According to Automotive News, EuropeVolkswagen’s new Mk8 generation Golf will debut in October 2019. VW will begin production by the end of the third quarter of 2019, and the Golf will reportedly go on sale in Germany by February 2020 before spreading to Europe and other markets.

The initial plan was to reveal the new Golf in September at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. Moving the Golf launch back allows VW to focus on the debut of the electric ID hatchback (not coming to the U.S. unfortunately). It also permits extra time to resolve technical glitches as VW prepares the Golf to be the promised “benchmark in safety and connectivity.”

Volkswagen will incorporate a myriad of new high-tech features into the new Golf, from smartphone entry to the ability to communicate with other cars and smart transportation infrastructure. It will have a “fully digital cockpit” as well. Implementing new, complicated software requires a lot of code debugging.

This will be a vital launch for Volkswagen. The versatile and fun-to-drive Golf has defined Volkswagen’s brand since its 1974 debut, however base Golf popularity has declined quite a bit in the U.S — sales dropped 51 percent to fewer than 7,000 vehicles last year. More than twice as many buyers opted for the performance-oriented GTI or the more spacious Golf Sportwagen. But, the Golf remains the best-selling car in Europe by a substantial margin — VW sold more than 445,000 of them there in 2018.
