Question: What’s Your Favorite Beer?
Win Beer Mugs From Crate & Barrel
It’s Monday morning and we’ve already got beer on our minds. Actually, its always on our minds. We figure, with the weekend having just passed, you probably remember (or not) what beer you partook in.
Drop us a comment with your favorite, go-to, or latest discovery brew. Leave us a link if you can (we like to check out your recommendations). GP Crew, this means you too…
Oh, and as much as we’d like to, we can’t give beer out as a prize. At least that’s what the people who advise us on such things tell us. Fear not. A random recommendation will win a pair of Stratton Beer Mugs from Crate & Barrel ($10 each). Gear Patrol picked up a couple sets a few weeks back and we’re still, um, drinking from reviewing the other set.

Fav Beer = Honeymoon
As THE HUSBAND says….”Mmmm…Beer”
I don’t know which one is his favorite, but I often have to clean up his empties of Killian’s Red.
Not just my favorite, but the best beer is…………
SHINER BOCK =otherwise known as= TEXAS TABLE WINE
but Abita Strawberry brew takes a strong second place.
Rob,
Glad to find someone else who knows of these fine Texas and Louisiana breweries. Good choices!
I spent last weekend working on some Chimay Blue http://www.chimay.com/en/chimay_blue_220.php that a friend gave me in return for helping her move. (BTW Rena, I need my ladder back now that I am sober).
She know me well , I love my trappists. However I dare not drink from my Nuremberg clay steins since my wife thinks those are for decoration and for that reason I am desperatly in need of some mugs.
I love Stella Artois and almost any Weizen.
Anderson Valley Brewing Co - Boont Amber Ale
Probably the most delightful beer I have ever had the good fortune to consume.
http://www.avbc.com/beers/boont-amber-ale/
Boddington’s Pub Ale is my absolute favorite. If guiness were chocolate boddington’s would be caramel. Silky smooth caramel.
A lot of places don’t have Boddington’s though so my 2nd choice falls to Blue Moon.
It’s not a mug, but the New Belgium globe glass is a nice one:
Tulip shape & laser etched logo in the bottom (to help release carbonation).
Oh, as for my favorite beer. Currently really enjoying Great Divide’s Espresso Oak Aged Yeti (imperial stout). My favorite seasonals: Great Lakes Brewery Christmas Ale, New Belgium’s Skinny Dip. Dogfish Head’s 120minute IPA is probably my favorite overall.
Just had my first G. Schneider & Sohn Aventinus wheat dopplebock a few weeks back. This was an amazingly delicious dopplebock with a really low alcohol profile. Now gimme those mugs!
Heaven in a bottle…it’s got quite a bit going on, not to mention the aroma of banana bread. Good call Scott.
It really is. I have only had a few dopplebocks, but they never fail to impress. I would love to try another G. Schneider & Sohn brew! Glad to find someone who shared my favorite!
Guinness
But some runners up are: Red Hook Sunrye, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Peak Organic (which cannot be found in my current geographic local)
Here’s the link to Peak Organic for anyone interested http://www.peakbrewing.com/
Without a doubt the Kona Brewing Company’s Longboard Lager and/or Fire Rock Pale Ale.
There are a few beers that are drank in Jamaica. Guinness, Heineken, and Red Stripe. I drink them all.
Last weekend I did go with this though.
http://www.gooseisland.com/pages/oatmeal_stout/20.php
I know you haven’t heard of it, but definitely Magic Hat.
Especially their Thumbsucker variety.
http://www.magichat.net
Why would you think no one has ever heard of Magic Hat? They sell it at the grocery store. its not that rare.
Favorite beer = Flying Dog Double Dog Double Pale Ale.
My favorite beer is Young’s Double Chocolate Stout.
Go-to is Guinness or Iron City (I’m a pittsburgh guy)
and I found a vanilla stout at a beer festival last fall and for the life of me cannot remember the name, but it was probably the best beer i’ve ever had.
Try the Rogue Chocolate Stout for desert.
I’ll have to give that a shot. I love a good dark beer.
Flying Fish… mmm, I get thirsty just thinking about it.
I love Würzburger Hofbrau, from my days in Germany. For West Coast suggestions, Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale or anything form Liberty Brewing will not disappoint. On the cheap, I’m loving Michelob’s Dunkel Weisse which is quite good and sporting a $15 per case rebate through the end of April. Outstanding!
Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA.
I’m a little farklempt just thinking about it.
I think it’s too tough for me to pick just one. I always enjoy a Blue Moon (and it’s seasonal variety). I also enjoy a good ol’ Shiner Bock (and it’s varieties as well) - brewed in the great state of Texas - http://www.shiner.com/
Its a close tie between N’ICE CHOUFFE ( http://www.achouffe.be/en/nos-bieres/nos-produits/ ) and St. Bernardus Abt 12 ( http://www.sintbernardus.be/en/beers.html ). Both of which are best on draft when partaking with friends at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, GA ( http://www.brickstorepub.com/ ).
Robert, I would agree and say that pretty much anything from St. Bernardus freaking brings it. I’m considering becoming a monk for that very reason.
Although Guinness is my default. It’s still a great beer. It’s hard to pick my favorite, but here is a good list.
Dogfish 90 minute IPA
Stone Arrogant Bastard and Ruination
Ommegang Abbey Ale
Most Great Lakes Brewing Co. Beers.
Genesee Cream Ale
New Castle or Leinenkeugal Sunset Wheat!
Now you’ve done it….asked a man from Portland to call out his favorite hop-infused libation, which changes nearly weekly.
However, since you asked this week, I’d have to say Laurelwood’s Free Range Red has been making it’s way through my liver with splendid frequency.
Though, for comfort-beer, I’d probably head down to McMenamins and grab a pitcher of Hammerhead.
(…Dusty, good call on Dead Guy Ale as well.)
Oh man, Portland…land of plentiful beers. Deschutes Mirror Pond was a daily treat my last trip out there.
Maharaja Imperial IPA by Avery for you hop-fiends.
http://www.averybrewing.com/BigBeers/seasonal/TheMaharaja
Surly - Great beer from a small, but quickly growing brewery in Minneapolis Minnesota, their “Darkness” Halloween release (a Russian Imperial Stout) sells out each year when it goes on sale in extremely limited quantities at the brewery only. Bottles of the stuff have fetched $300+ on ebay.
My favorite brew is coffee bender which “refreshes like an iced-coffee, is aromatic as a bag of whole beans as satisfies like your favorite beer. Utilizing the latest technology, the Surly brew team has developed a cold extraction process that results in intense coffee aromatics and flavor.”
Check it out http://www.surlybrewing.com/index.php
1. Shiner Bock as above, has to be one of the best beers of all time, for any occasion
2. Which would be what I get when I am out of Texas, would have to be “Fat Tire” http://www.newbelgium.com/lpa
Dale’s Pale Ale from Oskar Blues in CO is one of my standbys. A great, no nonsense beer. I’m also really into their Gordon IPA. And it comes in a can - travels well!
http://www.oskarblues.com
Newcastle
it’s tough to pick just a single beer. but if there’s one beer i can’t live without, it’s definitley Stone IPA. anything from Stone is terrific, the IPA is phenomenal!
also, the Avery Maharaja mentioned a couple times is delicious!
if you like really hoppy beers, try Bell’s Hopslam. it’s insane amounts of hoppy! i know it was available a few weeks ago around here, but i’m not sure if it’s currently available.
Surly Furious.
Dogfish Head’s Raison D’Etre - brewed with beet sugar and green raisins, nothing tastes quite like it
Beer Lao. Try travelling outside the continental US once in a while.
Steinlager Pure.
Could Willem Dafoe and Harvey Keitel both be wrong?
Dark Star Porter from the Bluegrass Brewing Co.
ooo love the mugs from Crate & Barrel!!
Fav Beer = Magic Hat or Sam Adams Summer Ale
Sunshine Wheat by New Belgium Brewing CO.
or
Laughing Lab by Bristol Brewing CO
or
Stella Artois by … I dunno
or
Shock Top by Anheuser
or
Widmer Hefeweizen by Widmer Brothers
… should I go on…
Currently, my favorite nectar from heaven that is drawn from the crystal springs of love and harmony and gently kissed with a hint of hops and called Yazoo Pale Ale…
Dogfish Head 120 = 2 beer queer
Definitely Corona. I don’t care how much you think it’s a poser/girly/unmanly drink. There’s nothing better than an ice cold Corona on a hot summer day. Nothing. And you know it.
uhhh. PBR fools.
I know it’s not that eloquent…but it’s the kind of beer you saw your grandfathers drink and was probably the one that you first tasted.
I may not have good taste, but I know what tastes good.
SVANDYKE - PBR cannot be underestimated. Particularly the charm of the 16oz six pack cans. Value and deliciousness.
Asahi Super Dry happens to be my favorite.
I’ll take a pint of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout any day of the week.
Alagash White, Sam Adams (Summer, Oktoberfest & Winter Brews), Blue Moon and Guiness.
Hacker Pschorr is the nectar of the gods. The wheat version is money.
Like others it’s impossible to pick one.
Dogfish Head 60 Minute will never cease to be a favorite.
Andersen Valley Poleeko Gold Pale Ale whenever I can find it, and since I toured the brewery last year, San Francisco’s Anchor Steam is always a welcome treat, especially on draft.
Mammoth Brewing Company Double Nut Brown and IPA 395….
For anyone in Oz, or anyone who can get the goods from Oz, you gotta try Coopers or Little Creatures. If you like it cloudy and strong and you don’t wanna drop too much coin, these are tops.
Having tasted numerous brews in my domestic and international travels. I have come to realize I will never have a favorite beer. It limits what you’re willing to try when you walk into a pub that has your “favorite”. I say keep a type that suites your taste and try as many as you can. Right now I’m working on Ales.
Hitachino Red Rice Ale
http://www.kodawari.cc/engpage/kodawari/html/hitachino.htm
My favorite by far is Allentown Brew Works’ “Fegley’s Amber Lager”.
http://www.thebrewworks.com/allentown-brewworks/brews/
But my go to will still be Sam Adam’s Boston Lager.
Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale
Estes Park Porter
Personally, I think there’s nothing quite like the taste of a fine abbey-style Belgian beer, whether it be Chimay, Affligem, Corsendonk, what have you. I’ll even go with a little La Fin Du Monde every now and again. I love to sit down on a Saturday with a bottle of a Belgian brew, add to that a baguette, some cornichons, a little coppa, and some fine cheese, maybe some Tomme Crayeuse or St Nectaire, and you have my personal heaven.
Amen to the imbibers flowing from Belgian abbeys.
Stella Artois definitely tops my list!
I love Left Hand Milk Stout. http://www.lefthandbrewing.com/
St. Pauli Girl. Bad name, great beer.
Best Beer EVER -
Brooklyn Brewery - Local 1
Kona Beer from Hawaii
Specifically their Pipeline Porter made with real Kona coffee.
Unfortunately it is hard to find, seasonal and only available from September to March, but I assure you the quest is well worth it.
http://www.konabrewingco.com/
At the moment, Smithwicks.
Blue Moon is my favorite right now, but when I can get ahold of it…Fat Tire
Sam Adam’s Boston Lager.
Bell’s beer from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Many seasonal and year round brews. Unfiltered, flavorful, REAL beer. Bells Oberon Ale is just now in season, and is one of the best Summer beers around. Crisp with spicy and light citrus notes, it it killer on a hot day. For the true beer enthusiast i recommend Bells Expedition Stout. Black with a dark brown head, it is my absolute favorite. 11.5% alcohol by volume, its not for the faint of heart, but it is a perfect cold weather beer. In Michigan, we are no stranger to snow and we’ve killed more than a few sixers of Expedition around the fire in the backyard.. Highly recommended. Not sure if Bells is available all over the U.S. but i know it’s in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Florida.
http://www.bellsbeer.com has a pretty nice list and description of all the brews and thier dates of availability.
I used to live near a ridiculously well-stocked package store, and therefore had a constant supply of new micro-brews to sample, but that was a while ago. So, my choice is going to be pretty mainstream, but…
Harp. A thousand times Harp.
Fat Tire. Psyched it has arrived in NC!
Fat Tire. Psyched it has arrived in NC!
Weihenstephaner Dunkel Weisse.. mmmm, so delicious!!!
I can also go for Franziskaner Hefe-Weizen!! And don't forget the bratwurst!! yum!!
Delirium Nocturnum - pretty awesome stuff from Belgium. And it's got a pink elephant on the bottle. Seriously, try to beat that.
Mmmmm…The St Bernardus Dubbel, Pater 6. Yum.
I've gotta say…Abbaye de Leffe Blonde is my all-time favorite. Part of my praise is rooted in raw sentimentality, as I nearly survived on the stuff during my semester abroad. But I assure you it can stand firm on its own merits without all my driveling!
Deep golden and perfectly balanced, light-bodied, but surprisingly flavorful. Refreshing on hot sidewalk afternoons, comforting and smooth on cool evenings. No fruity aftertaste or lingering tongue-texture makes it the perfect accompaniment with all kinds of food.
1. FAT TIRE……..crisp, refreshing with a hint of chocolate and nice robust flavors on the palate.
2. Guiness
3. Arogant Bastard
4. Boddingtons
5. New Castle
6. Negra Modelo
7. Stouts and Ipas
oh, almost forgot……Bud Light, NOT!!!!!! lol
Leffe Blonde, Hoegaarden, Omegang Wit… everyone sees where I am going with this. Out of left field Schiltz for pure nostalgia factor.
Stan, well said as I am a lover of the wheat as well as the Schlitz. Was in Milwaukee last weekend so I spied it everywhere. That town loves its beer!
mirror pond pale ale…Dechutes brewery. Bend Oregon
I dig the fact that this post is still getting comments. It must be a testament to the enduring power of beer and the human spirit. I had New Belgium's summer seasonal Skinny Dip the other day and was quite pleased. They know how to bring it.
Blue Moon in a frosty white mug with a slice of orange half squeezed then dropped into the nectar. A real surprise from the Coors brewing Company….say what? Yes, and absolutely delicious with a sandwich that has melted cheese in it. Mmmmm
Also< just discovered an IPA called Sunflower from Portland Oregon. It has a nice spicy hoppy finish that is incredible with hot wings!! Thanks you guys- your posts have filled my shopping list and drained my bank account. Sweeet damnation!!!!
What time can I get out of the office today??
Ommegang Abbey Ale, Pyramid Apricot Ale, Spaten Optimator Doppelbock, Anchor Porter, and Bintang Pilsener (Indonesia)
Right now . . . Rickards White and Innis & Gunn
Need to find somewhere that carried Stone here. Damn gov't run Canadian liquor stores.
CHIMAY RED, A belgian trappist ale…………..the middle of the 3 they offer and the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
So how do you do this when your writing job keeps you tied to your desk? ,
