This May Be the Ultimate Retro Boombox for Physical Media-Obsessed Audiophiles

The styling it thoroughly vintage, but this old-school portable audio player has some modern tricks up its sleeve.

Over the last few years, there’s been a pretty serious resurgence of physical media in the audio space. It’s likely no surprise to most that vinyl kind of helped spearhead this revival, but even CDs and cassette tapes have (at least somewhat) risen back to prominence.

That said, it can be tough to find modern devices capable of playing these obsolete forms of tech, least of all ones that really capture the spirit of the physical media golden age of the ’70s to the ’90s.

In an interesting team-up, two Japanese outfits — one, an audio electronics brand and the other a musical group (famous for anime DanDaDan’s end credits sequence) — have a solution brewing. The Orion x Zutomayo SCR-B9(Z) Boombox might be the ultimate retro stereo for physical media audiophiles.

A vintage-style boombox with a cream-colored body and blue accents. It features two large round speakers on each side, a cassette tape deck on the right, a CD player on the left, and various buttons, knobs, and sliders in the center. The top section has a radio tuner display with frequency markings. The design includes branding such as "ORION," "ZUTOMAYO," and "ZTSOUNDS." The cassette tape compartment has a small illustration of a character hanging from the tape reels.
There’s no denying that this throwback blaster looks the part.

Master blaster

As its name suggests, this boombox is a modern revival of Orion’s legendary SCR-B9 “radical cassette” models from the ’70s and ’80s. While not an exact replica of those models, it does have much in common.

For instance, it has an integrated AM FM radio tuner, cassette player and a ton of other bells and whistles. It also has an integrated CD player, should you prefer discs over cassettes (or simply to utilize both).

The boombox has analog VU meters, a radio frequency dial for FM and AM bands, and a large speaker grille on the right side.
This boombox can play multiple forms of vintage physical media, include cassette tapes.

It has quality of life features to protect your media and listening experience, like an automatic stop in the tape deck — so it won’t put undue stress on your tapes when you reach the end (it also works for rewinding and fast-forwarding). Furthermore, the CD player has a 60-second anti-shock memory function, so your CD won’t skip when it gets jostled.

Even the radio is modernized. While tuning it is analog — you have to twist the knob to find the station — the actual mechanisms inside are fully digital, making the reception more crisp and crystal clear than is traditional.

The boombox is cream-colored with teal knobs and buttons, featuring a large speaker on the left, a digital display showing "PAIr," and various sliders and buttons for audio control. The cassette door has text including "ORION / ZUTOMAYO" and "ZTSOUNDS 75." The design combines retro elements with modern touches like Bluetooth connectivity.
Along with tapes, CDs and radio, this blaster can also play MP3s and has Bluetooth compatibility.

More than meets the eye

Crucially, this boombox is not solely a physical media player. That might seem obvious, as there’s an integrated radio tuner, but that’s not quite what I mean.

Along with the aforementioned traditional media compatibilities, this boombox is also compatible with MP3s (on flash drive or microSD cards) and has Bluetooth integration. That means, while you could go to town burning a bunch of CDs and recording tapes, you don’t have to.

You could just sync your smartphone to this boombox and use it like a portable speaker set. Also, when I say portable, I mean portable: the boombox can run on dry cell batteries (like Duracell, et al.) if you want to take it on the go.

The top panel features text, logos, and two blue control knobs labeled "TREBLE" and "BASS." The text includes "ORION | ZUTOMAYO" and a poetic passage. The design has a retro aesthetic with modern graphic elements.

That versatility is crucial in this day and age, if only for the limitations and rarity of physical forms of media. However, if you do have some spare tapes, you can record directly to them via this boombox, increasing your ability to make mix tapes. It can even record directly to flash and microSD.

One last thing: For those that really like to get into the tech weeds, the boombox boasts a pair of 13.5cm full-range, 2-way back bass reflex speakers and 3cm tweeters. It also has a 3.5mm input jack, AUX input jack, two 6.3mm Standard Mono microphone inputs (for karaoke) and more.

A vintage-style boombox with detailed handwritten labels pointing to various features. It has large round speakers on each side, a CD lid on the left, a cassette holder in the center, and multiple control knobs and buttons in turquoise. Labels indicate components such as "Treble Control Knob," "Frequency Display," "Output Level Meter (L/R)," "Tuning Knob," "Volume Knob," "Tweeter Speaker," "Full-range Speaker," and a "CD / USB / microSD / BT Control Panel." The dimensions 670mm width, 180mm depth, and 275mm height are noted. The brand names "ZUTOMAYO" and "ORION" are displayed in the top right corner.
No detail has gone overlooked.
