The Patek Philippe 5968A
Baselworld 2018: Patek’s Groovy New Aquanaut Gets a Chronograph for the First Time

Verdict: Patek is known for its precious metal dress watches and high-complication watches, but the brand does have something of a sporty side with its Nautilus and Aquanaut lines. The 5968A we see here is the latter, and for the first time, the brand is giving the watch a chronograph movement. This being Patek, though, it’s no ordinary chronograph. In addition to the sublime finishing, it features a column wheel (for smooth engagement) as well as a “virtually friction-free” vertical disc clutch.
The black, etched-out dial is accented by a pair of orange chronograph second and minute hands, and the watch comes with both black and orange straps. It’s almost ’70s-inspired, a total departure from the brand’s generally classical aesthetic. Groovy.
Who It’s For: Given that, this seems to be an instance of Patek trying to reach a newer, younger audience (albeit one populated by individuals who can drop $40,000 on a watch like it’s no big deal). Basically, if you want something like an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Vacheron Constantin Overseas, this is something to consider.
