Project Scarlett Is on the horizon

Microsoft’s New Powerhouse Xbox Is Coming Next Year

June 10, 2019 Tech By

This week at E3, the biggest event of the year for fans of gaming (from console to PC and beyond), and a whole host of cool new things were announced, including a slew of new games like Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Borderlands 3 and Gears 5; and maybe most importantly, Microsoft spilled the beans on the next Xbox coming in 2020.

The successor to the Xbox One X is being dubbed “Project Scarlett” for now (and ultimately destined to change), and it promises a ton of computing power under the hood. While other projects, like Google’s Stadia, plan to rely on streaming games from a remote source, Project Scarlett will have a custom designed AMD graphics chip, an SSD for speedy load times and a raft of high-speed GDDR6 memory that Microsoft says will make it capable of 8K resolution at 120 frames per second, if your TV can keep up anyway. That’s four times more powerful than the Xbox One X, which is already the most powerful gaming console. As far as which games you’ll be able to play on the new console, Halo fans get excited: the mysterious Halo Infinite will launch with Project Scarlett.

If 2020 seems like a lightyear away, you should know that you can save big right now on the on an Xbox One X on Amazon. You can get the console bunded with Fallout 76 for $374, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for $367, or with Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 for is $399. All those bundles are discounted from their normal $500.

As Microsoft teases its next piece of burly in-home hardware, the company has had little to say about game streaming this year, despite having announced an ambitious streaming project called xCloud in late 2018. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s chief adversary Sony has opted out of E3 this year, but already let slip similar details about its upcoming PlayStation 5 (expected 2020 as well) a few months earlier. By the time 2020 rolls around, there should be plenty to get excited about.
