This Stunning Land Rover Defender Is the Ultimate Custom Beach Cruiser
On Monday, United Kingdom-based Land Rover Defender restoration firm Arkonik released their latest custom build, the SoCal D90. As that name might lead you to think, it is essentially the ultimate beach cruiser.
Arkonik used a 1989 Defender 90 (the shorter-wheelbase three-door version) as the base for this build. The engine is the original Land Rover 3.5-liter V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Arkonik finished the SoCal D90 in Java Black paint, with tan Camden Supersoft woven leather seats inside. In spite of its tidy proportions, it can accommodate up to six passengers thanks to inward-facing tip-up seats.
While Arkonik’s builds hew to the original as much as possible, the SoCal D90 does not lack modern tech. It has a rearview camera, a USB port with Apple CarPlay and a Defender Defender GPS security system.
Arkonik produces custom Defender builds for import to the U.S. and Canada. A build for a D90 starts at $120,000, but Arkonik estimates that recreating the SoCal D90 build would cost around $170,000. Ancillary costs for shipping and import are little over $10,000, depending on the state. The build process takes about 16-18 months. In other words — if you want one anytime in the near future, put your order in sooner rather than later.
