The Apollo 13 mission may not exactly have been NASA’s most successful mission, but it made for a great movie (Bill Paxton, for better or worse). Two missions prior though, Apollo 11 made history when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked the surface of the moon with oft forgotten command module pilot Michael Collins. If you’re unfamiliar with Omega’s “Moonwatch” story, when an electronic timing system malfunctioned on Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong strapped his Omega Speedmaster Professional to his space suit to keep track of time.

In honor of the 40th Anniversary, Omega will issue an Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 edition. One of its key features is the second subdial with rhodium-plated hand designed to match the Apollo 11 mission patch (originally designed by Michael Collins): an eagle descending onto the lunar surface with an olive branch in its claws and the Earth visible in the distance.

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Edition GMT keeps many of the Omega Chronograph Moonwatch technical features including 42mm size, shatterproof hesalite crystal, black tachymeter bezel, and Lemania hand-wound movement. Oh yeah, its also the “the only watch to be worn on the moon”. 7,969 pieces will be made.

Cost: $3,700

Also See: From The Earth To The Moon miniseries.
