes, we knew Adidas had created something special. Ditching the sockliner and adding a grooveless-but-grippy outsole trims the weight to an insane 4.87 ounces (less than a D battery). Incorporating non-compression-molded Lightstrike Pro foam into a bonkers forefoot rocker that makes up 60 percent of the length encourages unprecedented forward motion. And selling them for a borderline obscene amount leaves us all wondering, how much is a PR really worth?

Coros Pace 3 GPS Sport Watch

a man and a woman running on a road with trees in the backgroundCoros

Why It Matters: An already elite GPS watch adds more accurate GPS โ€” and a battery delivering an eye-popping amount of continuous GPS use.

The Big Picture: With loads of improvements over its predecessor, the Coros 3 stakes its claim to the title of best everyday GPS watch. An updated satellite chipset featuring the choice of dual-frequency ensures precise GPS data reliability, even in densely populated urban areas such as New York and Chicago, where there were GPS issues previously. Perhaps even more impressive? Adding 8 hours more of continuous GPS usage, meaning a whopping 38 hours of continuous GPS use (in standard GPS mode). You also get 24 days of continuous regular usage to play around with a top-notch touchscreen, wifi, music and a pulse ox meter.

Cionic Neural Sleeve

a woman using a neural sleeve on her legCionic

Why It Matters: This high-tech wrap transmits electrical impulses to leg muscles, fostering contractions that enable folks with conditions like multiple sclerosis to walk with greater ease, fluidity and endurance.

The Big Picture: Developed by a former Apple employee seeking better walking assistance options for a daughter with cerebral palsy, the Cionic Neural Sleeve is a one-of-a-kind wearable that uses technology to correct mobility issues. Advanced sensors in the fabric track muscle movement and limb positioning in real-time โ€” and deliver precise electrical stimulation, triggering the necessary contractions in coordination with a person’s gait cycle. Studies have show that 94 percent of users experience increased ankle dorsiflexion at heel strike with nine degrees of improvement in range of motion. Available only with a prescription, the sleeve offers more than hope; it offers results.

KingSmith WR1 Foldable Water Rowing Machine

a woman working out on a rowing machineKingSmith

Why It Matters: This full-size rowing machine folds down to a third of its length, delivering a great cardio and strength workout you can stash in the corner.

The Big Picture: Having a home cardio machine isnโ€™t an option for many because of the space it takes up, and letโ€™s face it, unless you have a dedicated gym room, these bulky units can be an eyesore. Now, from the people who brought you TikTok’s favorite folding WalkingPad, comes the good-looking, nicely priced KingSmith WR1 Foldable Water Rowing Machine, which folds down to the size of a 26-inch suitcase. It may not be the most high-tech unit out there, but the seat’s comfy, the resistance is adjustable and, most importantly, it doesn’t turn your living room into “the rowing room.”

Oobli Sweet Iced Tea

a person holding two cansOobli Tea

Why It Matters: Oobli’s delicious iced teas harbor a healthy twist โ€” the sweetness comes not from sugar but from “sweet proteins,โ€ with none of the negative side effects of artificial alternatives.

The Big Picture: Found in oubli, a West African fruit, sweet proteins taste like sugar but don’t impact your body the same way. They work by activating the same taste receptors sugar does, but the digestion and metabolism in your body result in zero or neutral effects on your blood sugar, insulin levels and gut microbiome. Oobli puts that magic to work in 60-calorie iced teas with tasty flavors we have tried and adore, including mango, lemon, peach and a new “Arnie P.” half tea/half lemonade. Which means you can finally slake your thirst for sugar without jeopardizing your waistline.

The 14 Best Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles and Campers of 2023

This year’s GP100 saw iconic vehicles reinvent themselves for a new era, while long-awaited concepts finally came to fruition.

Yes, the motoring world is converting from internal combustion to battery-electric power. But 2023 highlighted how that transition is happening in fits and starts. It turns out, the interregnum between gas and electric in the present still offers plenty to get excited about.

The year didn’t just see an onslaught of cool new electric cars but innovation happening with icons like the Toyota Tacoma reinventing themselves as hybrids โ€” and even a few intriguing last gasps of internal combustion for the road. For good measure, we also met burgeoning new segments like the midsize pickup and electric-powered camping vehicles.

Acura Integra Type S

a car driving through a tunnelAcura

Why It Matters: The Civic Type R is a purpose-built track monster. The Integra Type S refines it into a car an adult could actually own.

The Big Picture: The Honda Civic Type R is impressive. But owning one forces you to make some compromises, whether itโ€™s the moderate discomfort, the quirkiness or having to drive around with a goofy wing in real life. The Integra Type S eliminates the compromises. It takes everything except the power down a notch โ€” from 11 to 10. It offers normal seats and a shift lever you can easily grip without driving gloves. It looks surprisingly more like an aggressive sports car. And itโ€™s a bonafide luxury sedan with a 6-speed manual, in a world where such a thing is approaching unicorn status.

Airstream Trade Wind

a trailer parked in a fieldAirstream

Why It Matters: By packing extra battery and solar charging power into one of its most popular trailer sizes, Airstream has made a camper even better suited to off-grid adventures.

The Big Picture: For nearly a century, Airstream travel trailers have been helping Americans lead their best lives, but the new Trade Wind brings even more comfort to the party. The Trade Wind packs a lithium-ion battery potent enough to run the A/C and microwave simultaneously, while the 600-watt solar panels can sustain an ample charge as long as you can find a sunny place to camp, enabling owners to enjoy many of the luxuries of a campsite off the grid โ€” and without a noisy generator running in the background. A 3-inch lift kit over other 25-foot Airstreams enables it to travel down the unbeaten path more easily, while inside, thereโ€™s generous sleeping space for up to four. Itโ€™s the perfect home away from home โ€ฆ or from anything else.

BMW M2

a car driving on a roadBMW

Why It Matters: Combining a manual gearbox, a potent straight-six and lively handling in a tidy package, the M2 keeps the faith for the BMW.

The Big Picture: While BMW has long sold itself as the maker of The Ultimate Driving Machine, recent decisions โ€” moving towards electrification; choosing luxury over sportiness for models like the XM โ€” have made its commitment to that ideal seem questionable.

The M2, though, proves that philosophy is still alive at the Bavarian Motor Works. Itโ€™s basically all the best parts of the M3 and M4, repackaged in a tighter, (arguably) better-looking package and sold at a 20 percent discount. Itโ€™s an absolute blast to drive, boasting the tossable handling and exquisite power that have long defined the best BMWs.

Buy one now while theyโ€™re cheap; theyโ€™re only going to get more popular as the car world goes electric.

Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon

a truck parked on a rocky mountainGMC

Why It Matters: The midsize truck segment has grown far more mature than it was last decade, and GM delivered with its most premium, sophisticated and capable small truck offerings to date.

The Big Picture: Midsize trucks are a far bigger deal than they were in 2017, and GMโ€™s all-new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon reflect the shift. The trucks look different. All Canyons and non-base Colorados receive a wider track and a two-inch suspension lift. A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder can pump out up to 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. And GM is taking the fight โ€” a fight GM has shied away from with the Wrangler/Bronco and Raptor/TRX โ€” to its competitors with the premium, off-road accessories-laden GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition.

Hyundai Ioniq 6

a silver car parked in front of a buildingHyundai

Why It Matters: Hyundai followed up its World Car of the Year-winning Ioniq 5 with the Ioniq 6 โ€ฆ and won the award again, delivering Tesla and Lucid-like range at a seriously affordable price.

The Big Picture: When it comes to Hyundai Motoring Group’s 2023 updates, Kia took a more conventional route, following up its E-GMP standout EV6 with the EV9 three-row crossover. Hyundai took a different tack with the Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6. The latter is a weird, swoopy sedan with a super-sleek 0.219 drag coefficient. It delivers a top range of 361 miles, third-best behind the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S. It offers a comfortable and relaxed driving experience while doing so. And in a world where EV tech remains super expensive, Hyundai starts the bidding at just $42,250.

Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato

a black sports car parked on a road with rocky hills in the backgroundLamborghini

Why It Matters: The Huracan will soon ride into the sunset. But before it does, Lamborghini is dropping one last crazy version in the form of an off-road rally car.

The Big Picture: The words โ€œoff-roadโ€ and โ€œsupercarโ€ seem almost antonymic. But crazy ideas are always in vogue at Lamborghini.

Lambo teased the Huracan Sterrato in concept form back in 2019 and finally released a production model earlier this year to great success.

The Sterrato boasts a raised suspension that’s softer than a regular Huracan, custom all-terrain tires (including an optional spare that rides on a roof rack) and a roof-mounted snorkel air intake to feed the howling 5.2-liter V10. The result isnโ€™t just an absolute blast to drive on dirt roads โ€” itโ€™s also better to drive in the city, on the open road, or pretty much anywhere else besides a race track, thanks to its more forgiving ride. Hereโ€™s hoping Lambo keeps this combination alive for the Huracanโ€™s future replacement.

Lexus TX

a white car parked in front of a buildingLexus

Why It Matters: Lexus has been selling SUVs for a while. It finally built one thatโ€™s the right size and package for modern families.

The Big Picture: Lexus has sort of a crazy SUV lineup, with the RX covering the vast gulf between tiny UX and NX Crossovers and hulking body-on-frame Land Cruisers with the GX and LX. For 2024, the TX joins the mix. Itโ€™s a three-row, unibody crossover, with a package families want and need. The TX offers two hybrid options that balance performance and efficiency: a 404 horsepower PHEV with 33 miles of EV range and a 366 hp conventional hybrid earning an estimated 27 mpg. Either way, adults can use its third row in reasonable comfort. Lexus may have a vibrant electric future coming with solid-state batteries, but the TX is the car Lexus needed right now.

Mazda CX-90 Turbo S

a car on a roadMazda

Why It Matters: Mazda’s flashy new flagship SUV makes debuting a new gas engine in 2023 feel modern and paying $60,000 for a Mazda feel like a sensible move.

The Big Picture: Mazda replaced its flagship CX-9 crossover with the CX-90 for 2024, and itโ€™s excellent. The CX-90 isnโ€™t dramatically bigger and it looks sort of bulbous in the rear. But it packs a brand-new 3.3-liter inline-six motor thatโ€™s buttery smooth (or a not-quite-as-smooth plug-in hybrid option). And while not particularly sporty, it boasts a strong blend of Mazdaโ€™s patented Jinba Ittai driving dynamics and a luxurious interior that makes the car feel more expensive than it is. Some of our relatives did not know they were in the market for a Mazda before scoping out the new CX-90. We suspect a lot of three-row crossover buyers will end up in the same (metaphorical) boat.

Toyota Tacoma

a car parked on a dirt roadToyota

Why It Matters: Toyota didnโ€™t need to upgrade the Tacoma to sell oodles of them. It now sets the standard for midsize trucks.

The Big Picture: Toyota could have kept on selling Tacomas based on reputation with a slight refresh. Instead, the brand followed the lead of the Tundra and Sequoia with a comprehensive overhaul โ€” and itโ€™s now the most modern and capable all-around midsize truck you can get. The Tacomaโ€™s on-road manners improve radically with a new platform, a coil-sprung rear suspension and the upgrade to a modern 8-speed transmission. Itโ€™s supremely off-road capable with a new Trailhunter overlanding trim joining the TRD Pro and a beefed-up TRD Off-Road model. Last but not least, a new four-cylinder hybrid powertrain with 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque should set a new benchmark for performance and efficiency.

Toyota Prius Prime

a silver car on a roadToyota

Why It Matters: The Toyota Prius was Americaโ€™s OG eco car before it was cool. And with a new generation bringing some serious aesthetic, performance and (yes, of course) efficiency upgrades, it may actually be cool.

The Big Picture: Few cars have cultivated a more distinct vibe than the Toyota Prius. Inveterately dorky-looking and prioritizing hyper-miling over driving verve, it has been the car for people who donโ€™t like cars but need one. Until now …

The Prius Prime plug-in hybrid looks like a spaceship and packs 220 horsepower. With 44 miles of EV range, it can function more or less as an electric car for most people doing local driving โ€” while maintaining road trip flexibility. And starting at just $32,675, itโ€™s cheaper than almost every electric car around.

Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness

a car parked on a dirt road by a tree and waterSubaru

Why It Matters: The Crosstrek was already the best small crossover on the road. With the Wilderness package providing more ground clearance than the Land Cruiser, it ascends into a serious off-roader for less than $35,000.

The Big Picture: Subaruโ€™s Crosstrek has been a hit from its inception as a smaller, cheaper Outback. The new Wilderness treatment is the Crosstrek but enhanced. It sports a skid plate, all-terrain tires and an upgraded suspension. Its 9.3 inches of ground clearance are more than a Toyota Land Cruiser and just a hair shy of the Jeep Wrangler.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is more optimally proportioned for tackling trails than its larger Wilderness brethren. Even better, the features that make it off-road practical โ€” easy-to-clean seats and wide-access openings โ€” also make it a great buy for young, families and, yes, older empty nesters.

Honda Accord Hybrid

a black car driving on a roadHonda

Why It Matters: Honda boldly ditched the driver-preferred V6 for a less powerful hybrid. But it’s still one of the best all-around cars (and driver’s cars) you can buy โ€” if you’re willing to entertain a front-wheel-drive sedan.

The Big Picture: Honda has dropped both the V6 and the manual transmission from the Accord lineup. The driverโ€™s car for the eleventh generation is now the Accord Hybrid, with 48 fewer horsepower. Though you wouldnโ€™t expect it on paper, itโ€™s still every bit as great. The Accord Hybrid is quick, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. It handles sublimely in normal and spirited driving. Itโ€™s practical and roomy with ample second-row space and a huge trunk. Even driving it not particularly efficiently, we achieved nearly 40 mpg. Bottom line: The Accord Hybrid is probably the car you should buy, even if youโ€™re probably going to get a crossover.

Mercedes Benz E-Class

a car parked on a dirt roadMercedes

Why It Matters: Cars of the future will be as much tech devices as means of conveyance. Mercedes’s tech-forward new E-Class sedan previews what that connected future will look like.

The Big Picture: The E-Class is a benchmark vehicle for Mercedes and the luxury auto industry writ large. What will the automotive future look like when the car is yet one more connected smart device? The E-Class delivers a vision for it. All your sensory needs are succored with massaging seats, 4D surround sound and crystal clear displays on the immersive coast-to-coast MBUX screen. It has app integrations for TikTok and Zoom and the first glimmerings of AI virtual assistance. Oh, and thereโ€™s still a silky 3.0-liter inline-six with a pillow-like air suspension if youโ€™re into actually driving the car.

Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650

a woman on a motorcycleRoyal Enfield

Why It Matters: Sometimes, how a winning product is marketed can blaze a trail all on its own. Such is the case with one motorcycle brandโ€™s understated but outsized outreach to 51.1 percent of the US population.

The Big Picture: The Super Meteorโ€™s 648cc parallel-twin engine places it squarely in the middleweight cruiser division, but the bike punches well above that class. Impressive in testing were its nimble handling, easy acceleration and tip-to-tail good looks. Still, what stood out most at the Dallas launch was the unprecedented number of female riders (seven, including the one above) on our media ride. Combined with beginner-friendly geometry, an approachable base price ($6,999) and surprisingly diverse promo materials โ€” not to mention Royal Enfieldโ€™s continued sponsorship of the awesome, all-female Build.Train.Race program โ€” the real breakthrough here is kicking down motorcyclingโ€™s barriers to entry.

The Best Leather Sofas and Couches You Can Buy

Your living room deserves an upgrade.

When it comes to products that live inside your home, few are larger or more expensive than a sofa. The living room sofa may also be the most-used product for many of us. Between watching TV, taking naps, general lounging and โ€” increasingly โ€” working remotely, a lot of people are spending countless hours on their couch.

So, as a major financial investment, the visual centerpiece of our living rooms and something we’re constantly using day in and day out, doesn’t it make sense to buy a sofa that’s truly great? And if you want a great sofa, there’s no beating a leather sofa. Below, you’ll find the best leather sofas we’ve tested.

Products in the Guide

How We Tested

collage of 4 different couches in living roomsGear Patrol Staff

We know a thing or two about sofa brands, so we called in leather sofas from some of our favorite names in furniture (except in one case, where a staffer already owned the sofa we wanted to test) and tested them in our own living rooms. We took into account the sofas’ delivery process and assembly while noting how comfortable they were for lounging and napping and how they held up with the wear and tear of normal use.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

Best Overall Leather Sofa

Pros

  • Stylish mid-century modern design
  • Simple delivery and assembly takes just one person
  • Incredibly comfortable โ€” you will fall asleep on it
  • Leather is smooth and beautiful

Cons

  • Cushion tufts need to be cleaned frequently
  • Leather scratches easily

I prefer a mid-century modern aesthetic when it comes to my decor, and Castlery’s Madison fit the bill perfectly. While not mimicking any specific designer couch from the era, it nails that generic, mid-century sofa look I was going for thanks to its clean lines, sleek peg legs, thin arms, round bolster pillows and tufted bench seat. It’s a beautiful couch and has been a compliment-generating machine whenever I have guests over.

Delivery of the sofa could not have been much easier. It’s delivered mostly put together in one long box, and a trio of delivery men brought it up three flights of stairs and into my living room. It was up to me to unpack and assemble the couch, which I did easily by myself in about 15 minutes. Unwrapping all of the plastic and styrofoam is the biggest hassle, the couch itself simply requires screwing on five legs and arranging the cushions.

The Madison is comfortable. Very comfortable. The bench seat has the perfect amount of cushioning that’s both soft and supportive, and since it’s one long section, there are no gaps to fall into between seats. The back cushions are loose, but because they’re so large they don’t move around much, and they’re extra soft and great for sinking into. It also includes a pair of bolster pillows, which are great at protecting you from the hard-ish sides of the sofa and allow you to forego throw pillows if you want to keep a minimalist look. The sofa is so comfy and welcoming that I’ve developed a habit of falling asleep on the couch most nights and then waking up in a daze in the wee hours of the morning, at which time I begrudgingly make my way to the bedroom.

a cat on a leather sofa
My cat admires her handiwork — if you have felines, they will scratch this sofa.
Johnny Brayson

The leather used on the sofa is buttery smooth and smells amazing. I love the way it looks too, as it has visible grain and is quite natural looking. The natural charm is shown off most around the biscuit tufting of the seat, as here the leather is stretched and wrinkled in a way that’s quite aesthetically pleasing to my eye.

The tufting is also the source of one of my two beefs with this sofa. The indentations caused by the tufting in the seat may look stylish, but they are also absolute magnets for dirt and crumbs. They’re easy enough to clean โ€” just run a handheld vacuum over them โ€” but they seem to fill up with debris quickly. Or maybe I’m just a slob.

My other beef has to do with the leather itself. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the leather. But it scratches very easily. Within hours of setting up the sofa, I noticed a couple of small peeling punctures on the seat. These soon began to appear elsewhere on the sofa, most notably on the back. Thankfully, these punctures and scratches weren’t caused spontaneously, they were the work of my cats. I can’t really fault the leather for the damage the cats do to it, but I do wish it held up better against their destruction. So just know that if you have cats, this sofa will show scratches.

Other than that, this sofa has been an absolute dream. It’s affordable, beautiful and by far the most comfortable sofa I’ve owned. It isn’t feline-proof, but then again, what sofa is? โ€” Johnny Brayson, Associate Editor

Best Budget Leather Sofa

Pros

  • Easy to disassemble and move
  • Leather ages nicely and blemishes only improve the look
  • You can fall asleep on it easily

Cons

  • Cushions get slouchy and need frequent attention
  • Needs throw pillows for the hard sides
  • Can feel a little cramped even with just two people

Yes, our budget pick is only a hundred bucks cheaper than our top pick. But the truth is, you really can’t spend much less on a leather sofa while still getting something worth buying.

We bought the Article Nirvana Sofa in early 2018 when my wife and I were living in a shoebox apartment in New York City. We needed a specific size of couch to fit the limited layout we had, and this sofa fit the bill. Delivery was super easy thanks to the logistics team from Article; they hoofed the box up three flights of stairs and right into our living room.

Unpacking and assembling the couch was easy, but breaking down the box was not. Imagine tearing down a 6-foot x 3-foot thick cardboard box in a Manhattan studio and attempting to cut the cardboard down small enough to fit into the clear trashbags your super provided to then throw into the mouse-infested streetside trash bins. I think people who order this couch in the burbs will have a much easier time with the assembly aftermath.

leather sofa
The Dakota leather used by Article looks great once it gets some age on it.
Joe Tornatzky

The couch has been solid over the nearly six years we’ve had it. We’ve moved multiple times, and the sofa’s easy disassembly and perfect size and weight make it a dream to get through doorways and jigsawed into moving trucks. The cushions need to be swapped to different positions every now and then as they tend to sag and require frequent fluffing, but even they have held their own quite well.

I have to say that one of the stars of the couch has been the leather. A lot of times, when spending under $2,000 on a leather couch, the leather you’re getting is not of the greatest quality. But that’s certainly not the case with Articla’s Dakota leather. It’s aged beautifully, like an worn-in baseball mit, and it wears its spills well as stylish blemishes. There are a couple of scratches from our toddler, but we like the story it tells, and any leather is going to scratch at the end of the day. All in all, I would recommend this couch for any family that has good taste and lives with a small footprint. โ€” Joe Tornatzky, Creative Director

Best Leather Sectional

Pros

  • Throwback aesthetic that's stunning
  • Surprisingly simple and clever assembly
  • Modular build allows you to expand/change the layout as desired in the future
  • Solid build and nice quality leather

Cons

  • You're at the whim of FedEx delivery people
  • There's some trial and error to find the smoothest assembly methods
  • Modular build is harder to move in one piece once assembled

Burrow offers a safer, easier and more stylish approach to modular sofas. While many competitors connect modules with alligator clips, Burrow uses custom molded hardware to screw each section together, ensuring a solid connection. What’s more, the pieces ship via FedEx and arrive ready to be assembled so you can quickly assemble a new sofa or add new modules to an existing one.

The brand’s newest sofa, the Mambo, is inspired by classic European designs with a large blocky shape, minimal floor clearance and wide comfortable seats. But, because it’s modular, the configurations are endless. Customers can choose a layout between three and eight pieces and decide whether they want high or low arms. Additionally, they can choose to add an ottoman or lumbar pillows as needed.

Having a larger living room, I opted for the L-shape 7-piece sofa. Though the FedEx delivery is relatively painless, you are ultimately at the whims of the carrier, so be aware of that during peak shipping seasons. Assembly of the sofa is actually pretty simple: each back or arm attaches to the base cushion with three long hand screws. It takes a little finessing but is a very solid attachment once secured. After each cushion has a back and/or side attached, you connect it to the other modules with connectors that hook around adjacent legs. These snap into place and ensure the modules won’t budge.

leather sofa
Though the Mambo is made up of individual modules, you’d never know from looking at it.
John Zientek

The Mambo has deep seats that are great for leaning back and relaxing. Unlike other blocky-style sofas, the back cushions have a curve that encourages reclining and lounging. If you’d prefer to sit more upright, the lumbar pillows are a nice addition. Out of the box, the cushions are comfortable and firm โ€” you don’t sink into them and they feel like they’ll hold their shape nicely for the foreseeable future โ€” perfect for lounging, napping and sitting with friends or family.

The leather is smooth and taut, and numerous guests have commented on how nice it looks and feels. During assembly and initial use, there haven’t been any notable scuffs, scrapes or marks. Each module has a solid build, so the final sofa layout is heavy when assembled, making sure it won’t shift or move when guests sit down.

Because the Mambo is a blocky sofa, it is an anchor in the room and takes up more visual space than other styles. If you like the aesthetic, it’s hard to beat. In my space, it’s a perfect fit and delivers both style and comfort. It’s a notably tasteful design and stands out among other sofas you can order online. I was happy to see that the final build matched the photos online to a T โ€” what you see is definitely what you get.

If you like blocky, stylish sofas but want something modular, this is your best bet. You can customize your layout to your space and needs, and even adjust if you move or want to build it out. Unlike pre-built sofas, the assembly takes a little extra work to ensure everything is lined up perfectly and secured, but once it is, you won’t be able to tell the difference. If compelling layouts, deep seats, comfortable backs and corners, beautiful leather and the option to change things up sounds good to you, the Mambo is worth investing in. โ€” John Zientek, Managing Editor

Best Vegan Leather Sofa

Pros

  • Extremely smooth delivery and easy to move
  • Minimalist, clean design
  • Comfortable without anything extra
  • Perfect size for a nap

Cons

  • Light sag/distortion in the cushions after prolonged use

Starting with delivery, the Crate & Barrel White Glove Delivery removed all the hassle around getting a new couch and allowed me to start enjoying the new piece within 15 minutes. The friendly, attentive team wore shoe covers in my home, protected my hardwood floors, took care of all the setup in record time and took away the packaging, so all I had to do was sit down and relax. My partner and I were easily able to move the couch around our space after the delivery team was gone to find the perfect spot for it, so if we had to move it ourselves, it would not be a struggle.

My first impression of the sofa was exceptional; it has clean lines, the vegan leather is buttery soft and the cushions have the perfect amount of flex. At 7 feet wide, the Wells Sofa is a great size for a small living room and in a larger space would be well-complemented by a couple of chairs. It seats two people super comfortably, three to four with closer quarters. The design is minimalist, so it can easily be integrated into any style space.

faux leather sofa
You’ll likely experience some sagging in the cushions, but overall this sofa has a high-end feel.
Erica Givans

You barely need extra pillows with this couch, as the adjustable arm cushions are great to lean up against, throw your arm over, or use as a headrest for a well-deserved nap. You may notice that the back cushions slip down a bit, pushing the seat forward in some positions as they arenโ€™t secured by anything but a little friction, but that’s an easy fix and doesnโ€™t affect the comfort of the sofa.

After two months, I can tell where we sit the most on the couch as thereโ€™s a bit of a distortion in the cushions, but otherwise, the sofa looks as good as the day it arrived … even with a little bit of cat hair on it. โ€” Erica Givans, Content Strategist

Other Leather Sofas We Considered

Not every sofa could be called in for testing. The following models all drew consideration from our team, but without hands-on testing, we aren’t able to fully recommend them.

What to Look for in a Leather Sofa

Buying furniture online can sometimes feel like a challenge since you can’t actually sit on or feel the item you’re purchasing. This is especially important when shopping for a big-ticket item like a leather sofa. Make a mistake, and you’re looking at a considerable hassle to get that sofa out of your home and returned. So, to keep your risk level low, here are a few things to look out for when shopping for a leather sofa online.

Delivery and Assembly: Sofas are big and heavy, so you’ll want to check and see how your furniture will be delivered and what the assembly process looks like. Look at the sofa’s dimensions and measure your own doorways, hallways, staircases and living room โ€” there’s nothing worse than having a piece of furniture show up at your door only to learn it’s too big to get into your home. You’ll also want to see what kind of delivery options are offered, and how much they cost. A white-glove delivery where the sofa is assembled for you and all packaging is hauled away can save you a lot of headaches, but may cost a small fortune. Be sure to closely examine your options.

Quality Leather: You’ll want real leather for your sofa, meaning either top-grain or full-grain. The former is more affordable and more uniform in appearance while being slightly less durable. The latter is more expensive but can take more of a beating and has a more varied appearance that some people value. You’ll also want to avoid bonded leather, which is made up of a layer of leather glued onto cheaper fabric. This can peel and flake away and won’t last nearly as long as real leather.

Construction: There’s more that goes into a sofa besides the leather you actually come into contact with. You’ll also want to check out the frame and cushions as well. Most sites should give you an idea of what sort of comfort level is offered by the cushions, whether they’re sink-in, supportive or somewhere in between, and you’ll need to consider what kind of lounging experience you want. You should also take note of how the frame is constructed. Look for frames made of durable materials like solid wood and plywood, and avoid anything made from MDF or particle board that will break down in a short amount of time.

BMW M4 Convertible Vs. Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet: A 4-Seat Droptop Showdown

Two performance-oriented, all-wheel-drive inline-six-powered German convertibles face off.

a collage of two carsWill Sabel Courtney

Times are tough for fans of convertibles these days. While they once numbered in the dozens in new car showrooms, these days, there are only a handful of droptops to be found in 2023โ€“2024 model year lineups โ€” and even fewer if you exclude the open-top SUV likes the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

Still, if you have a bit more cash to spend, you have a few more options. (Isn’t that always the case?) Many luxury carmakers still offer at least one convertible, even if it may not sell as well as all those fancy crossovers. But if you want four usable seats and serious speed, your options grow limited again. Porsche, Audi and Lexus are out; so are the BMW Z4 and the Mercedes-AMG SL-Class. And since I’m assuming you don’t have the quarter-million-plus bucks for a Bentley Continental GTC โ€” or if you do, you may want something a little less ostentatious โ€” that’s out, as well.

Which brings us to the two subjects of this piece. The BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG E 53 aren’t exactly the most natural of competitors, but in this day and age, they’re as close as you can come to direct droptop rivals from Mercedes and BMW. Both pack turbocharged inline-six engines, both have performance-tuned all-wheel-drive and both cost pretty much the same: the M4 Convertible starts at $90,595, while the E 53 Cabriolet starts at $91,500.

So on paper, these two seem like a solid matchup. But which is best in the real world? Well, I took each on a trip from New York to Vermont to see how each handles highway cruising, backroad blitzing and everything in-between.

BMW M4 Competition Convertible Vs. Mercedes-AMG E 53 Cabriolet: What We Think

While they may be similarly sized, closely priced and equally potent, the M4 and E 53 offer different driving experiences. The Bimmer is sharper and harder-edged, more excited to carve up corners and attack the road; the AMG is a bit softer, preferring to cruise at 7/10ths rather than roar around at 10/10th commitment. Still, either car is more than quick enough to dispatch most other rides on the road with ease, whether passing on straights or pulling away in the curves.

Both are comfortable and surprisingly usable, with plenty of space and cabins that feel every bit as secure as coupes when the top is raised. The M4 ekes out a win by doing more things โ€” being a sports car, a grand tourer, a daily driver โ€” just a little bit better than the E 53 … even if the Bimmer’s face still remains hard to look at.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

The E 53 is better-looking, but not by as much as you might think

By now, odds are good you’ve already formed your opinion of the BMW M3 and M4’s design. Some people find it compelling in its unabashed aggression; other people think it looks like an Angry Birds pig hooked on amphetamines and steroids. I think you can guess where I land on this matter. The army green paint of my test car certainly gave it a distinct look, but distinct and attractive are two very different ideas.

The E 53, by contrast, is much more unassuming โ€” even stylish, from some angles. Still, it’s hard not to feel as though it would look even better if Mercedes hadn’t given this generation of E-Class the midlife visual update that stripped some of the power and presence from the likes of the E 63 S. As it turns out, the ideal amount of visual belligerence for a performance-oriented convertible lies somewhere in-between the M4 and the E 53 … but it’s definitely closer to the Mercedes.

The M4 is much more fun to drive

Once you’re behind the wheel, though, the M4 proves its worth. It drives with all the grace, pace and panache we’ve come to expect from BMW’s M division, their occasional whiffs aside. The twin-turbo inline-six feels way punchier than its claimed 503 horsepower output would lead you to believe, especially considering the car’s 4,300-pound curb weight. It feels even more superb when you dial up the all-wheel-drive system, stability control and eight-speed automatic for max attack and pitch it down a back road as fast as you dare; if it weren’t for the wind in your face, you’d think this car was a rigid coupe. Yet while it’s taut and balanced, the M4 also doesn’t punish you with a harsh ride … at least, so long as you avoid the worst of the potholes.

The E 53 is no slowpoke, granted, but it feels a step behind the M4 when you drop the hammer and a step and a half behind when you tackle the turns. Pardon my double negative, but that’s not unexpected; after all, the E 53 โ€” which packs roughly 80 percent of the power of the M4 โ€” follows in the footsteps of what fans and journalists have often referred to with terms like “AMG Light” โ€” half-caf versions of the full-throated, traditionally-V8-powered full AMG models with their handbuilt engines and greater emphasis on performance.

That distinction certainly doesn’t mean as much in 2023 / 2024, what with V8-powered AMGs increasingly rare and four-cylinder-PHEVs and EVs taking up more and more roles in the Mercedes performance lineup. Besides, there’s little to complain about in the abstract here โ€” the E 53 is still sportier than most cars, while offering a pleasant ride to boot. It’s just not as much fun as the M4.

Both convertibles offer plenty of comfort inside

Should you stop at a light and happen to see a driver in the front seat of an M4 or E 53 in the lane next to you, don’t feel bad if you feel a pang of jealousy. Odds are good he or she is more comfortable than you. Both the Merc and the Bimmer offer delightful thrones up front, although the latter depends on you choosing the standard seats instead of the $4,500 M carbon buckets. Even on multi-hour driving stretches, I didn’t suffer from a whit of numb butt discomfort.

I will note, as an aside, that my M4 was actually a 2023 model year vehicle, which means that it came with the pre-facelift interior instead of the new post-life-cycle-update version found in all 2024 3 Series models. I’ve gone on record saying I prefer the previous layout, and while I found the ’23 M4’s interior more user-focused than the E 53’s setup, the updates pull them up to about parity, if not giving the edge to the AMG. Either way, though, there’s no disputing that the Merc’s dashboard and interior design look way nicer.

Neither car’s second row offers Maybach-like accommodations, but each set of two rear seats is roomy enough for an average-sized adult to sit behind another such person for an hour or so โ€” long enough to make it to dinner or to a meeting. And there’s an unexpected benefit of sitting in the back of a convertible instead of a sedan: no matter how tall you are, there’s plenty of headroom.

The Complete Guide to The James Brand: Every Knife, Explained

We break down one of the most popular brands in the world of knives and EDC, from the Carter to the Mehlville.

a flatlay photo of knives, a camera, camping gear, a shirt, sunglasses, and a cup of coffeeThe James Brand

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you wonโ€™t find on the average About page.

Should a tool be both beautiful and functional? It’s a debate that can never truly be settled, although folks have been trying for millennia. The question of whether form should follow function, or if they should be treated as equals, is a matter of subjectivity โ€” and in the realm of opinion, there are no true victors. If you’re The James Brand, though, it’s a non-negotiable. Where style and utility meet in the outdoors, The James Brand holds court.

Dissenters may reject TJB’s hyper-focus on minimalism and elegance โ€” some say the brand focuses on the look, rather than the durability and performance, of its knives. Perhaps that is the case, compared to other well-known brands including Benchmade, Spyderco and Microtech, to name a few โ€” but at the end of the day, The James Brand didn’t set out to make the toughest and most durable knives on the market. It set out to make the most functional and sophisticated tools that you actually want to pick up and use every day.

Products in the Guide

A Brief History of The James Brand

An industrial designer by trade, Ryan Coulter has carried a knife since childhood, and after years of searching for the ideal pocket knife, he decided to create his own. Coulter and a group of designers founded The James Brand in 2012 to address an unmet need: high-quality, expertly designed products that placed an emphasis on premium materials and a minimalist design aesthetic, and clear attention to the details.

a knife and camping gear in the trunk of a carThe James Brand

The brand started with a single offering, The Chapter, and over the ensuing years has maintained a tight, yet impactful, product lineup that includes knives and EDC accessories.

What does The James Brand Offer Today?

a notebook, pen, and pocket knife on a desk next to a laptopThe James Brand

Since introducing The Chapter, The James Brand has expanded its collection in a thoughtful and measured way. While many knife brands have hundreds of models, The James Brand has kept its selection to a streamlined 16 knives and nine EDC-ready tools and accessories. This minimalistic approach has allowed the brand to maintain its well-known aesthetic and approach new product launches in a measured, thoughtful way.

The James Brand: The Knives

The foundation upon which the entire The James Brand is built, the knives that make it to the brand’s stable are considered, premium, functional and above all, beautiful. With a design for every EDC enthusiast, this careful curation helps maintain TJB’s dedication to minimalism and taste.

The Kline

  • Blade Length: 3.4 inches
  • Overall Length: 7.9 inches
  • Blade Material: Magnacut
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: Micarta
  • Weight: 4.0 ounces

The Kline is built using Magnacut, a first for The James Brand. For the unfamiliar, Magnacut is a new, American-made, EDC-specific stainless steel designed to be highly corrosion resistant and extremely durable. The “supersteel” is a jack of all trades; its composition lends it to be useful in a variety of everyday tasks.

The Anzick

  • Blade Length: 8 inches
  • Overall Length: 12.5 inches
  • Blade Material: CPM Magnacut
  • Blade Type: Chef’s knife
  • Handle Material: Two-tone G10
  • Weight: 7.4 ounces

TJB partnered with Sitka on this limited-run, handmade in the USA collab chef’s knife designed to bring the professional culinary experience to the outdoors. The elegant fixed blade, which features a MagnaCut blade, full-tang construction and a textured and contoured CNC-milled G10 handle, took two years of development to bring to fruition.

The Carter

  • Blade Length: 2.75 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.55 inches
  • Blade Material: VG-10 steel
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: Micarta or G10
  • Weight: 3.0 ounces

Billed as TJBโ€™s โ€œmost advanced everyday carry knife,โ€ the Carter comes with some notable traits, including machined handle scales available in materials like G10 and Micarta. Then there’s the drop-point blade, which opens with a thumb disc and secures with a smooth sliding switch lock. It’s made of VG-10, a high-end steel that’s low maintenance โ€” promising excellent corrosion resistance and edge retention โ€” so you can use it freely without fear of messing up something you just spent a wad of cash on.

The Redstone

  • Blade Length: 2.5 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.2 inches
  • Blade Material: SANDVIK 12C27 steel
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: Polypropylene scales
  • Weight: 1.8 ounces

This is The James Brand’s lightweight, compact and handy blade, made for anything and everything, and is easily one of its most popular knives. The Redstone is all about function, thanks to its island design hold, a Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel blade, one-piece die-stamped chassis and minimal bent-wire clip for easy EDC.

The Folsom

  • Blade Length: 2.75 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.75 inches
  • Blade Material: VG 10
  • Blade Type: Straight
  • Handle Material: G10 scales
  • Weight: 3.4 ounces

Designed in collaboration with World Tour surfer Conner Coffin, an avid fisherman and gardener as well as an athlete, the Folsom features a solid liner-lock construction, G10 scales and a rugged stainless-steel blade. Itโ€™s incredibly easy to care for and is slim enough to slip easily into your pocket. The Folsom is The James Brand’s thinnest design.

The Barnes

  • Blade Length: 3.5 inches
  • Overall Length: 7.8 inches
  • Blade Material: Bohler M390 stainless steel
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: 6AL4V titanium
  • Weight: 4.6 ounces

The Barnes features a titanium framelock, and it’s the brand’s very first integral design. The Barnes is CNC-machined from one solid billet of 6AL4V titanium, which means fewer moving parts (and points of failure), and a unique construction you won’t find in the typical pocket knife. The Barnes has one of the longest overall lengths of The James Brand’s pocket knives, yet it carries a minimal weight thanks to its creative construction.

The Ellis Slim

  • Blade Length: 2.6 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.5 inches
  • Blade Material: Sandvik 12C27
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: G10 scales
  • Weight: 1.8 ounces

Slimmer than a pack of gum, one of the newest entries to The James Brand’s lineup is the aptly named Ellis Slim. This little wonder is built off the foundation of the Ellis and Elko family, The James Brand’s slip-joint pocket knives. The design language of the Ellis Slim mirrors that of its bulkier older brother, but with one major tweak: TJB said “See ya” to the scissors, which significantly streamlined its new knife.

The Ellis

  • Blade Length: 2.5 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.2 inches
  • Blade Material: Sandvik 12C27 steel
  • Blade Type: Drop point
  • Handle Material: G10 scales
  • Weight: 2.6 ounces

The older brother of the aforementioned Ellis Slim, the original Ellis features multiple tools that up its efficiency, including scissors, TJB’s All-Things scraper, flat-head screwdriver and pry tool. The James Brand set out to redesign the classic Swiss Army Knife with the Ellis, while bringing its unique aesthetic to the forefront.

The Elko

  • Blade Length: 1.74 inches
  • Overall Length: 4.33 inches
  • Blade Material: Sandvik 12C27 steel
  • Blade Type: Straight
  • Hardware: 416 stainless steel
  • Weight: 1.39 ounces

The size of a USB stick, the Elko is a tiny package that packs a big punch. The Elko traces its inspiration to classic Swiss Army Knife keychain tools, and while it may not replace the other, larger knives in your daily rotation, it sure is a useful little thing to have on hand when you need something sharp and pointy.

The Hell Gap

  • Overall Length: 7.8 inches
  • Blade Length: 3.8 inches
  • Blade Material: Crucible S35VN steel
  • Blade Type: drop point
  • Handle Material: Micarta
  • Weight: 3.1 ounces

Released in 2019, the Hell Gap is one of our staff’s favorite fixed-blade knives โ€” and a GP100 honoree. Itโ€™s neither tactical nor survival-oriented, but some combination of both (plus a dash of kitchen knife), and its Crucible S35VN steel offers better toughness (resistance to chipping) than the S30V steel of another knife we appreciate, the Gerber Terracraft.

The Chapter

  • Blade Length: 2.75 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.5 inches
  • Blade Material: Damasteel Rose DS93X
  • Blade Type: Straight
  • Handle Material: 6AL4V titanium
  • Weight: 2.65 ounces

The knife that started it all and put TJB on the map: this was The James Brand’s first knife, and it features a deep pocket clip for easy carry, a titanium frame-lock construction and sealed ceramic bearings. The Chapter was created to bring design and strength together in one package, and continues to do so to this day.

The Abbey

  • Overall Length: 3 inches
  • Blade Material: AR-RPM9
  • Handle Material: Rosewood
  • Weight: 0.6 ounces

The James Brand calls this “the little fixed blade for all occasions,” which is about as accurate an assessment as you could make of the Abbey. While it was originally created with a niche intent โ€” opening the shrink-wrap plastic covering vinyl records โ€” its use cases go far beyond its single-minded origins.

The Pike

  • Blade Length: 2.3 inches
  • Overall Length: 5.7 inches
  • Blade Material: Damasteel Rose DS93X
  • Blade Type: Wharncliffe
  • Handle Material: Rosewood
  • Weight: 2.1 ounces

Noting that Wharncliffe blades were common on old crafting knives, The James Brand added one to a contemporary design that it hopes will last long enough to become an heirloom. It’s vintage inspired, with a minimal, modern twist. The warm materials and simple design are TJB’s interpretation of the classic non-locking slip-joint. It’s the type of knife Granddad would have carried around (if he could afford to).

The Duval

  • Blade Length: 2.6 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.4 inches
  • Blade Material: Crucible S35VN steel
  • Blade Type: Modified sheepsfoot
  • Handle Material: Rosewood
  • Weight: 2 ounces

Released in 2019, the Duval is The James Brand’s addition to the gentlemanโ€™s knife category. It has a 2.6-inch sheepsfoot blade made of Crucible S35VN steel and a titanium frame available with rosewood or Micarta handles. Thereโ€™s also an even flashier Damascus steel blade option.

The Wayland

  • Blade Length: 3 inches
  • Overall Length: 6.9 inches
  • Blade Material: CPM-S35VN stainless steel
  • Blade Type: Sheepsfoot
  • Handle Material: Rosewood, G10 or Micarta scales
  • Weight: 2.8 ounces

The Barlow knife dates back to 17th century England. Focused on simplicity, utility and affordability, it’s the working man’s knife, if you will. The Wayland takes on that history, in TJB fashion. Rather than including a clip-point blade, seen on many Barlow knives, the Wayland features a sheepsfoot, which has less of a piercing point. The knife also brings premium material options including rosewood, G10 or Micarta handle scales and a top-notch CPM-S35VN stainless steel blade.

The Palmer

  • Materials: Standard high carbon utility blade; anodized 6064 aluminum

An upgrade to the utility knife, the Palmer takes a completely novel approach to traditional design โ€” and it pays off. Featuring anodized aluminum handles, a lanyard for easy deployment, six unique colors and the brand’s first-ever patent-pending mechanism design, The Palmer strikes a balance between a functional EDC item you won’t want to leave the house without, and an everyday piece of art you’d be just as comfortable displaying on the wall as having in your pocket. No wonder it cracked the GP100 last year.

The James Brand: The EDC Accessories

EDC lovers know that if you’re going to carry a premium knife, you’ve got to have the tools and accessories to support it. No kit is complete without a few of The James Brand’s elevated EDC-ready add-ons. Great knives come with great responsibility EDC.

The Mehlville

  • Materials: Anodized 6063 aluminum

The first carabiner from The James Brand set the bar in terms of usefulness and utility. Crafted with a dual compartment design, the carabiner-inspired key holder is machined out of a solid billet of aluminum for an incredible strength-to-weight ratio. And it holds up: we’ve carried ours for five years and it still looks as good as the day we got it.

The Hardin

  • Materials: Anodized 6063 aluminum

One of The James Brand’s newest carabiner designs, the Hardin is a drop-forged carabiner made out of 6063 aluminum, with a two-compartment design and spring-loaded gate. The Hardin comes in nine color options โ€” one of the broadest palettes of any TJB product.

The Stilwell

  • Materials: Aluminum, D1 style replaceable ink cartridge

From a writer or designer’s point of view, no one should ever leave the house without a pen. If you’re looking for something compact that’ll match the aesthetic of your existing EDC kit, the Stilwell was designed for you. The aluminum construction keeps it light, and the replaceable ink cartridge means you’ll always be able to jot down that next inspired thought.

The Cambro Tray Set

  • Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced polymer

All this good-looking, useful EDC needs somewhere to live when it’s not in your pocket, right? Right. That’s where the Cambro comes in: released in March 2023, it’s a two-piece place for your keys and lighter and pocket knife and change to hang out when not in use โ€” and look damn good doing it.

The Holcombe

  • Materials: 420 stainless steel OR 6 AL4V titanium

Compared to the Mehlville, its predecessor, the Holcombe is smaller and lighter, but it still uses that dual-compartment construction to decrease the chance of losing the items itโ€™s meant to hold onto. The Holcombe, which comes in titanium or coated stainless steel, is almost explicitly for the person who wants to carry keys on the waist.

The Rowan

  • Materials: 420 stainless steel

There are minimalists, and then there are minimalists: ounce counters, obsessed with the simplest and most distilled design. The Rowan uses the same design language as the Holcombe, but eschews any moving parts. It also manages to pack in a tiny ruler and bottle opener, for good measure.

The Randolph

  • Materials: 6al4v titanium with a water-resistant screw on cap

Made to carry, ahem, toothpicks or small valuables into the backcountry, the office or beyond, the Randolph is a small, slim cylindrical container with a wide variety of uses.

The Midland

  • Materials: Billet 6AL4V titanium

The second iteration of a key hook that TJB designed way back in 2015, the Midland is a solid yet minimal keychain solution. Keep keys out of your pocket with this titanium management system, which eschews moving parts in favor of simplicity and durability.

The Halifax

  • Materials: CNC machined 6AL-4V titanium; 416 stainless steel (bottle opener)

Leave it to The James Brand to deliver one of the world’s most minimalist screwdrivers. The Halifax can be used as a flathead or Philips driver, fits into both the left and right hand and even manages to open a bottle or two after the task at hand is complete.

These Are the Most Stunning Earbuds We’ve Ever Tested

Master & Dynamic’s latest wireless earbuds are made of sapphire glass and aluminum โ€” and have a Kevlar charging case โ€” but can the performance match the looks? We found out.

master dynamic mw09Tucker Bowe

If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

If you’re familiar with Master & Dynamic, you know that the NYC-based audio company makes headphones and earphones that have a distinct look and feel. They blend high-end design with premium materials (like metal, leather, glass and sometimes even stone) to craft products that are beautiful, stylish and a bit pricey, too. Not surprisingly, those adjectives pretty accurately describe its latest flagship pair of wireless earbuds: the Master & Dynamic MW09.

Products in the Guide

These third-generation wireless earbuds look similar to their predecessors, 2021’s MW08, but M&D has given the MW09s a slightly refreshed design โ€” check out the embossed circle on each earbud โ€” and, more importantly, decked them out with improved sound, noise-cancellation, battery life and a couple other features as well. They’ve also bumped the price up to $349 and $399 (if you spring for the Kevlar case).

Master & Dynamic MW09: What We Think

master dynamic mw09Tucker Bowe

The market for noise-canceling wireless earbuds is incredibly competitive. So much so that it’s actually become pretty difficult for traditional audio companies, like Bose, Sony and even Master & Dynamic, to compete with the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google, which are able to integrate their own wireless earbuds with special and proprietary features so that they work better with their own smartphones.

The way that these traditional audio companies are able to compete is by making wireless earbuds that either a. sound better, b. have superior noise-cancellation or c. simply look cooler. Master & Dynamic’s MW09s lean most heavily into the latter โ€” there’s really nothing else out there that looks like them.

If you’re in the market for noise-canceling wireless earbuds and you’re looking for something that’s different and the $399 (or $349) price tag doesn’t scare you away, this pair stands out from the pack.

To learn more about our testing methodology and how we evaluate products, head here.

The MW09s are definitely lookers

master dynamic mw09
The M&D MW09s are among the prettiest wireless earbuds I’ve tested. They’re made of sapphire glass and aluminum, and they shimmer in the light.
Tucker Bowe

I’m a big fan of being able to look at a product and instantly tell what it is … and that’s exactly the case with Master & Dynamic’s wireless earbuds โ€” they don’t look like anything else. They’re made of aluminum and sapphire glass, which shimmers in the light, and they’re just gorgeous all-around wireless earbuds.

The kicker is that if you get one of the “lavish” colorways, such as green (pictured), blue or gunmetal, those models cost an extra $50 and come with a fancier โ€” and significantly lighter โ€” Kevlar charging case. The other three “more traditional” finishes โ€” black, silver/white and gold โ€” come in an aluminum charging that matches the finish of the earbuds.

The MW09s sound as good as they look

master dynamic mw09
With the MW09, Master & Dynamic offers quite a bit of in-app control over the noise-cancellation, transparency and sound settings.
Tucker Bowe

The MW09 earbuds each pack the same 11mm beryllium driver that was in the MW08 earbuds, so they don’t sound that much different to me. They still deliver that excellent balanced sound that Master & Dynamic is well known for. I’ve been listening to a good mix of genres โ€” from Smashing Pumpkins to Dua Lipa, London Grammar to Blink 182 (the new album is pretty great!) โ€” and the MW09s sound superb.

For those who want to tinker with their sound, the MW09 can scratch that itch. They work with the same companion app, M&D Connect, as their predecessors, which allows you to toggle between several EQ presets as well as customize EQ settings for yourself; I’m not usually one to mess around with those things, but that option is there if you want it.

One of the biggest differences between the MW09s and their predecessors is that the new models support a wider variety of audio codecs, including AAC, LC3, SBC, AptX Lossless and AptX Adaptive. The catch, of course, is that most smartphones still don’t support a lot of these higher-res codecs. But when they do, the MW09 will in theory be ready for it. The one outlier is that unlike some other wireless earbuds, like the Sony WF-1000XM5, the MW09 do not support LDAC files.

They fit just like M&D’s previous wireless earbuds

master dynamic mw09
The MW09 have a tradition earbud design — unlike the stem design made popular by AirPods — and fit similar to the company’s previous wireless earbuds.
Tucker Bowe

If you’ve worn any of Master & Dynamic’s wireless earbuds in recent years, know that the MW09s fit almost exactly the same. They still have a traditional earbud design โ€” as opposed to the ever-popular stem design of Apple’s AirPods โ€” which you may or may not prefer.

I’ve always gravitated towards the stem design of Apple’s AirPods over pretty much everything else โ€” they just fit more securely in my ears. And to that end, the MW09 aren’t my favorite because they don’t fit in my ears as well. I say the same thing about Sony’s, Bose’s and Bowers & Wilkins’s wireless earbuds, all of which have a similar traditional fit.

md mw09
Sooo many eartip options.
Tucker Bowe

That said, the MW09s do come with seven different eartip options โ€” two foam and five silicone โ€” and there’s even an “acoustic seal test” that you can run within the app to make sure the earbuds are fitting in your ears just right. In the end I was able to get the best fit by using one of the foam options that M&D provided. They fit well enough that I didn’t think they were going to fall out, but this earbud style isn’t what I typically prefer.

Physical buttons are old school … and I like that

md mw09
There’s no swipe or touch controls on the MW09. Instead, there are physical buttons for play/pause and switching between ANC and transparency modes.
Tucker Bowe

Unlike a lot of popular wireless earbuds, Master & Dynamic’s MW09 has opted against having touch controls โ€” there’s no swiping or tapping on the actual earbuds. Instead, there are physical buttons. On the left earbud, there’s a rocker-style button for volume controls and toggling between ANC and ambient sound modes. On the right earbud, there’s a single “multi-function” button for play/pause, skipping forwards or backwards and summoning your voice assistant. It takes some learning, but I got there in the end.

I’m a big fan of physical controls โ€” they eliminate the chance of an accidental swipe or tap action whenever you touch an earbud to adjust its fit โ€” so the MW09s definitely check that box. I will say, however, that because the way that the MW09s fit in your ears, using the button controls is still a little precarious. I actually preferred to just use my iPhone to adjust volume and switch between ANC/transparency modes.

The noise-cancellation is good, but not elite

Master & Dynamic did up the active noise-cancellation abilities on the MW09. The earbuds have a new processor and the built-in microphone and sensors have been repositioned for better ANC performance. I’ve found that they do a good, not great, job of blocking out outside sounds; specifically, they’re able to eliminate the majority of lower frequencies, such as the rumbling of a car or train while commuting, but are less effective with higher frequencies like people talking (to be fair, this is case with the majority of noise-canceling headphones and wireless earbuds).

Perhaps the most notable thing with the MW09’s ANC abilities is that there are now more options. You can choose from three different noise-canceling settings: Max ANC, All Day ANC (which isn’t quite as powerful, but extends the battery life), and Adaptive ANC (automatically adjusts based on your surroundings). I tended to just leave Max ANC on because it seemed to work the best.

If you’re into customizing transparency (or “ambient”) modes, the MW09 offers that as well. In addition to the default transparency mode, there’s also an “awareness” mode that heightens the sounds of your environment and “voice” mode that helps you better hear the people you’re talking to. All of these worked well, but again they’re not elite. You just can’t really beat the transparency capabilities of AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM5.

You’re paying a premium for style

master dynamic mw09
The MW09s support wireless charging.
Tucker Bowe

The Master & Dynamic MW09s have a pretty similar feature set as a lot of other flagship noise-canceling wireless earbuds. They have noise-canceling and transparency modes. They have a companion app that allows you to tweak EQ settings and personalize your earbuds. They have a case that supports wireless charging. And they support Bluetooth multipoint, so you can pretty seamlessly switch audio between two different devices, like your laptop and smartphone.

The obvious caveat is that the Master & Dynamic MW09s cost $349 or $399 (depending on the model), placing them among the more expensive wireless earbuds you can buy. And they can’t quite match the noise-cancellation and transparency abilities of more well-known options by Apple, Bose or Sony. Essentially, you’re paying extra for the high-end materials and signature look and feel (and vibe) of Master & Dynamic’s wireless earbuds. For a lot of people, that might be worth it.

Pros

  • Super stylish wireless earbuds
  • Excellent and balanced sound quality
  • Available in a bunch of different colors

Cons

  • One of the more expensive wireless earbuds
  • ANC and transparency modes isn't quite as elite as other flagships
  • Earbud-style fit might not be for you

The Story Behind NYC’s Heartwarming Underground Holiday Drink

Most coquito sold in New York isn’t legal. It’s a family thing.

a group of glass bottlesCoquito Mas Rico

If you’ve lived in New York City around Christmastime, you may have heard whispers about coquito โ€” a coconut-and-rum-based egg nog-like beverage that seems to be everywhere in certain neighborhoods in December. The drink, which originated in Puerto Rico, seems almost omnipresent among the city’s sizable Puerto Rican and Dominican diaspora, and if you ask around you’re bound to find someone who knows someone who not only makes coquito, but will sell you a bottle โ€” usually in a repurposed spent rum bottle.

Technically, it’s illegal to sell coquito without a liquor license in New York, but you’re likely to have a harder time finding the stuff legally. Few legal options exist โ€” Bacardi debuted its version just three years ago โ€” and while the store-bought versions are fine if that’s all you have access to, they pale in comparison to the homemade stuff.

The illegality of selling homemade coquito, coupled with the need to “know someone” in order to obtain it, might cast a negative light on the beverage for some. And yet, coquito does not suffer from the same poor reputation as New York’s other illegally sold homemade hooch, the high-proof juice concoction known as Nutcracker that’s all over the streets of Harlem and Washington Heights every summer. That’s probably because coquito is not associated with teenage partying but rather family togetherness at the holidays with a deep and historic connection to some of New York’s most vibrant and visible communities.

Coquito plays a key role in holiday family traditions among much of New York’s Hispanic populations.
Marilyn Nieves

To find out more about coquito’s connection to Puerto Rican culture in New York City (as well as how to make the stuff), I chatted with a woman who operates a holiday coquito-selling outfit out of Harlem called Coquito Mas Rico that sells both traditional and vegan coquito. To protect her identity, she has asked to be referred to only by her nickname, A-Rod.

Note: Selected portions of this interview have been condensed for clarity and length.

GP: Could you start by telling me a little about coquito and what it means to you?

A-Rod: It signals that Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) is quickly approaching. A time for music, dancing and homemade pasteles. I am Puerto Rican and Dominican, born and raised in NYC. Coquito signals that the best holidays of the year are approaching and quality time with family is near.

I remember being a kid gathering with family, and all of the adults would come around and drink coquito; it was a must. The kids even had a special non-alcoholic batch to drink along and join in on the toast! Those moments are some of my favorite memories of my childhood. So once Thanksgiving comes along, the coquito gets popped, and it doesnโ€™t stop flowing until the New Year.

GP: Can you tell me a bit about coquitoโ€™s presence in NYC culture? This is anecdotal, but I feel like everyone I know in the city of Puerto Rican or Dominican heritage has some kind of coquito hookup.

A-Rod: The presence of coquito in NYC makes it feel like being back on the islands. Everyone wants some and everyone knows someone who makes it. It is everywhere in the city during this time, showing the strength of the emigrated Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic population in NYC, which only seems to be growing.

Coquito is a connection to our culture and other cultures that share similar holiday drinks, like Haitian Kremas. The strong presence of coquito in NYC is an indicator that our cultural traditions are being passed down through generations, and it’s a reminder of our home away from home. I love being from NYC because the presence of our culture and the diversity in so many communities shine so bright, especially during the holidays.

Coquito is traditionally served throughout the holiday season in New York’s Puerto Rican neighborhoods.
Coquito Mas Rico

GP: It seems like everyone certainly enjoys drinking coquito; how did you come to make a business out of it?

A-Rod: I remember watching my grandmother, mother and aunt make coquito around the holidays, and I was always attentive. I noticed they each made it differently, but it was always good. Once I decided I wanted to make it, I asked different family members for their preferences and then got to work on my own recipe.

Not everyone loves an overwhelming coconut taste or an unbalanced amount of spice or rum. So, I wanted to create a perfect blend. I began trying different mixtures until I found the perfect combination. I then gave samples out and confirmed that it had the perfect balance and was not too thick.

Coquito Mas Rico really started just for family and friends and now has a small social media presence. It is based in NYC with local delivery available or pickup in Harlem.

When it came time to share her recipe, A-Rod decided to keep her own “Perfect” coquito recipe a secret, and I certainly don’t blame her. After all, she spent the time perfecting it, so I’d consider that her intellectual property. What she did instead was lay out all of the ingredients you need, along with rough measurements to make a coquito that you like, and she encourages you to experiment with your mix.

How to Make Coquito: An Approximate Recipe

A-Rod: There are so many ways to make traditional coquito, so I am going to start off by saying that some people use eggs. I do not. (Editor’s note: a quick Google search seems to suggest that many “Dominican-style” coquito recipes feature eggs, while Puerto Rican recipes often do not.) Also, I donโ€™t use exact measurements for everything โ€” I eyeball some of the ingredients. Itโ€™s our peopleโ€™s superpower, haha!

bottles of coquito on a christmas shelf with stockings
Coquito Mas Rico makes both traditional and vegan coquito.
Coquito Mas Rico

Some people cook their coquito in a pot on the stove, while others use a blender. Both styles are refrigerated upon completion, so itโ€™s a matter of personal preference. My preference is to use a blender. The milks that you use and the quantity of them are also dependent on your personal preferences and what taste you are trying to achieve. The cream of coconut has a strong taste of coconut (you can use Goya or Coco Lopez), so you can decide how much you want to use. The more you use, the more coconut you will taste, especially if you use coconut milk as well.

Although it is not my exact recipe, you will find everything you need to find your perfect coquito blend below.

Ingredients:

Coconut Milk
Evaporated Milk
Cream of Coconut (not coconut cream โ€” cream of coconut is sweetened)
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Vanilla
Ground Cinnamon or Cinnamon Sticks
Nutmeg
White Rum (A-Rod likes Bacardi Superior)

Preparation:

1. Start by pouring the cream of coconut into the blender (use one-half or one whole can).

2. Add one can of coconut milk OR one can of evaporated milk. If you want a strong coconut taste, use coconut milk only. If you prefer a more balanced taste, use evaporated milk only. If you use coconut milk only and the taste ends up being too coconutty for you, add a bit of evaporated milk until you reach your desired flavor.

3. Add at least half of a can of sweetened condensed milk to the blender. I recommend using the entire can, but if you used both evaporated and coconut milk, you may want to start with just half a can.

4. Add ยผ โ€“ ยฝ tablespoon (to taste) of vanilla, 3-5 shakes of ground cinnamon (or 2 โ€“ 3 sticks) and a dash of nutmeg. Turn on your blender and mix until the cinnamon is dispersed evenly.

5. Add your favorite white rum. I recommend between eight to twelve ounces of liquor based on how strong you want it. The longer the coquito sits, the stronger it gets, so I recommend settling somewhere in the middle of those measurements.

6. Blend for another minute and pour into a bottle. Refrigerate for at least two hours, but it will be best if left overnight. Pour into a glass over ice when serving for the best experience.

In addition to her classic coquito, A-Rod also makes a vegan version for those who can’t or don’t drink dairy milk.

GP: Where did the idea to make vegan coquito come from?

a group of glass bottles
Coquito is often sold in recycled rum bottles, usually Bacardi.
Coquito Mas Rico

A-Rod: I decided to offer vegan coquito because I had friends who were special to me who were vegan or lactose-intolerant in their adult life but really missed the coquito they had when they were younger. Being either is obviously a problem when it comes to coquito because there are various milks in the traditional recipe. Again, coquito really is our culture, so I decided I would do something about their dilemma to bring some cheer to their holiday. So, it was back to the drawing board.

I did some research on alternatives to the ingredients I use, tried out a recipe idea, gave out some samples and I had a hit. People love the vegan coquito and appreciate it because it is not widely offered. I really started making coquito to begin with because it made my loved ones happy, which brings me joy, and the vegan offerings just add to that.

How do I make it? Although I canโ€™t give out the exact details, it is not as hard as you think. Donโ€™t โ€ฆ use โ€ฆ milk! Use coconut milk, cream of coconut and replace the sweetened condensed milk with an alternative such as sweetened condensed coconut milk. The beauty of creating your vegan coquito at home is deciding on what blend tastes best to you.

You can follow the exact steps for how to make regular coquito to make the vegan version, just be sure to swap out all of the dairy with non-dairy, vegan alternatives. It is worth noting that since there is no real milk, vegan coquito tends to be a little less thick, so even if you’re using the same amount of liquor, the drink may taste stronger.

And always remember to pour over ice and enjoy!

If you’re in New York City and are looking to pick up your own bottle from Coquito Mas Rico this holiday season, head on over to their Instagram page and place an order.

The 2026 Subaru Outback: Everything You Need to Know

Expect Subaru to stick to the same formula โ€” but deliver some much-needed changes.

2022 subaru outback wildernessSubaru

The Subaru Outback is the OG crossover and a mainstay for the brand in America. The Outback is one of the cars we recommend most frequently. If you need a bit of off-road capability, it’s arguably the best all-around affordable vehicle on the market. Subaru has been steadily rolling out its next-gen SUVs. And the next-generation Outback may make its debut sometime in 2024 โ€” but likely as a 2026 model year vehicle.

Here’s what we know so far about the 2026 Subaru Outback.

When will the new Subaru Outback arrive?

2022 subaru outback wilderness Subaru

Subaru likes a tight six-year product cycle. The Crosstrek launched in 2023 for the 2024 model year (after launching in 2017 for the 2018 model year). The new Forester is launching in 2024 for the 2025 model year (after launching in 2018 for the 2019 model year). Barring unforeseen delays, we expect the new Outback will arrive a year later in 2025 for the 2026 model year.

Development on the new Outback is far enough along that Subaru dealers received โ€œa peek behind the curtainโ€ in early 2023.

Will the new Subaru Outback get a new platform?

subaru outback wilderness Subaru

Probably not. Subaruโ€™s recently launched vehicles โ€” BRZ excepted โ€” have been sticking with the Subaru Global Platform for a second go-around. The 2025 Forester was a very incremental update mechanically. We expect the Outback will follow suit as Subaru shifts its development focus to EVs.

Will the new Subaru Outback offer a hybrid powertrain?

2022 subaru outback wilderness Subaru

Probably. The Outbackโ€™s biggest weakness compared to its rivals is fuel economy and not offering a hybrid option. Expect that to change. Subaru has said the Forester is getting a hybrid in 2025. Expect the Outback to follow suit.

Subaru has not yet provided any insight into what the hybrid powertrain for the Forester will look like. However, we can expect Subaru to lean heavily on Toyota hybrid tech.

Will the new Subaru Outback go electric?

subaru solterra Subaru

Subaru has not announced an electric Outback yet. But an Outback EV is possible. Subaru is pivoting hard toward EVs. The brand announced plans to unveil three new EV crossovers by 2026 and sell 200,000 EVs globally in the same year. It would be more surprising if Subaru didnโ€™t lean into powerful, existing brands like the Outback to ease that process.

What will the new Subaru Outback look like?

a white car parked on a dirt road with trees and grass Subaru

The 2025 Forester should preview some changes heading for the Outback. Styling has been consistent over the generations; we expect the Outback to still look like an Outback. But trendy features like the flatter panels and light bar extending the width of the vehicle will likely be coming to the Outback as well.

Will the new Outback get a Wilderness trim?

2022 subaru outback wilderness Subaru

We would bet that it will. The off-road-ready Wilderness treatment has been a popular offering. Subaru has been expanding it throughout the lineup. And weโ€™d be shocked if Subaru did not offer an Outback Wilderness at (or very shortly after) launch.

The 14 Best Knives, Outdoor Garments and Adventure Products of 2023

Evolution and revolution are two major themes in this year’s GP100 โ€” and our favorite outdoor gear pushed boundaries with the best of them.

Mount Everest stands 29,035 feet tall; the Mariana Trench dips 36,200 feet below sea level โ€” and everywhere in-between, outdoor enthusiasts convene with nature, in the pursuit of their passions. This year, the adventures continued, and alongside every intrepid explorer was a trusty pair of kicks, a cooler, a headlamp, a jacket … the list goes on.

What sets the best outdoor gear apart from the rest isn’t always weight, durability, sustainability โ€” although these factors come into play โ€” sometimes, it’s boundary pushing. Redefining limits. Just like the horizon-seeking individuals that lace up, load up and head out, some of our favorite gear strives to push the limits of what physical objects can do. With that in mind, here are 14 products that took big steps forward this year.

Oyster Tempo

a close up of a metal coolerOyster

Why It Matters: Borrowing technology once reserved for drinkware, Oyster launched the first-ever vacuum-insulated cooler on the market โ€” one that doesnโ€™t require ungodly amounts of ice.

The Big Picture: Unlike standard rotomolded coolers, the Tempo doesnโ€™t require a stop by the deli for bags of ice on the way to the beach. Norwegian startup Oyster spent over six years developing its flagship product, working out the mystery of how to translate vacuum insulation, which previously could only take cylindrical form without collapsing on itself, into the classically shaped cooler. The result is a lightweight, beautiful aluminum product that can hold all your drinks and snacks for the day, and only requires two small, reusable icepacks (included) to maintain the chill factor. Weighing in at just 12.34 pounds, the Tempo boasts the capacity of coolers three times its size and โ€” even better โ€” can keep ice pops poppin’ well into the afternoon.

Patagonia Triolet Jacket

a person climbing in the snowPatagonia

Why It Matters: In addition to its technical superiority, the Triolet is one of the first jackets on the market to utilize Gore-Tex ePe, a new waterproof membrane that replaces the nasty chemicals of the past.

The Big Picture: PFAS (aka per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances aka โ€œforever chemicalsโ€) have bolstered waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex for decades, but as research โ€” and regulation โ€” makes using them unattractive and sometimes illegal, manufacturers are updating their methods of manufacturing. Last year, Gore-Tex introduced ePe (expanded polyethylene), its new waterproof membrane that eschews these chemicals, and still repels moisture like the best of them. Patagonia was one of the first brands to jump on board and test ePe in its line, and the Triolet is one of the first jackets to be rolled out to consumers using the new waterproof membrane. After a week in the backcountry with ePe, our tester swears it’s as good as the original, if not better.

Leatherman ARC

a tackle box with a pair of pliers on itLeatherman

Why It Matters: The first-ever multi-tool to feature an unparalleled MagnaCut steel blade, the ARC also incorporates Leatherman’s groundbreaking FREE tech, so all 20 tools can be accessed with one hand.

The Big Picture: More often than not, the mini blade included on any given multi-tool is made of standard, budget-friendly steel โ€” something like 420HC, with decent rust resistance but unimpressive wear resistance. For its biggest 2023 release, Leatherman upped the ante and slapped a MagnaCut steel blade on the ARC, imbuing it with a higher standard of quality โ€” and overcoming unforeseen engineering challenges in the process. MagnaCut combines the holy trinity of knife attributes: edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance, but these qualities combined literally make it hard to bend to your will. After two years of development, the team got MagnaCut to behave, and the brand’s most ambitious multi-tool โ€” which also boasts 19 other handy functions, and absolutely blew our testers away with its heft, utility and smoothness โ€” was born.

The North Face Women’s Himalayan Suit

a person wearing a red snow suit and standing on a snowy mountainThe North Face

Why It Matters: Almost three decades after the release of the men’s Himalayan Suit, The North Face finally came out with a women’s-specific treatment, which received key design updates to better serve the female form.

The Big Picture: Before 2023, if you were a woman who wanted to don The North Faceโ€™s iconic, summit-ready Himalayan Suit, you had to make the menโ€™s version work. (Spoiler alert: For a lot of women, it didnโ€™t.) Nearly 30 years after the suitโ€™s introduction, TNF revealed a womenโ€™s-specific silhouette โ€” but the brand didnโ€™t just shrink it down and slap a “womenโ€™s” tag on it. TNF athlete Dawa Yangzum Sherpa provided crucial feedback for the redesign, including wearing the prototyped suit to complete five 8,000-meter climbs. Updates include female-friendly torso and inseam lengths; a redesigned shape and closures of the internal vest; an altered front-length zipper; modified hand pocket size; and maybe most crucially, a Rainbow Zip for easier bathroom access on the mountain.

Lifestraw Peak Series Solo

a hand holding a lifestraw by a riverLifeStraw

Why It Matters: Screw this pocket-sized filter onto any standard-sized plastic water bottle, and fresh water is yours for the drinking.

The Big Picture: Itโ€™s a little-known secret, but backpackers know the best bottle to take on any extended trek or through-hike isnโ€™t your bulky, vacuum-insulated half-gallon behemoth: itโ€™s the standard plastic water bottle. Lightweight, easily packable (and crushable, if need be) and replaceable just about anywhere, this cheap canteen can be spotted anywhere from the PCT to the Appalachian Trail. In an effort to bring fresh, drinkable water to any level of hiker (or general outdoorsperson) the team at Lifestraw developed a tiny but powerful filter that attaches to any regular ol’ bottle, turning the most mundane drinking vessel into a compact water station that can filter out removes bacteria, parasites and more. Just donโ€™t forget to clean it out when youโ€™re done sipping.

Eddie Bauer Downclime Alpine Sleep System

a woman in the woods wearing a jacket and beanieScott Seiver

Why It Matters: Eddie Bauer’s revolutionary new sleeping bag bottom zips into its well-known parka, shedding weight and adding comfort to alpine snoozes.

The Big Picture: Imagine camping in the mountains with a pack that’s lighter and a sleep set-up that’s warmer. How can these twin joys coincide? Eddie Bauer’s Downclime Alpine Sleep System merges an existing, popular product โ€” the Downclime Parka โ€” with a brand-new concept, one our Outdoors editor calls the mermaid tail: essentially the bottom half of a sleeping bag, which can be zipped into the parka. The system allows for more warmth, greater arm movement and, with a bag that weighs 24 ounces โ€” nearly three pounds less than our highest-rated option โ€” a much lighter load. When youโ€™re packing away half a bag and wearing the other half on your back, youโ€™ll be thanking Eddie Bauer.

Ledlenser HF8R Signature

a man standing in a caveLedlenser

Why It Matters: Where other brands add more lumens or cut ounces, Ledlenser decided its latest headlamp would be built to optimize light intensity and direction … hands-free.

The Big Picture: The HF8R Signature features patented Ledlenser Adaptive Light Beam Technology, which measures light, temperature and lamp performance 400 times per second and automatically adjusts, without the wearer having to touch it. Reaching up to 2,000 lumens, the HF8R can switch between flood, spot and mid โ€” depending what it thinks you need. Want to get dinner prepped? The 6.84-ounce headlamp will dim, so you’re not blinding yourself or others as you prep. Looking for your dog that’s run into the bushes? Lift your head and the HF8R will illuminate objects hundred of yards away. While the adaptive mode is seamless, setup is tricky, and if you switch into non-adaptive mode for manual control, it can be trickier. But if you want to go truly hands-free, it’s your best bet โ€” and a standout in the wide world of headlamps.

Santa Cruz Heckler SL

a man riding a bike on a dirt trailSanta Cruz

Why It Matters: This crafty eMTB more than makes up for its stripped-down motor thanks to a lean profile and nimble handling that recalls classic trail biking โ€” with a lot more oomph.

The Big Picture: For so long, e-bike brands have bamboozled us with gaudy specs, skipping past how youโ€™ll actually feel astride 50-pound beasts that quickly take you away from the simple pleasures of pedaling. Thatโ€™s what makes the Heckler SL so refreshing. While the 430 watt-hour Fazua Ride60 motor sheds some size, this carbon-framed creature also drops six pounds (vs. the standard Heckler), translating to a lively, natural ride that feels more approachable for novice or smaller MTBers, is easier to launch/get out of a ditch โ€” and totally rips. Throw in mulleted wheels, generous travel and modern geometry, and youโ€™ll have such a balanced, boosted blast, youโ€™ll forget all about those silly numbers anyway.

Nemo Tensor Extreme Conditions

a blue air mattress on the groundHayley Helms

Why It Matters: Nemo’s newest sleeping pad is the warmest, most insulating ultralight pad on the market, and still the quietest pad in its class.

The Big Picture: Sleeping pads may appear to be a dime a dozen, but whatโ€™s under the surface separates the cozy from the catastrophic. Nemo has made some of the best-in-class sleeping pads for years now, but the newest version of the Tensor, the Extreme Conditions, comes in multiple shapes and sizes (including Regular, above, and Mummy, below) with some bells and whistles never seen before. Weighing in at just 17 ounces, the ultra-slim pad has an 8.5 R-value โ€” which means while itโ€™s notably thin, itโ€™s also engineered to be more resistant to cold and heat than any other pad on the market. With those next-level qualities, a 2023 ISPO Award was inevitable, and so was making this list.

Gerber Assert

a person holding a knifeHayley Helms

Why It Matters: An incredibly lightweight, user-friendly knife we find ourselves reaching for again and again, the Assert is legit challenging the supremacy of Benchmade’s Bugout.

The Big Picture: If you asked a knife aficionado to name their favorite high-touch pocket knives over the past decade, Gerber most likely wouldnโ€™t make the list. That is, until the Assert came along. The brand released this upmarket offering in June, drawing immediate comparisons to Benchmade’s legendary Bugout thanks to its miniscule weight (1.97 oz.), quality materials and reliable handling. We’ve been testing it for half a year now, and it has sneakily become our go-to choice for jobs big and small. As one of Gerberโ€™s โ€œMade in the USAโ€ offerings, the 2.98-inch blade is slicing up consumer skepticism about the Portland-based brand’s ability to produce top-notch knives right here at home.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Crux 40

a skier going down a slopeHyperlite Mountain Gear

Why It Matters: An extraordinary combo of lightness, toughness and expertly designed functionality lets this pack go deeper into the backcountry then you ever have before.

The Big Picture: When youโ€™re on a mission to summit and shred 50 classic ski descents, you gotta have a pack that rocks. Thatโ€™s why world-class skier Townsend teamed up with Hyperlite on a pack made primarily of ultralight Dyneema, which is 15 times stronger than steel at the same weight. The result is loaded with Townsend-approved features, including internal sleeves for organized avalanche equipment and multiple external pockets, straps and attachment points for ski mountaineering gear. The coup de grรขce, however, is unprecedented for a pack made of this unique but somewhat unwieldy material: a back-entry panel every backcountry buff will love.

Adidas Terrex Free Hiker 2.0 Low

a wearing hiking shoesAdidas

Why It Matters: This low-profile update to the original Free Hiker, a 2019 GP100 selection, somehow improves upon the design, fit and function of its mid-height predecessor.

The Big Picture: Oftentimes, when brands release โ€œupdatesโ€ to popular products, they take the form of a new colorway or material upgrade. While the Free Hiker has been a crowd pleaser for years, many folks, including this writer, found the midheight form factor to be clunky and uncomfortable. But this year Adidas Terrex introduced a low version that made everything better in one fell swoop. The fit is more streamlined , and the toebox isnโ€™t as big and bulky. The low height is infinitely comfier while remaining just as capable and stylish as the versions that came before. That’s an update worth writing home about โ€” and lacing up for your next adventure in the city or out on the trail.

OnX Recent Imagery

mapOnX

Why It Matters: The outdoor digital navigation brandโ€™s collaboration with a global satellite imagery provider allows adventurers to see the condition of terrain right now โ€” or close to it.

The Big Picture: Three feature-packed onX apps โ€” Hunt, Offroad and Backcountry โ€” already aid the planning of myriad adventures via high-resolution basemaps, updated every few years. But now, Elite-level subscribers can view, quite literally, recent imagery: detailed satellite captures from Planet Labs PBC, refreshed every two weeks. So, for example, splitboarders can spot where powder lingers late in a season, and hikers can check if mountain passes are dry enough to cross. Such data ensures your next escapade will be more fun โ€” and also that youโ€™ll be a better steward of the outdoors, avoiding fragile conditions that can endanger both the land and yourself.

Pit Viper The Synthesizer

a person in orange jumpsuit holding a ropePit Viper

Why It Matters: Part snow goggles, part sunglasses, these whimsical specs promise to lighten your eyewear load on the mountain โ€” while going easy on your wallet.

The Big Picture: Debating hard and soft shell tacos, a wise young lady once asked: โ€œWhy donโ€™t we have both?โ€ This year, those rascals at Pit Viper approached the (non-existent?) conflict between goggles and sunnies the same way, and The Synthesizer was born. While it resembles PVโ€™s reliable retro wraparounds, a few features mountain-ize it: anti-fog coating, retainer strap, swappable lenses and removable foam inserts enable you to schuss from slopes to aprรจs scene as effortlessly as a young Glen Plake. While we wouldnโ€™t recommend The Synth for harsh midwinter conditions, it just might be the perfect mashup for your next bluebird day.

The 12 Best Headphones, Speakers, Soundbars and Other Tech of 2023

From JBL’s modular Dolby Atmos soundbar to Google’s 2-in-1 tablet, this year’s GP100 is loaded with cool and innovative consumer tech products.

an illustration of a record player with a badge that says style and gp100 2023Álvaro Bernis

Alongside the annual avalanche of also-ran gadgets, 2023 brought us a bunch of products that challenge the assumptions of many tried and true product categories. Soundbars became modular. Speakers prioritized 3D sound instead of stereo. Tablets disguised themselves as smart displays. And instant film cameras became, well, a little more sophisticated.

Here is an overview of the most interesting and innovative tech products of 2023.

Sonos Era 300

a speaker on a bookshelfSonos

Why It Matters: Sonos’ first standalone, non-soundbar, wireless speaker that’s fully optimized for Dolby Atmos and immersive audio shows where the future of music and home listening is going.

The Big Picture: The Era 300 is maybe the most ambitious speaker that Sonos has ever made. Not only is it way more versatile than Sonos speakers of old โ€” in addition to the traditional Wi-Fi, it also supports Bluetooth and USB-C line-in connectivity โ€” but it’s also the first that’s really primed for playing tracks that support Dolby Atmos, which most streaming services now offer. It’s the company’s first non-soundbar speaker to have an up-firing driver that creates virtual height channels so you feel more immersed in your tunes, delivering a more concert-like experience while listening to music at home.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

flip phonesSamsung

Why It Matters: After years pioneering the format, Samsung has perfected the folding phone design with the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

The Big Picture: Samsung bet big on foldable smartphones. It’s been making two different lines of foldables for years now, the smaller “Flip” and the larger fold “Fold.” With its more pocketable design and way more affordable price tag, the Flip has been leading the charge into mass acceptance and this year’s Flip 5 is a tipping point. On paper, the Flip 5 might look fairly similar to last year’s Flip 4, but Samsung has made some improvements that change the game. It has a much bigger cover display (3.78x times bigger, in fact) and there’s much more you can do without “flipping” the Flip 5 open. It has a redesigned hinge that allows the Flip 5 to fold completely flush and flat. And it has specs (including the same processor) that are similar to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S23. It all adds up to what feels like the perfect foldable smartphone.

Pocket Animal Audio Woovebox

wooveboxWoovebox

Why It Matters: Absolutely tiny and astoundingly powerful, this pocketable โ€œgrooveboxโ€ makes it easy for amateurs to sketch out songs instead of doom scrolling.

The Big Picture: The era of the microchip has made it possible to fit electronic orchestras and virtual recording studios into ever-smaller form factors. The Woovebox, a one-person labor of love out of Australia, takes this potential to an incredible, intuitive extreme. Literally fitting in the palm of your hand, the Woovebox makes it easy to design digital instruments and write full electronic songs with nothing more than 16 buttons, a knob, some LEDs, an 8-character digital display and an incredibly intuitive minimalist interface. Like any instrument, the Woovebox takes some time to learn, but with helpful melody generators and features that automatically snap notes into key, this tiny square lets amateurs generate tasty jams with ease and gives experts plenty of room to experiment, making it an excellent โ€“ and equally addictive โ€“ antidote to doom scrolling.

Google Pixel Tablet

a tablet with a screen and buttonsGoogle

Why It Matters: Google’s first tablet in years can double as a Google Assistant smart display, giving it some extra practicality other tablets just don’t have.

The Big Picture: With smartphones getting bigger and laptops getting lighter, tablets occupy an increasingly precarious position โ€” there are ever fewer reasons to actually use them. The Pixel Tablet has a clever solution. It works as a pretty standard 11-inch Android tablet on its own, but it’s unique because when connected to its speaker dock (which is included in the box), the Pixel Tablet turns into a Google Assistant smart display like the company’s Nest Hub. So even when you’re not using the Pixel Tablet like a traditional tablet, it’s still a really useful smart home device.

Polaroid I-2

a person holding a cameraPolaroid

Why It Matters: Marrying the magic of instant prints with the full manual control that enthusiasts demand, the Polaroid I-2 is a fantastic film camera you donโ€™t have to buy second-hand.

The Big Picture: The best and worst part of getting into analog photography is hunting for functional cameras from several decades ago. And while Polaroid and Fuji have resurrected instant-film offerings for photographers who have never heard of a dark room, these cameras have been aimed at newbies who want point-and-shoot simplicity. The Polaroid I-2, however, has a more expert audience in mind. With the option for full manual control (on top of other options, like automatic exposure and aperture priority), the I-2 gives experienced photographers the freedom to set up the exact shots they imagine, instead of exploring the creative possibilities of working with limitations, which, while itโ€™s fun, also gets old.

Teenage Engineering TP-7

a person using a recording deviceteenage engineering

Why It Matters: Though not exactly practical, Teenage Engineeringโ€™s field recorder reinvents an analog-inspired interface for the digital age.

The Big Picture: Teenage Engineering has a double-edged reputation for innovative design married with spectacular fit and finish and also extremely high price tags. Whether the results are clever and unique grail-grade devices or exceptionally overpriced gimmicks depends on how much money is in your wallet. The TP-7 Field Recorder rides the line, capable of recording voice memos just like your phone, but for $1,500. What makes the TP-7 so cool, though, is its analog-inspired interface. The centerpiece is a motorized โ€œtape reelโ€ with inertia for scrubbing through audio, and indicating playback through its slow, methodical movement. That, plus a unique โ€œrockerโ€ switch and a beautifully bright orange back, makes for an astonishingly beautiful, and also expensive, device.

FiiO R7

speakers on a tableFiiO

Why It Matters: The FiiO R7 is a gorgeous and high-end do-it-all device to turn your desktop or laptop into the ultimate hi-fi workstation. Just add speakers.

The Big Picture: The FiiO R7 is tricky to describe because of exactly how much it does. It can work as a high-end streamer, digital audio player (DAP), standalone amplifier, DAC, DAC/amp combo, preamp, decoder or transmitter. You can use it to drive most speakers or headphones, or integrate into an existing hi-fi system. It supports a multitude of wireless and wired connections, so you can quickly switch between various operating modes depending on what you need. The kicker is it looks great as well. It runs an intuitive Android operating system, has a bright 5-inch display and wonderfully tactile knobs that make interacting with the R7 a joy.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones

a person wearing headphonesBose

Why It Matters: After neglecting the line for years, Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra mark the company’s return to form as the king of noise-canceling headphones.

The Big Picture: Bose was once the undisputed king of noise-canceling headphones. But in recent years there has not only been more competition, but Bose stopped prioritizing its famed QuietComfort line. For the last four years, the awkwardly-named “Noise Cancelling Headphones 700” have been its flagship pair. But with the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, Boses has delivered wireless headphones that are among the most comfortable and best-sounding we’ve ever worn. And, of course, they have industry-leading active noise-cancellation that you’d expect from something with the QuietComfort name.

JBL Bar 1300X

speakers on a wooden surfaceJBL

Why It Matters: With clever detachable satellite speakers, the JBL Bar 1300X can transform from a traditional soundbar into a true surround sound system in the blink of an eye.

The Big Picture: Plenty of soundbar-and-subwoofer combos support Dolby Atmos. The JBL Bar 1300X does one better. Its modular design with detachable rear satellite speakers at the end of the soundbar allows it to work like a flagship-quality Dolby Atmos soundbar most of the time. But when you’re watching a movie or big sporting event, you can remove the end speakers, place them behind you, and use them as rear satellite speakers for a true surround sound system. This isn’t JBL’s first attempt at this design, but the Bar 1300X distinguishes itself by being the company’s most premium model to date. Also, the detachable satellite speakers can work as stereo-paired or individual portable Bluetooth speakers that you can take inside or even outside your home.

Lenovo YogaBook 9i

a person using a laptopLenovo

Why It Matters: A dual-screen folding computer with a detachable keyboard stylus and kickstand, the Lenovo YogaBook 9i pushes the concept of a “laptop” to its limits and beyond.

The Big Picture: The Lenovo YogaBook 9i doesn’t really click until you see it in person. It’s a twin-screen OLED laptop, with two identical touchscreens back-to-back. You can use it in tablet mode with one screen folded back on the other like with a traditional 2-in-1 convertible. Or you can use it in laptop mode where there’s a touchscreen keyboard in place or a regular one. The kicker is that the YogaBook 9i comes with accessories โ€” specifically a Bluetooth wireless keyboard, folio stand, stylus and mouse โ€” that allow you to transform into a workstation with the twin displays, flipped horizontally, acting like an ultra-wide monitor setup. It’s versatile in the coolest way possible.

Linn Sondek LP12-50

a close up of a record playerLinn

Why It Matters: The Linn Sondek LP12-50 is not only a love letter to the Scottish hi-fi company’s iconic Sondek LP12; it’s also the first piece of hardware that Jony Ive has worked on since leaving Apple.

The Big Picture: Special edition products are typically just toys for hardcore enthusiasts with money to burn, and in some respects, the Sondek LP12-50 is no different. The original Linn Sondek LP12 was a 1972 audiophile-grade turntable that was ahead of its time thanks to its modular design. Since nearly every component is upgradable and replaceable, these turntables have stood the test of time. The 2023-released Sondek LP12-50 shares much of the same DNA as its predecessor, but Linn recruited the help of LoveFrom, Jony Ive’s design firm, to give a few modern design improvements. For example, it has smoother and more rounded edges, redesigned metal hinges and a new circular power button. It’s a reimagining of one of the most iconic turntables by one of the most iconic product designers of all time.

Bing Chat

bing screenBing

Why It Matters: Bing Chat, aka “The New Bing,” not only brings AI to the masses on a broader scale than ever, it also reinvigorates Googleโ€™s only major competition.

The Big Picture: Since its launch in 2009, Bing has spent most of its life as a punchline, playing obvious second fiddle to Google as Microsoftโ€™s product-placement blitz put it in the mouths of countless TV show characters during the 2010s. But by leaning hard into AI and creating the new “Bing Chat” around the latest and greatest tech from OpenAI, the GPT-4 language model and DALL-E image generator, Bing is taking the notion of “search” in a bold new direction. The result is giving average Joes easy access to ever-more advanced AI tools and presenting an actual, meaningful alternative to the ever-more-totalizing Google.
