The Bulova Oceanographer 666 "Devil Diver"

Baselworld 2018: Bulova’s New Dive Watch Is Exactly What Enthusiasts Have Been Asking For

Baselworld, the biggest watch event of the year, is happening now at the Messe Basel in Basel, Switzerland. We’ve got a team on the ground, there to bring you the most exciting releases. Follow our coverage here, and also be sure to check out Instagram. We’ll be posting to our feed throughout the week.

Verdict: Late last year, Bulova and the vintage dealer Analog/Shift had watch enthusiasts vote on what vintage watch Bulova should bring back. Given the choice between the Bulova Bullhead Chronograph, the Chronograph A and the Oceanographer 666 “Devil Diver,” watch nerds overwhelmingly chose the dive watch. Analog/Shift unveiled a limited edition reissue of that watch, but at Baselworld 2018 we finally got a look at the final, non-limited version.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: While the industry seems to be on a downsizing bent this year, and while the original Devil Diver and the limited edition had a case around 40mm in diameter, the commercial version will be 44mm. And that’s fine. On the wrist, the cushion case wears small and comfortably.

There are other aspects of the watch that make it authentic to the original, including a light, jangly bracelet and a spot-on reinterpretation of the original dial (including a retro applied logo). The watch also rocks an automatic mechanical movement from Miyota, though Bulova did not specify which caliber, exactly. Most notably, though, Bulova opted for a red-and-navy colorway in place of the limited edition’s orange face.

Who It’s For: The watch enthusiasts who voted for it in the first place. Thinking more broadly, though, this is a fantastic dive watch option under $1,000, and will certainly work for anyone looking for a summer beater or just loves vintage watches or divers.
