GM-5600

The Iconic G-Shock Look Has Never Been So Affordable in Steel

July 28, 2019 Watches By

G-Shock might be best-known for its durable “resin” watches, but the growing selection of G-Shocks using steel cases has been well received. Outside the brand’s higher-end MR-G and MT-G models, the G-Steel series introduced more affordable options, and later the “Full Metal” series clad the iconic square-shaped G-Shock in steel. The new GM-5600 watches are the most affordable way yet to have the classic G-Shock 5600 look in steel at around half the price of the Full Metal series.

The squarish 5600 is the modern incarnation of the iconic original G-Shock that debuted in 1983. The new GM-5600 retains the resin (read: plastic) case but gives it a steel “bezel cover” — which can only make it tougher, one supposes, but it seems primarily a cosmetic update. With a cool vertically brushed top, the result looks a lot like the steel-cased GMW-B5000 on a strap.

In three versions, all with negative LCD displays, these retain the familiar G-Shock tech and durability features, though these initial versions unfortunately don’t offer the brand’s Tough Solar technology. The new models will start at a price of $200 for the bare steel, with those featuring a “black ion plating” commanding a slight premium at $220.
