The Essential Style of Summer 2017

Bermuda is a 90-minute direct flight from NYC. The island’s 21 square miles are covered in sandy coves bordering clear blue waters. There are rolling hills dotted with pastel houses, and the island basks in a subtropical climate that rarely dips below 60 degrees (winters can get chilly — so be forewarned). It’s a warm-weather playground for people who love to boat and swim, with plenty of European influence for those with a more “cosmopolitan” idea of relaxation (yachts, not kayaks). When packing for a trip to Bermuda — or any other summery destination — keep your outfits simple. Summer style excels when you pare down outfits to their essentials. As always, focus on quality garment construction, but in the absence of layering, aim to incorporate more colors, patterns or textures into your wardrobe. A minimal wardrobe doesn’t need to be plain; just keep it straightforward.

Daily Wear

Reefs are a mixed bag — they’re safeguards (ocean swells, invaders) and they’re scary as hell (cuts, marooning). Speeding over a reef on a Waverunner in translucent, cerulean water at 58 mph is another mixed bag — thrilling and gut-buckling. We ventured out with H2O Sports for a quick lap of Somerset, and then followed up the adrenaline rush with a fish sando at the famed Woody’s. These cool and collected looks belie the adrenaline pumping through our veins — as style is always a mixed bag, too: repress any spikes in emotion, always keep the look cool. – Matthew Ankeny

One can choose to enjoy the crystal clear waters of Bermuda by land or by boat. For the former, head to Admiralty House Park in Pembroke Parish which provides some of the best cliff jumping on the island. Cliffs range in height — you’ll either have a comfortable jump or a terrifying plunge — and the calm water is ideal for a slow swim. For the latter, charter a boat — we took out Lady Whit, captained by Vincent Trott — to Paradise Lake in Warwick Parish, a secluded area 15 minutes from Hamilton perfect for cutting the engines and floating the afternoon away. – John Zientek

Formal Evening

There’s no need to dress formal in Bermuda — when the traditional attire of the island is a pair of shorts with a blazer and high socks, you’re in the clear to dress as you like. But, there are times a proper occasion deserves proper attire. Seersucker allows you a dose of texture while still retaining breathability, and a tuxedo will set you apart from the rest of the crowd. Haspel — the self-proclaimed “originator” of the seersucker suit — offers this seersucker tux, which pairs nicely with a linen shirt and oxfords sans socks. – MA

After a day in the water, relax on Pink Beach’s West Beach, a secluded stretch of sand accessible to guests of The Loren Hotel. As the sun sets and temperatures settle, keep your attire relaxed. Shorts and faded sweatshirts, leather slippers and shearling boots — comfortable beach attire fit for lounging while the bartender makes your next Rum Swizzle. – JZ
