Hope you brought a helmet, because Aston Martin has unveiled the V12 Speedster. It’s a limited-run, hand-built sports car produced by Q by Aston Martin, the company’s bespoke customization service. Just 88 will be produced, each promising a visceral, throwback driving experience — which it will deliver in two ways.

The first — and most obvious — is the fully-open cockpit with no windshield that the preview drawing told us about. This move follows follow a recent super-high-end sports car trend followed by Ferrari and McLaren of late. It should deliver some of the feel of a vintage race car without all the danger. That said, you probably want to go with a helmet to avoid looking like Jeremy Clarkson driving an Ariel Atom. (Your angry sex panther Vantage may be the better car for a first date.)

The second way will be the engine: a sonorous, not-often-seen-anymore V12. The turbocharged 5.2-liter powerplant, also used in the DBS, will put out 700 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. That will propel the car to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds and to a governed top speed of 186 mph. Again, you will experience all of that happening directly into your face.

There’s a lot afoot for Aston Martin in 2020; there’s the DBX SUV and Vantage Roadster arriving in the spring, the Valkyrie hybrid hypercar coming shortly after that, and the launch fo a rebranded F1 team. But the V12 Speedster will definitely be one of the coolest things on the horizon…at least for the 88 people who can grab one.

Pricing for the V12 Speedster will start at $950,000, which is enough money to buy all three current Lamborghini models. Aston Martin says that global deliveries will begin sometime in the first quarter of 2021.
